Insulting ‘Friends’!

The Hypocrisies and the Double Standards of Men!

…. I learned to my sorrow that the human race

Is teaming with scoundrels, each with a double face

Therefore, until they perish and meet their end

Only then one dares to call a person a friend.-

In Search of A Friend – Poem by Mustafa Mohamed Said (PDO)

A long time ago when I was working with ‘one state of the art prestigious project’ firm – I was going to conduct a preliminary first short list interview of candidates for one Administration position – when in my Office walked two guys – one was the Interviewee – and the other was ‘his friend’! The friend had told the Interviewee that he knew me personally and well – and if he would be allowed to talk to me first – because ‘he wanted to use the great ‘W’ thing with me! So if he could be allowed to talk to me in private first before the Interview?

I found this man’s behaviour very strange, crude, odd and weird – but I went on to entertain him anyhow – though we were already behind schedule in the Interviews Programmes! That is M for you – entertaining and bending backwards to accommodate! Anyway, what else is new? The weirdest part was his telling his friend that he knew me well – which was far from the truth! I never knew the guy – and had never ever met him in my life before!

The world is full of crazy weird people of all kinds and sorts! Because after the poor man had left the office – the ‘good friend’ asked me if he could close the door – which I have this bad habit of always ‘keeping it open’! So I obliged! The next was my shock to my every atom and foundation! He was crooked enough to ask if the position involved dealing with customers – and handling money! It was none of his business anyway – but this soft softie approach of mine in dealing with such insurgents had always put me in trouble before – but I never learn my lesson!

So I replied to the affirmative to both the questions. Then he shocked me to the core – do not recruit this guy! Yes – do not! He has been terminated due to some pending cases against him – so ‘I tell you to be careful! I was so shocked – because I did not know what to do next! Normally we have what in HR we call as a Reference Check – that is checking the person out – if we are really interested in him or her after being shortlisted.

Then he called his friend – he said in front of him! I told M all about you – which was true in semantics – and he will do something about your application – doubly semantic as also true! I had to go through the motions of the interview anyhow – but I was so confused and lost – because this was the first time such a thing had happened to me – and did not know what to do!

Meanwhile, his friend went about to others. As soon as I had finished the interview – in walks my boss who liked such things – telling me – give me his CV. To which he took it from me – and tore it up! He told me – this guy is out! He is not a reliable candidate! It later materialised the ‘good friend’ had been to him too – whilst I was conducting the interview!

Anyway, I had an opportunity far later in life when I met this Interviewee and asked him about his ‘friend’! He told me – Oh, he is a very good friend – actually my brother in reality! Then he told me how his ‘friend’ had helped him whilst ‘between jobs’ – and looking after his family! Eventually this man was cleared of the case – and was paid a handsome compensation for his false termination – and got a better job than the one we had planned for him! God’s mysterious ways of working out things – finally for the ‘trusting guy’!

Now those of you who know me well will tell me that something must have happened to you this week for you to write on the topic! You are not mistaken – again! Do you know about Facebook? Well, I sort of had this ‘friend’ lying with me idle in my lists for ages! As a Writer and Columnist I get many requests to be a ‘friend’ – and I do not have the heart to say ‘another time’ or to decline. I feel bad to hurt someone’s feelings – especially if he or she is a fan! Or just likes occasionally to read my articles!

My late father one day beat me up very badly – because unknown to me I was followed to the Masjid by a puppy I was playing with before – and yet I was joining the congregation prayers! With due respects to ‘dogs lovers’ – because the animal is considered sort of unclean’ – I did not make the rules – just following them! The point I want to make here is – if you play with a puppy it will follow you to the mosque. Rhetoric in meaning! For a dog – it is just a building!

So this one guy – the name sounds local though – writes something best put as idiotic – and foolishly I put in my comments. It is supposed to be a religious topic – so you must expect comments from others – if you have the nerve and guts in the first place to put it in!

This is what I always say about the increasing extremism, fundamentalism and radicalism in some quarters – especially by some of the Youth – and how they are not able to handle it – when opinions and views come in that are different from theirs! That is why we have so many issues, problems and troubles now!

My double shocks next when he abrasively replies – in a public forum like Facebook – using the N word to describe me ‘to shut up’! I feel like giving him a good piece of my mind – but then I take the high road – and just say – I feel sorry for you – Bye! I then remove him from my friends in Facebook – and in my lists. No longer a Friend! Better now before it is too late!

What I find strange and weird is using the ‘N’ word to describe me – though he misspelled it – with my first inclination for him to go back to school to learn English before replying to others!

Yes I was born in Zanzibar – and I tell you that am very proud of it – the fact – too! If it makes you happy to name call – go ahead – it is your funeral – not mine!

That is my story! Take Care!

Between Us Only!

Are You Afraid?

Or The (African) Island Touch!

Do you believe in these paranormal ghost things? These things were common occurrences in this place!

The Island - When I was a young boy in this island I grew up in East Africa (Mafia – not the Italian one) but the Arabic one for the place (island) without (She without) – also known locally as Chole – there were a lot of scare and weird stories there. These are not tales that I was told, but had actually experienced myself, family and or by my close friends! See Mafia Island Images Below!

I - So Shocked

So Afraid?

For example? Like cars cutting off engines whenever they reached one special baobab tree, especially after evening prayers (Maghrib) and for no reason. It never happened when our late father (pbuh) was there! In one incident when it happened, my late father shot in the air – and the truck mysteriously restarted!

See Fear Images Below

Afraid 1 Afraid 2 Afraid 3 Afraid 4 Afraid A Afraid B

There was this beautiful damsel wandering in the night (very tall fair Arab lady). They said she was a ‘Jinn’ (ghost, fairy) trying to trap gullible (and usually drunk) men. It was said she actually walks through walls. If that will not scare you to run (and forget all others ideas you had in your head) what else will? I never met her – but our houseboy did! We heard his screams late at night!

We used to mock these things that they used to make people collect cashew nuts whilst they thought they were dreaming it in their sleep – only to find it the hard way when their hands reeked of cashew fruit next morning!

Travel Express by Night – One old Bedouin (Omani) telling my father one day early morning ‘that our grandmother had died in Hail Al-Ghaaf (Quriyaat)’. In those days mails took a month, when the letter was received, it was the exact date (the man had insisted to my disbelieving late father to write down the date!).

It was said this man traveled at night (how – do not ask me! I never asked him, nor did I want to find out!) to and back to Oman. To prove his point, he had fresh ripening dates in his house (guess nobody ate them except himself, who else in his right mind would want to try?) It was always in summer time – I came only to know when I returned to Oman in 1972 was the time of dates!

There were so many stories In this island, of so many stories of people changing into ‘cats and monkeys’ and coming to people’s houses (we used to think our poor dad (pbuh) had lost it, when he used to shout at them in Arabic – to go away, and they actually did!).

There is also this one! How my late elder brother (pbuh) beat a cat badly because it ate his food. Next day he was seriously sick, everybody said he was a goner. They had to go to apologise to an old African man who looked like he was just beaten up! Only then my brother recovered.

The Haunted Hotel Room – The hotel Reception offered me this room on the top floor. It was at a reduced rate. The Reception Staff lady said to me – You are Omani. So you will be okay in the room! I refused to take chances – and rightly too – as it emerged that the room was haunted – and there was an evil presence in the room. Next morning the people found themselves on the floor thrown from the bed – in the bath tub – and hearing angry hissing voices – like get out from my master’s bed!

I would have discounted this as just whim. But I met someone later one I knew well who had tried the room – and met exactly the same fate. It seemed the hotel was housed in a large family house belonging to an ex Omani famous family. Some of the family members were massacred in the Revolution – and the rest had all left the place soon afterwards!

The Singing Pretty Damsel – There was a great disbelief – but one person was ready to swear on his mother’s grave – that he had a glimpse of her at the haunted house as dusk was setting! Only two brothers lived in the house. They were aloofers – and were marked as hermit misers! The man swore he had never seen such a beautiful woman before in his life – she had long hair – and was singing a Faiza Ahmed (Arabic) song! She was tall and very fair in complexion. When he looked into the window – she instantly disappeared – but he felt his whole body going into a chill! Then the fierce dog of the house barked loudly – and he just ran non-stop back to the village!

The People of the Night! – As kids we used to go out early in the morning before dawn to collect fresh fallen from the trees mangoes! In one place we heard as if someone was moving in the shrubs near us – moaning loudly! Next day we met this old local woman who kept staring at us! She was known as a Mchawi – Mwanga – or as you and I understand as a witch!

She lamented to us – You be careful in your fruit mango picking things – because you are disturbing some other people out doing their thing (job: business)! Lucky they know you – or they could have harmed you! Actually we did not really need to collect the mangoes – as they were always being sold to us the family very cheap! But boys will always be boys! We stopped the mangoes collecting exercises soon after this!

The Big Question – The big question I keep asking myself since a kid! How come the people practicing these are always still poor, destitute and in need? Or why don’t they help us fight our adversaries?

Hope I did not scare you in the process! Being scared and afraid is normal human trait and behaviour – nothing illogical, alien or strange either! Or illogical and inconclusive either!

ADDENDUM

The Very Tall (UFO) Person – Our farm boy was returning to the farm at Wayani late at night. Then he saw this very tall looking person, pulling chains tied to him! When asked if he was local or not – he said I did not stop to look! But the tall person was wearing the long white dress put for funeral purposes! The man was admitted in the hospital for acute shock! He was exclaiming loudly what he saw at the hospital ward. Two days later he had died! People just put it to him turning mad and senile – and seeing things! But was it really? True the man liked the local drink Uraka – made from fermented cashew fruits! But is it that all to make the person so scared … to death?

The Car Lift Gone All Wrong! It was coconut picking season time. So he was driving very late at night. He nearly hit the local woman who was standing on the road – after his car beams picked her out from the shadows! So he asked her – Mother – what are you doing late at night? Get in the car – I will take you to the village. She reluctantly got in! After awhile talking incessantly to her – but she was not answering – so he turned around! She was not in the car!

A few miles on – he saw her again by the side of the road! This time she was stopping him for a lift! Again she was standing in the middle of the road! He said to me – I drove through her. I thought I hit something – because I found the car shaking! He did not stop – or look back. He put loud the Quraan cassette – and reciting along! When he told the villagers – they did not disbelieve him! They mentioned one old woman who had died many years ago! The woman was famous for asking for lifts!

Between Us Only!

A Question of Loyalty!

  • O ye who believe! Obey Allah and Obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in resultQuraan 4.59
  • ·          Loyalty is the pledge of truth to oneself and others.- Ada Valez – Boardley
  • A Question of Loyalty is the fourteenth episode of the BBC comedy series Yes Minister and was first broadcast 6 April 1981

If you are faced in life of a dilemma situation where you may need to tell one the painful bitter truth  – and not doing so or in remaining quiet – in order for peace and just to continue to maintain friendships and relationships – which one would you go for?  It is a loaded question – or as it is being said – a one million question! You could retort by saying that it all depends on the style, tact and diplomacy that you may need to use – or as it is said in some quarters – of sugar coating the bitter pill – before you give it! But what if there are no takers? And all your best efforts and determination have failed miserably?

Images Loyalty – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Loyalty 1

And have you considered of the repercussions and consequences of showing indifference – when the person asks you pointblank – why? Why did you not tell me? Because you would not listen! Yes – but still you should have told me – you at least owe this to me! And in brief and in summary – that is my life’s story – by saying it – however bitter and painful the truth can be! For me that is the preferred option – rather than go with the tide – and remain quiet! Admittedly going with the tide can drown you! But did you notice too that it is only the ‘dead fish’ that go with the tide!

In my current life status – I have some ladies that write to me ‘complaining bitterly ‘ about their spouses and how they get treated. The discomfiting and the unfortunate part is that I know well their spouses – and that is what is being said of ‘hiding skeletons in the closets’ – or as the East Africans say – ‘each house hides its secrets inside the house – you cannot see it from outside’!

Loyalty 2

Apart from semantics of loyalty – what can I say to them? That perhaps it takes two to tango? As soon as you say that – or try to intimate that perhaps she had contributed to the situation – then all hell is let loose – and you are now involved in the triangular relationships – even if you were determined not to! The problem with some people is this ‘I’ thing – they are always right – and can never be wrong! I know of a very good friend of mine married for over 35 years – if he has made a mistake to his wife or children – he will come forward to admit it – even if belatedly!

Loyalty 3 Loyalty A

Images Loyalty – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

He tells me that in all this long period ‘not even one day did the wife come forward to admit anything she had done wrong – even inadvertently! How is it possible that you as a human being can remain like an angel that has done no wrong? But she will easily apologise to the office staff – or her friends – but never her husband! Yet the lady is supposed to be religious and observing but only in the other aspects – but not in equation is the husband there! The triple hypocrisy out of it all!

Loyalty Sincere I

As Loyal as Mother and Child! Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!

This week my two sequel books in the Between Us Only! series were released! In one of the book was an article about how I left one place! There is a new man there – under ‘New Management’ theme and focus! So I sent my book to him – pointing out the chapter for his attention! I did not expect much in return with exception of either being just ignored – as the usual cases – or even the book given to someone else – ‘if you are interested’ in his works! The surprise and excitement was all mine – when the good pragmatic man was so kind and receptive – and it even made me feel guilty of adding that chapter in the book!

In my career life I had one lady staff who was always calling in sick – and she in many times did not even bring medical proofs of being sick – but I used ‘to cover and protect her’ because I knew about her case well personally! The day I had resigned from the place – what else is new? – another boss came in! She was so excited- because their families knew each other well from old days!  The guy even teased me that ‘he was invited for lunch in her house – were you invited? I said emphatically – No! Lucky you! In God’s mysterious ways – the relationships soon soured – and she started losing salary money whenever she did not turn up – because the man followed the book rules! She was soon heard to lament – I am being punished by what I did to M1

In one of my Executive Search Selection campaigns – I got one Omani Engineer so desperate that he even had considered to apply for a job in a war torn Arab country! He feared that one day he will end as a casualty of indiscriminate road bombings! He was a good candidate – only his problem was his mouth – he spoke! I understood well the dilemma – being myself a victim! He ended in a very high profile job somewhere else – with full power and authority! Some years later they were looking for a temporary HR Consultant – guess who got the job? Not me for sure! That is how the cookie crumbles – as our good Brits say!

I could write chapters and chapter on this theme – but I am taking into mind what my Features Editor said to me about my columns – so I will end here!

ADDENDUM – His Majesty visit to PDO on 12th May 2013 and receiving this SMS message from the MD brought tears to my eyes! You will excuse me for now getting old and being a diabetic case! The SMS just said – This afternoon we were privileged and honoured to be visited at our MAF offices by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said. I and members of the MDC presented PDO business priorities and key achievements. His Majesty sent his best wishes to all employees and was appreciative of PDO efforts in oil and gas production and our wider programme to support Oman. PDO MD

  • Be yourself, everyone else is taken! – Oscar Wilde
  • If you do not tell the truth about yourself; you cannot tell it about other people! – Virginia Woolf
  • Say what is true, although it may be bitter and displeasing to peopleBaihaqi

For those Readers that may still remember and know it – my first article in this very same column had started in April 23rd 2003 – over ten years ago! It was titled More Dangerous and Troubled Waters Ahead! – and was after the Iraqi invasion. It seemed that it was an omen, forecast and premonition of things yet to come – so many years later – when the world now has become a very dangerous and difficult place to live! I remember one Iraqi citizen telling Al Jazeera Television – We suffered during Saddam Time – but there was a sort of general safety and security! After the invasion – we suffered far more – but this time there was neither safety nor security either!

3 - BUO TS 3

Between Us Only! The Sequel – 3!

We can also see how unsafe and dangerous the world is now – when children fear death and destruction coming out from the skies – whilst they sleep in their hut dwellings! That some people can become so ungrateful that they can reign down harm and destructions to the same country that had welcomed them in as refugees! And nothing is safe – even sports! Good decent people all over the world who had everything and to look for in life – now facing bleak futures – losing all they had possessed and living homeless and without!

And like in my last article – how so many tents for refugees and displaced peoples have sprung up all over the world! Yet the very same people that had caused or contributed to all these still write books – where they do not show any compunction or reflections of being sorry or apologetic! And have even now mausoleums and libraries built in their honours! Human beings are very strange species and creatures!

B Kirkus Books Reviews

Al Suleimany (Being the Safe Driver!, 2013, etc.) collects his wide-ranging columns from the Oman Daily Observer (an English daily) into one volume.

Subject matter here ranges from Omani politics to social ills, workplace life and religious reflections. Of the book’s purpose, Al Suleimany writes: “It is hoped that people will buy this book for the greater cause of people talking and communicating to each other—and in building tolerance, patience, understanding, love, togetherness and oneness in humanity—as the main theme and focus of this book—and in spreading these universal messages to mankind.”

He treats each disparate topic with the same sensibility, keeping his stated purpose at the forefront. With a tone by turns admonishing and casual, he manages to make moral pronouncements without coming across as condescending or pedantic. Many of his moral concerns center on matters of etiquette, both in the workplace and at home. He writes, “As a human resources professional and consultant, even I have found dealing with family members as the most hard, complex and difficult in comparisons! (sic) Jobs are definitely much easier!”

His opinions are informed by his religion; for instance, in a discussion of debt, he reminds his readers that the Surah II Al Baqarah reads, “If the debtor is in a difficulty, grant him time till it is easy for him to repay.” The profusion of articles is arranged alphabetically by topic, with a table of contents. Despite the status as a collection, the work is more or less disjointed; often, it’s not immediately clear what topic a particular piece seeks to discuss. What redeems the disorder, however, is the force of Al Suleimany’s personality, which comes through in every article, no matter the topic.

A well-rounded perspective of Omani life. Indeed, this is a great write from a great author in the Middle East.

The Humanity Absurdity! Reply

The Humanity Absurdity!

The Parody and Distortion of Life!

I was watching the Television coverage news of refugees and the IDPs Internal Displaced People in more than three Refuge Centres tents in two continents – and the victims again being the same Arabs and Muslims! Human crimes against fellow human beings – the wanton destructions, the calamities, the decadence and the malaise!

The images show beautiful women crying and in desperation of how they were going to feed their families – whilst children being children – played as if nothing has at all changed in their lives – and as if still at home! Children being children also – and certainly making troubles and headaches to their parents and caretakers in the process!

Sad that these same images of such beautiful women in these dire and difficult stages now in their lives – and some for certain for the first time and unexpected too – could have received standing ovations in fashion cat shows – if they had the opportunity to be there! People living in tents out in the cold – or even open places and like in cemeteries. With no food, water and protection the elements of sun, rain, wind and storms!

Refugees A

Images – Wasted Lives in Camps!

In one of the incidents that stuck with me for ages – was this scene of a school teacher confronting a camera man and asking him to leave them alone – and just go away. He said profoundly to the camera man and interviewer – Leave us alone! We were just like you living normally in our own houses – running our own lives as best as we could – and never ever thought that the day would come when we would end as victims of man-made war and end as refugees! So stop filming – it can happen to you too one day! But the camera man had a story to tell – and would just not stop filming! That is humanity for you!

Refugees 2

Images – Refugees Camp and ChFamilies

And here we are in air conditioned houses, cars and offices – with full food bellies complaining of minor things and issues. Go and ask these peoples – and they are ready to swop places with you anytime – at least for the normality, peace and quiet! Including for their children too!

Many of them were just like us – until a few months back – when tragedy and misery struck! Human beings will never learn – because even if they have written the history books – they never sit down to read and understand them – which make us more worse than animals – or just like them! Because the gazelle will only start to run when the cheetah starts to chase them! You would have expected the gazelle to have started running or hiding as soon as the cheetah or lion had appeared on the scene!

This also applies to us! Because we say and do things to one another – and know well in advance what the end results and the consequences are going to be – but yet still do it! It is like an attachment and extension of harm and d

isaster that is is in-built into us – and instead of us being in control – we let these things control us instead!

My frank and honest assessment is that the so-called supposed to be religious people wanting to be politicians instead – and politicians wanting to be religious people too – the wear and tear – the contrasts and the contradictions of the two in the due process of doing all things! And giving opportunities to our adversaries to mock us – and do more harm to us!

ADDENDUM– For the fans and the readers’ information – the Sequel Books to the Between Us Only! series have now been released! Book – Short Takes – Two! and The Sequel – Three! Carry all my articles past 4 years!

From The Books Publishers – The books focus on the study of humanity, human needs, human interaction, society, and economics, as well as the other areas. In fact, the Author covers all socio-economic-political aspects of society, with an emphasis also on working environments such as office politics and dramas.

The Author also addresses society as a whole, and the dire repercussions and consequences of bad ideas and thoughts that can be harmful to society in the broadest sense. Though many topics apply to Oman and GCC countries, the collection of columns organized by Majid Al Suleimany offer a universal appeal because, in his view, society and family are quite similar.

According to the Author, “We have the same needs, wants, worries, concerns and fears – as well as what we like and do not like. This is because the human being is essentially the very same – regardless of race, creed, religion, color, ancestry, and ethnicity!”

The book will encourage deep soul-searching, deep self analysis, and a quest to make the world a better place for all. It has been penned directly from the heart of the Author to the reader. It carries many emotional personal family stories and encounters – including work experiences as a highly-qualified Human Resources Management Consultant.

The book moves quickly, advancing without boundaries, and is careful never to get bogged down in politics. While critical, the writings are also very realistic and practical, and stress the need in society for change in a way that will foster more patience, tolerance, and understanding. About The Book

3 - BUO TS 3

Between Us Only! The Sequel – Two! – has been adapted from Majid Al Suleimany’s successful newspaper columns in The Oman Daily Observer. Utilizing the very best touching emotional based stories and articles from the columns that he has penned over the past four years, Al Suleimany touches on a wide variety of vital and riveting topics. The subject matter will be of interest to everyone from teenagers to grandparents – and from the clerks to the CEOs.

Between Us Only! The Sequel – Two! – focuses on the study of humanity, human needs, human interaction, society, and economics, as well as other areas. In fact, the author covers all socio-economic-political aspects of society, with an emphasis on working environments such as office issues and aspects.

The author also addresses society as a whole, and the dire repercussions and consequences of bad ideas and thoughts that can be harmful to society in the broadest sense. Though many topics apply to Oman and GCC countries, the collection of columns organized by Al Suleimany offer a universal appeal because, in his view, society and family are quite similar.

According to the author, “We have the same needs, worries, concerns and fears—as well as what we like and do not like. This is because the human being is essentially the same—regardless of race, creed, religion, color, ancestry, and ethnicity!”

The book will encourage soul-searching, deep analysis, and a quest to make the world a better place. It has been penned directly from the heart of the author to the reader. It carries many emotional personal family stories and encounters – including work experiences as a highly-qualified human resources management consultant.

The book moves quickly, advancing without boundaries, and is careful never to get bogged down in politics. While critical, the writings are also realistic and practical, and stress the need in society for change in a way that will foster more patience, tolerance, and understanding.

Yet Between Us Only! The Sequel – Three! – is not without controversy. For readers who wish to study Arabic (and Islamic) approaches to the Middle East, the West, and other religions, the book makes excellent references relating to the post-September 11 world. The increases in religious fundamentalism and radicalization in society, and the fact that many youngsters are on board with these aspects, are also taken to task.

The author, through his writings, offers up a tome that is part prayer and part preaching, desperately hoping for a change in the world that will produce a new and more positive direction. “Live and let live in peace, harmony, and co-existence,” is Al Suleimany’s mantra.

Marriages Between Cousins! Reply

Between Us Only!

Marriages Between Cousins!

‘Consanguinity Marriages’

  • Marriages between cousins – or the Medical Term – is ‘Consanguinity Marriages’.
  • In some Western countries – like in USA – they even ban such marriages – and perhaps because medically proved to be harmful and resultant genetic disorders and deformities – especially to the offspring!
  • Encouraged, however, in many Muslims (Arab) societies – mainly for ‘the family, tribe and other ties and preservations’.

I do not know if you agree with me or not – but I am a firm believer that before one can be allowed to marry – he or she should undergo a sort of test to determine suitability of being parents – and bringing children into this world – looking after them as they are growing and being nurtured! Why is it that we have licenses for driving cars – or businesses – or even getting education and training certificates, diplomas and degrees? The idea must sound absurd – but is it really? Think on it for a minute!

In one of the famous light-hearted moments that my late father would not ever forget to his dying day was when he called me in front of the Council of Family Elders in that distant land – and told them that M – still only in Primary school at 16 years – had something to say – a request – to the Elders – and if they would ‘please pay attention’ to listen to him! I was a very naïve trusting boy – and did not notice that the ‘sniggers’ were already forming – and trying hard to be subdued!

Gun Marriages

You are going to marry her!

So my late father says promptly and encouragingly to me – Okay – your Uncles are listening! The word in English remains as Uncle – but in Arabic there are differences between father’s brother and mother’s brother – but they were all there waiting interestingly for me to begin. I started in my broken Arabic – but they encouragingly said to me to speak in the local lingo – we will understand you! Subdued sniggers again!

When I finished talking – everybody had already fallen frolicked on the ground – laughing uncontrollably and incessantly! I was really puzzled and confused as to what was going on – so they again asked me ‘to repeat myself’ – followed by more laughter and mirth. One of the uncles hugged me tightly – ‘you made my day’ – he whispered to me. Warped sense of humour these elders!

Henna

Henna Embroidery

Then they offered another solution to my request – and that was why the council had met! To hear me on the ‘second option’ they had on me – as the first one ‘was completely out of the question’. Then dried dates and coffee were served – whilst I felt like sinking into the ground! Simply and smugly put – it was just a question of ‘the birds and bees’ at my age then – but nobody had explained to me about these things. In today’s lives – I would hardly dare to do that to my son – because I would end as the more ‘Embarrassed One’ than anybody else!

I got him

I got him!

The meeting had been held because I saw that very beautiful girl – and I had followed her to her house. I wanted to get married to her – and that was the ‘Big Joke’ going around! Forget about the ‘birds and the bees’ for a moment – but this girl’s family never allowed anybody outside their tribe to get married into the tribe – even if they were the same Omani stock like us!

It was always marriages inside the tribe – but more between cousins – first ones more! So the meeting of the elders was set – to determine my second option to choose from my other 16 cousins – and if I forget who was who – they would bring them ‘to show me’! Thus the big gathering in the house – M was going to choose a bride today! Happy occasion! My late Mother was so upset that I had not discussed this first with her – she was closer to her own Mother – and thought that we would follow suit – but we were ‘macho kids’!

Indian Marriage

Indian Marriage

But I had badly disappointed them – because it was the other girl ‘I could not have’ that I was still interested in! Years later I met this girl – and we had a long laugh together! Yes – she was married to her first cousin – but the marriage did not last! Even after the children! These families were not ‘really rich and famous’ – but they had their ways of doing things – even now to a lesser extent with the changing times and modernity!

Not My Cousin

Not My Cousin!

Indeed, there was a very beautiful article by one famed (Salalah) Omani lady about these problems in The South – followed by another Omani lady from Muscat in another daily. There is nothing more that I could add except to say that especially with us stock from The Interior – these things still do exist – even if they emigrate to other countries – as vividly displayed by the Council of Elders – and the always dried dates and coffee that followed!

My Cousin

My Cousin!

Years and years later – my heart had gone to one first cousin – but she had her own priorities than me! On the day of the wedding my late poor feeling father saw me depressed and again he asked me – Just say it – and I will stop this wedding just now! Whether she likes it or not – she will get married to you. I said to him – Sorry Dad – let it be – but I certainly do not want an ‘unwilling tied by rope wife’ to come to me!

The sad part was that our late grandparents had already marked me for her to get married to – but none in the lists left behind ever were accomplished – everybody got married to everybody else – with no exceptions – non in cousins – and or first cousins – included! When my son wanted to get married to ‘a sort of a foreigner’ – I tried my father’s ways – but failed badly! Yuk – my son declared – Are you out of your mind? She is my sister – we grew up together! Be serious dad! How can you dare to suggest such a cousin to me?

And that is The Society for you – now! But yes – in some quarters still continue – but slowly changing too! Take Care!

Between Us Only!

Crimes Against Children!

A long time ago – when I used to subscribe to the Public Forumsbefore I had my own websites – now over 10 – from Columns (3 live and 2 previous); Books (2); Road Safety (1); Personal cum Family (3); Opinion (1) and several others – I had a long acrimonious argument with some members contributors – including one famous Omani Columnist – that with due apologies in advance as a taboo stigma subject – that we needed to have a ‘Red District’ to avoid crimes against women and children. There was even a sick joke being circulated around – that prostitution was one of the ‘oldest professions in mankind’ – so what else was new?

Rape 1

Images – India Rape Cases – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Though something against decency, the ways of life and our values – and norms – it was something people felt should be still be had in order to lessen dangers to women – children especially! I was one of the few with the opinion against the idea – and once again – though belatedly – I have been proved correct once more! The point being that those that ‘are sick in the head’ – the weirdos and crackpots – do not need an excuse to do their ignominious dastardly crimes!

Supporters of BJP shout slogans during a protest outside the parliament house in New Delhi

Out of all the countries in the world – and as a good friend – I am ashamed to the core that child rape cases can happen in such a country that had never ever crossed my mind can happen! Though frankly I knew there was capabilities of other types of crimes and violence – but had never imagined that it could happen there to such a shameful level involving innocent children of such young tender age – and something very weird and wrong is happening now there. There are simply no grounds for defence or apologists to come in now. It lays bare and open that despite all the freedoms and permissiveness these things can still happen there.

A protester holds a placard as he stands on top of a police barricade during a protest in New Delhi

Admittedly these things happen everywhere in the world – and even in our midst – but the frequencies and repetitions now are very alarming and a very great case of concern. It is shocking beyond belief! There is simply no excuse for such barbarity and crimes of these kinds against children. Children and women now have become greatest casualty victims of wars, aggression, terrorism and fundamentalism – ‘collateral damages’! – and makes all the Believers’ Prophets turn in their graves – including the ‘beliefs, saints and gods’ of the others!. What is happening to us now?

India Rape Case 1 India Rape Case 2 India Rape Case 3 India Rape Case 4 India Rape Case 5

Images – India Rape Cases – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

There is simply no excuse and the whole world needs to speak out. Sometimes one asks himself if ‘swift and quick’ justice is the answer to scare the rest and put them in line those that are contemplating and or may contemplate such ideas in the future! Frankly, I do not know the answer – because even in those countries where such things do happen – like hangings from the highest points and leaving the body(ies) for the whole public to see – or public beheadings – these things still do happen – even if not frequently and more like in the past! I must admit I do not have the solution nor answer – and your guess and opinion is as good as mine here!

A long time ago, a peer was joking with me about ‘the evils of drinking’. He told me about this story of a young woman who wanted to seduce a handsome young Mullah (Priest). So she tried all the excuses to get the man inside the house – but the frolicked man just refused. Finally, one day she asked him if she could ask ‘a religious lady question’ to him – and being private and embarrassing – she got him finally to come inside to hear the question. Keep remembering this is only a joke – before someone starts to jump on someone else!

So the ‘lady’ tells the Sheikh what is really in her mind – and the priest rejects this vehemently! Finally, she tempts the priest to try ‘a new brand imported’ wine – so just to get away – the priest agrees to take a swipe! All the time the priest says this is a lesser crime – than adultery – so just to get out of the house! Then he takes a bit more – and some more! Sorry for the vulgarity, coarseness and the lucidness – but soon the priest is tempted to do what the young lass had all the time wanted him to do in the first instance!

The woman’s young daughter sees them – and starts to scream out aloud ‘on what she is seeing is going on’! The misfit priest tries to silence the young girl – and in the due course and process – suffocates her – and not only drinks alcohol – but commits also adultery and murder – thus the evils of drinking! All from that first sip!

It has been established that in many cases of domestic violence – and especially involving children – are contributed to excessive use of alcoholism by the male partner. I was watching this BBC Television Programme of domestic violence there – and where once was few or unheard – is now becoming more prevalent and frequent in even UK amongst Asian families – and Muslim ones too – and the culture and conflicts – which is going to be my next column article titled A Question of Loyalty!

Till then – Take Care!

The Burning World! Reply

Between Us Only!

The Burning World!

If you are (un)lucky like me, you will note that your Doctor knows more about you far more than you can ever imagine – sometimes to most discomfiting and embarrassing levels – even before you have fully explained to him your full symptoms! Normally I try to see him – but this time I was given instead a very charming (pretty) lady doctor instead! She then told me that she would have to do some tests on me – and if I was feeling being embarrassed by being seen by her – maybe I was emitting body signs unknowingly! Anyway, as I was being seen by her – in walks my usual regular doctor excusing himself why he could not see me – but in parting remarked – Not depressed again? Have you started watching the news again? I just dismally and nonchalantly smiled – and say nothing in return!

Syria 1

Burning Syria 1 – Images For Demonstration Purposes Only

I was teasing Great Madam Wife – GMW – that maybe I should write my 9th book – this time a Novel? I was telling her I wanted to write about the family seeing so many new films now made out of family based stories – but then she cautioned me that if there are some still not speaking to you – this time if you do – then majority – if not all the family – will not ever talk to you – especially if it is going to come out in a film! I have a very good story to tell the world – so I view at the ‘opportunity costs’ – as she is absolutely right here! So I end watching the news to pass my retirement time!

The other day a good Indian friend of mine called me that his company in Sohar was looking for a temporary HR Consultant – and if I would be interested? I had been to the place before – and seen ‘the pushing for getting jobs’ – so I politely and tactfully declined! At this stage of my life – and not being that healthy-wise – I do not need the hassles and the headaches – even if the pay is good. I assure you it is not a ‘question of sour grapes’ – but I remember what our late father used to tell us – The one who denies you beans – has just reduced your gas intake!

Syria 2

Burning Syria 2 – Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!

The truth be said that Al Jazeera Television has done us Arabs great and proud by its popularity and intake – and its coverages and programmes. I was amazed to hear that even in USA and Europe – if there is an issue – like the Boston rally incident – people have turned to Al Jazeera to get ‘reliable truthful news’ – and that is a feather in the cap for Al Jazeera Television!

Some of the Arab World programmes shown recently in Al Jazeera Television have shown the link of past history and incidents to current events and happenings – and that is quite expedient and revealing – at least to me! Their deep self soul search analysis and break down of events and happenings in history – and their linkages to what is happening now!

Syria 3

Burning Syria 3 – Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!

In truth and actual fact, one is even shocked and baffled to the core as to why it took that long to unfold in what is really happening now on the ground! The reduced effect in enormity and delay in the repercussions and outcomes is shocking beyond belief! The outcomes are to be expected and natural of wronged peoples – and the injustices and blatant disregard of human values and justices.

That even the coming of the Great Prophet PBUH – we still can do these things to one another! When a sceptic remarks that’ more Arab blood was spilt by fellow Arab guns – than from our adversaries’ – and you have no alternative except to agree with him – makes a triumphant victory for those bent to belittle and to discredit us!

Syria 4

Burning Syria 4 – Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Then I watch the news in the other places – the earthquakes – the floods – collapsed buildings – the rampage killings and destructions of innocent lives – including children and women – the destructions from falling missiles – and the slaughter of even babies and children – from the weapons coming out from the sky! The ironical and sad part is the person who has directed the onslaughts goes home in peace and comfort to his family – his wife and children – whilst killing of the other families and children – is just ‘carrying out orders – and doing one’s job’! Human beings are sickening – and worse than even the animals at their worst case scenarios!

Syria 5

Burning Syria 5 – Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Then there are the demonstrations for jobs – looking for jobs – afraid of losing jobs and benefits – looking for ‘more money’ – lost incomes, investments, savings and pensions. So many stories of once nice decent good peoples – now on bad times – and of such same people committing or tempting to commit suicides – because they have lost everything – and life is not worth living anymore!

Reminds me decades ago of a relative girl with a son – who called me in desperation – saying she was contemplating suicide – because she was ‘not happy in marriage and her husband – and husband family’ – but I did not take it seriously then – till I learnt the hard way too late that she actually did it! And all the time listening to ‘the inner voice’ of do not get involved – or the involvement could turn more serious and sour too!

Spain Protests

Demonstrations in Spain

Whatever belief and religion you have – the fundamental and basic teachings and preaching are the very same – because subduing, turbulent violence, brutality and aggressive methods and styles solve nothing – as the programmes show! Past incidents of over 20 years come out in the open again – and again from time to time – ever again! Like I always say – the very same things – and sometimes the repetition just becomes stifling, mundane and boring!

Basically, we human beings have the same needs, worries, concerns and fears – as well as what we like and do not like! This is because the human being is essentially the same – regardless of race, creed, religion, color, ancestry, and ethnicity! And always stressing the need for change in a way and will that will foster more patience, tolerance, and understanding – between people, society and nations!

Like my good Indian friend says – something in Hindi – I forget – Karma and the other word – but something like ‘just desserts (sweet)’ coming to those that deserve it – and or as our good friends the Brits say – what goes around; comes around! Or the East African one – If you destroy someone’s house – your house will also be destroyed in due process! Sometimes after you have conveniently forgotten too! There is also this tell-tale sign of the end of the world – when somebody dies – and you feel jealous that it was not ‘you that had died instead’!

Now do you see why I was seeing the doctor now? May Allah God redirect us all to the right path and ways – Amin. Take Care!

Holier Than Thou

Holier Than Thou! Reply

For Wednesday – April 24th 2013.

Between Us Only!

Holier Than Thou!

Whosoever has in his heart, even a atom of pride he will not enter paradiseThe Islamic Hadith

Holier Than Thou – being self-righteousness – is a feeling or display of – usually smug – moral superiority derived from a sense in one that one’s beliefs, actions, or affiliations are of greater virtue and importance than those of the other person. It is the acting like one is superior to others, condescending, patronising, belittling and ridiculing others! Always exhibiting an attitude of being superior – of being virtuous; self-righteous and in being pious compared to the others. Like riding that high horse – looking down on people – and with their heads in the clouds attitudes, approaches and focuses.

Proud 1

Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!

People will simply not change in this. This is a very big disease in society now – has always been – and will continue to be! With a few Baizas more in their pockets – people always change for the worse – not for the better. If there is one subject and topic that I have covered intensely – than this is one of them! 10 years later after my first column – and still writing on the very same topic now!

That tells and says a lot of things! Will people change? I do not think so – even if bad things will happen to them! Once they are back and have recovered – they are back again! Just the same way we drive! After seeing a nasty accident – we drive carefully – only to revert to our old selves – after some time – and distance! The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story – though Mr. Hyde always wins!

Holier Than Thou

I will agree with you fully that it is easy to preach – to practise is something else! Frankly, during to my heyday – when I started my consultancy business – and business was booming – I was accused by a family member that with my powerful SUV I was threatening a small saloon car full of youngsters – who had cut in front of me – and were joking and laughing aloud – that they had beaten me to the only left car park slot – though I had already indicated I was turning into it! Last two weeks I was laughing to myself – because this same person who was able to get a similar powerful SUV was doing the very same thing this time – only this time it was on a high way. I looked at him – and smiled – but said nothing! Why do so – when I needed the ride?

Conceited

Sometimes people think that because they have been working for so long at a certain place – then they have become indispensable and irreplaceable! They think no one or anything can touch them. Especially if it is in a field that their services are really needed. It applies to both locals and expatriates – in rare cases even to those on visit visas – but do temporary and consultancy works in between. Or doing jobs that should by laws and regulations be done by locals – but instead they are occupying the positions!

Arrogant 2

Even if there are no such laws or regulations – but common sense and logic just dictates that these jobs must be done by the locals themselves! For their own protection, preservance – loyalty, well-being – and future, destiny and legacy. I really admire those countries that were (or still are) under boycotts – despite all odds they are still able to survive – and continue to produce – simply because they put their own people – first and foremost – and paramountly too!

Though I was a citizen in that distant land – but they had removed me from my first assignment to the more sensitive position in the Defense Department – because at that particular time – they were not sure of my loyalties – and compounded after the bloody Zanzibar Revolution sagas – and its aftermaths! They transferred me to the lesser Ministry of Finance – where I was seen as a ‘lesser risk’. Yet I handed the job over with no grudges – because though did not agree with them – could not blame them even! We do not do these things in Oman – though some may tend to argue privately and in confidence. Whatever the case – we need – there is need now – to prioratise – because of changing loyalties, affiliations, associations and allegiances!

Arrogant 1

Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!

I am talking here more on expatriates in such sensitive strategic positions more – unless there are real identified practical and needed reasons for continuing in keeping them in those positions. Last two weeks, I read a letter from an irate Omani youngster – who is Media qualified – but still looking for a job – whilst we have so many expatriates in these positions. I got an email from a highly qualified Omani young girl – and still looking for a job two years on. She either gets ridiculous offers from not only expatriates – but from our own – afraid that this girl may prove to be a high flier – and their future boss even! How long will this antipathy and indifferences continue? I ask you?

A lot of good things have been done – and are still being done! A few years back I was stuck in a traffic jam with my then American CEO. As we watched – we saw two delegations from two opposing different countries pass in front of us. The good man remarked – You should be proud you are Omani! This is the only country around that can talk to both sides! I held back a tear – because who cares? It will just be wasted – again!

Unless and until, we do identify the ‘Old Guards’ in our midst – and start releasing them off for early retirements for example – things will just not move forward. There has to be meeting of the minds for things to move. In my earlier articles – I cautioned about ‘The Insiders’ that are people that are careful to oversee that nothing has changed – or moved forward. These are like the ‘cancerous cells’ in our body – and must be treated and or be removed – either tactfully and diplomatically – or in other ways and methods – if there is simply no changes!

And things have first to start with these characteristics of being holier than thou’ – or we can do whatever we want – because we are needed – and nobody or nothing can touch us!

Between Us Only!

The Blood In All Of Us!

Frankly and honestly, I do not know about you – but I have yet to see green, blue or yellow blood! It is all red blood! If I show you a jar of blood and I ask you to guess whom it belonged to – your guess is as good as mine!

Blood

The other week there was a good article by one famed Omani Columnist in the other newspaper about problems and repercussions in Mixed Marriages – between locals and foreigners – and how they are not able to survive the onslaughts and pressures that they usually get from within the family and from outside the family! It depends from one situation to the other – but in many cases than one – it is the family ones that finally cracks open the marriage – even if there are children involved in the marriages!

This same week my sister-in-law – my younger brother ex wife – a British girl from Yorkshire – passed away in UK. The sad part is that the children with their children too splitting in loyalties and affiliations – with half taking on the S family surname – whilst the other taking the mother family side! Sadly my brother was not such an observing religious type – so those who followed his steps were equally not religious and observing – though the Muslim names had remained!

Hilary-Bailey-01[1]

From The Archives

It reminded me of a film of ex Yugoslavia – based on real facts – where some ‘Muslim’ women were rounded up by the Serbs in Srebrenica during the bloody civil wars there decades back. The ‘comfort women’ were ‘shocked’ for such round ups – because they even ‘did not know they were Muslims’ – apart from the similar names – because they ate pork, did not fast – and alcohol was just a glass of tinted water! They enjoyed life to the core – like their ‘other fellow citizens’ then! Even in physique and resemblances too! And what if the differences are not even national – but more in ethnicity – like in the preceeding case?

There was a documentary in Al Jazeera Television I had seen a few days back about the bloody massacres in Rwanda – titled (A) Letter From My Child! It is about Shyaka – a 13-year-old boy with a disarming smile – is only now a few years younger than his mother was when she was raped in 1994. He is one of the estimated 25,000 children of the 500,000 women who were raped during the Rwandan genocide.

Although it is illegal, many raped women in Rwanda had abortions. Some killed their newborn child. Others abandoned their child. Most of the mothers who bore these babies never told their children the truth. Goretti – Shakya’s mother – is one of them. Shyaka is a smart, inquisitive teenager who has been asking questions about his father for some time now. And there are quite a few people in Goretti’s village who know what happened to her. People who know that Shyaka is the result of rape.

Shyaka

Image Shyaka – A Letter From My Child!

Beatrice Mukangenzi, a family friend explains: “When the children ask what has happened, a lot of mothers feel they have to lie. One says this, the other says that. But all of it is a lie. “The children feel that their mother lies because she’s not at ease. That is why children continue asking until they hear the truth. Talking about sexuality is a taboo here in Rwanda. Rape is not a subject that is talked about …. It’s sad. You are the victim … but when you’re raped, it’s as if it is all your fault. So a lot of women hide what has happened to them because they are afraid to become totally ostracised.”

The boy remembers that his mother used to beat him frequently – sometimes for no apparent reason – except for the love-hate relationships of the mother to the son – the internal conflict of being and remaining maternal – and the son as a result of ethnicity rape case – and it reminding her about it all the time when she sees her son – and especially when the son misbehaves!

The boy writes – Dear Mum – When I became 9 years old … I started to think about my father for the first time. Because all my friends talk about their fathers – except me. I have nothing to talk about who is my father really is! . I asked you then for the first time about my father. I ask you: where is my father? I want to see my father. I hope you will be able to answer me! “- Shyaka, 13 years old writes to the Mother. The mother cannot read English – so the letter is translated by the aunt for him! Is Goretti going to answer the letter from Shyaka and tell her son the truth about his descent? Do not want to surprise you with an answer. Just watch the programme – or Google it!

It is very sad pathetic story of human injustices, paranoia, animosity and hatred of humans to one another – that even makes animals to be far better species than what we really are at our best! We see the same scenarios unfolding now in Syria – and that is the saddest and most tragic part out of it all now!

We used to joke sometimes – in bad taste – to our late father – his real namesake like him and the names – is half foreign! The poor old man smiled – but you could see he did not like the joke! But what else could he do – but just grin and bear it! It is surprising how death can easily bring families in together – from all the corners of the world – even if briefly – until the next time.

Frankly the children can understand – but it is more confusing to the grandchildren! One of them was crying to me – Granny – the children in school tease and joke at me. They tell me – go away you Arab! But I am not Arab – am I Granny? No – I ruefully say to him – you are not! Even if it is a half-truth! What else can I say to him?

Sister in law – H – you will always be my family! Rest in eternal peace – Amin Amen Take Care!

New Book – Between Us Only! The Sequel – 3!

The Book Extended Description

BOOK 3 - ID 4153263

Between Us Only! The Sequel – Three! has been adapted from Majid Al Suleimany’s successful newspaper columns in The Oman Daily Observer. Utilizing the very best work from the columns he penned over the past four years, Al Suleimany touches on a wide variety of vital and riveting topics. The subject matter will be of interest to everyone from teenagers to grandparents, and from humble clerks to CEOs.

Between Us Only! The Sequel – Three! focuses on the study of humanity, human needs, human interaction, society, and economics, as well as other areas. In fact, the author covers all socio-economic-political aspects of society, with an emphasis on working environments such as office space.

It carries many emotional personal family stories and encounters—including work experiences as a highly-qualified human resources management consultant.

The book moves quickly, advancing without boundaries, and is careful never to get bogged down in politics. While critical, the writings are also realistic and practical, and stress the need in society for change in a way that will foster more patience, tolerance, and understanding.

Yet Between Us Only! The Sequel – Three! is not without controversy.

Bad Hearts At Work!

Accepted that it is quite unfair and unethical to generalise some life issues and aspects – but there is nothing that shakes me to my very foundation and breaks me into smithereens – than to find this thing as the on-going in thing nowadays especially! That is supposed to be so-called ‘some observing and religious people’ having the most mean, envious, jealous and bad hearts that you can ever find on the face of the earth!

Thus making just a mockery and façade of their practices and as being completely irrelevant and different to the real truth and reality! Give me an unobserving drunk but yet who has a good clean heart any day to these said individuals! You may well say that I am getting old and over sensitised – perhaps with bad experiences I have even become bitter, cynical and sceptical even – but if we real soul search and analyse ourselves – I think many people would agree with my sentiments and feelings here.

bad 2

Of course there would be some that would say – you have said it all before – so what else is new? Move on – let things be! You can simply never change some – unless they really need and call out for help! A good friend of mine even cautioned me that you are now becoming like those old type of records (18 and 43 rpm) that have been played for long repeatedly – and the music that comes out – unalike the new CD gadgets – of ‘losing the original touch’! Forget it – you have done your bit! Give us new topics – or move along!

Do people remember your personal sacrifices in order to see there are ethics, professionalism and transparencies – justice and fairness – at the work front? Not at all! The same people that you made sacrifices to are now teasing and talking about you behind your back! Just wasted efforts – wasted dedications and loyalties only! No one bothers to acknowledge – or to remember! If you are looking for reward or acknowledgement – then get it from The Good Lord only – and from no one else – family, relatives and friends included!

Frankly, I can recall real live examples that I had encountered in my career life. Both deal with expatriates and as I came into the Companies. In both cases, the complaints were against in one a Very Senior Manager (my direct local boss!) and where they had complained to even the CEO- but nothing had happened. They thought my coming in ‘would solve their problem’. In their words – you look like a person that one can talk to’ – unalike the rest! The complaint was the Top Guy making ‘continuous very nasty racialist jokes’ on one ethnic expatriate group. The joke had lost its ‘original touch and taste’ and was now just annoying and upsetting them intensely!

The other was how Junior Expatriates were treated by The Senior Management vis-à-vis their contracts, renewals and terminations.- unalike the more senior ones! Please keep remembering the point that I was new and on a temporary contract in both cases. Not on full time contract basis. Despite all odds against me – I was able to solve both the problems despite these. That is what distinguishes a real competent professional ethical HR from the rest of the crowd. So whilst it is so easy to judge others and go by heresay – it is important to do your job in HR as being ‘the Company’s Conscience Keeper’! Both incidents are in my Arab Management books including many others too! My website www.myown-ebooks.com

It seems to be the in-fashion thing nowadays that the more bad things you do to others the more up career-wise and rewards you get nowadays. That is why people like us would always suffer. But I am afraid and scared of my Allah SWT God always – even if I remain unremembered and forgotten – and to rub salt into the wound – ridiculed and poked fun at!

This article is dedicated to one great high profile lady – whom I really respect and admire – and whose husband had died recently from complications of being diabetic. May Allah God give you patience and forbearance in this tragedy and May Allah God rest his soul in eternal peace in this world and the next – take him away from the punishment of the grave – and open the doors of the highest heavens for him – Amin

You will forgive me lady F – I really had tried to get him the job – so he could come back to Oman and be with you in his last few years before dying – but it was not left for me alone to make the job offer – though he had a better job offer in the same profession in the other GCC country! What more can I say now?

All My Combined Works!

Even if emotionally precarious and not yet crippled!

  • Never play with the feelings of others because you may win the game – but you will surely loose the person for good! – Anon
  • Treat others as you want them to treat you because what goes around; comes around! – Arthur Wing Pinero
  • Writing is the only profession where no one considers you ridiculous if you earn no money. - Jules Renard

It has been said so many times before that there is nothing for surety and permanent in life except God and Death only!

But then we human beings become ungrateful and disconcerting when good things have happened to us. We become proud, contemptuous, conceited, patronising and condescending – and our heads are held high in the clouds – and look down on all the others – and as if nothing untoward will ever or can happen to us! We become so sure and confident on this – that we just do not care or bother about others – and even those that look up at us – and those in need and support – and those less fortunate than ourselves!

Like so many times before – people have said the very same things about writing – that writing is the only profession that people do not consider you ridiculous if you do not make any money! I would know with boxes and boxes of unsold books at home returned from the bookshops because they need to make more space for other books where at least they get no complaints if the books are returned – and where more credit facilities and times are given than yours truly!

Time and time again I have said the very same things – I stumbled into writing – it is more a hobby and passion for me than considering it as a career or business opportunity. Let alone the returns being long and tedious – it is also unreliable and undependable. In my job as a Human Resources Consultant,

I was shocked beyond belief to find that even professionally qualified writers in jobs make lesser money than even well placed PROs for that matter! People look down on writers as something just average and mediocre at best – even if odd hours are put in – and the job is at the higher risk of job scales in personal dangers, harm – and even your own life too. If you read about what they write in places like Journalists Without Borders and find the number of people that have their freedom – and even lives – lost because of their writings – and what they believe in! There is no tool that can easily enrage and infuriate people than what is being written – and what people can read.

Sometimes the scheming and curtailing can be like in dramas and plays – and has to be done to show it being ‘decent, clean and neat’ – so other angles are looked at to pin you in. Even artificial and trumped up charges are being made – or even closed cases are being revived – just to pin you down and silence you!

That is why there are many emotions and traumas with Writers – and especially if the family are not supportive and backing the writer. Things said why do you waste your time in writing more new books – when the old ones are all over the house and not sold! I guess that is one way of looking at things in short focuses of money and profits being the trump priority cards! And focuses and outlooks!

Or when a foreign person calls you a local writer to ‘come and collect your (un writeable) books – because they are just occupying space – and we need to stock other books instead. That is why I wrote my article last week of ‘Biting The Hand That Feeds You!

It soon leads to troubles in relationships and in dealings – and even more worse when those that are in the same pot holes like you in writing feel they are better off by getting regular salaries in twisting and distorting what you have originally written and intended! I think we have seen those plays and dramas that even before it starts we know what the end will be – because we have seen it all before and just happening as expected to happen.

I am very confident, sure and certain that a time will indeed come – even if far away that future generations may ask where are the full works of MAS – and I want my great great grandchildren to be able to show – here they are – perhaps a Charles Dickens or George Orwell of the future! That time will come for sure – and I will be smiling in my grave – not turning! Biting The Hand – That Feeds You!

And ending with licking the boot that kicks you!

In writing especially my book titled – A Cry For Help! – www.myown-ebooks.com – I was astounded and shocked beyond belief to find that some few expatriates in good positions and in our country having rather very poor, dim and narrow minded extremely prejudicial biased and racialist outlooks on the country! The more shocking part is that they are courageous and brave enough to say all these things without any fear or inhibition – the audacity of it all! They do not even attempt to cover it with a sugar coating – but give you the pill bitter as it is! I wrote the book – but it was just like talking to brick walls – and just wasted futile exercise for simply nothing! Even one Western CEO admitted to me that ‘he could not believe such things happened in Oman – you do not desrve such things to be done to you!

A - A Cry For Help!

The Book – A Cry For Help! – www.myown-ebooks.com

Recently I read two articles that still continued to shock me to the core! One article was one where a columnist (foreign) was indicating why he chose an airline that was not national to go home on holidays. Mr. Columnist has full rights to choose whatever airline you wish – but do we need the citizens need to know why the preference – and if there is anything you wanted others to know is between you and the National Airline (Oman Air) – we are passengers like you – and talking to us will not change anything – unless that is you want us too to follow you to abandon our national airline – for whimsical reasons!

The other was coincidentally a good Indian Columnist with his heart in the right place – and in remembrances – chiding a Westerner Blogger who is at the same time a Teacher in English at the University level in Oman – and residing in Oman – ‘is apparently full of malice and hatred for Palestinians and Arabs. His generalisations are morbid and so are his attempts to distort truth. Or what else can the reason be for such malice towards the Palestinians..? A good question indeed – and thank you very much for the bold daring action! I hope nothing would happen to you – we can only pray for the risk taking!

I thought these things had now stopped post The Arab Spring Uprisings – but you will forgive my ignorance – because I have been out of offices for quite some time now – and do not know what is really going on now! Incidentally, I am also being protected from hearing and getting bad news from my ‘caring advisors’ – because the last bad news nearly ended me in being hospitalised – being acute diabetic and with eyes problems on top!

I was actually talked out of ‘doing some rather unexpected actions’ on my part out of desperation and reciprocity seeking! What turned the tables for me is hearing my 5 year old granddaughter asking her Mum – Why does Granny look so sad and unhappy? Why don’t you ask him, retorted her Mother> The girl replied – I do not want to hurt his feelings more – and that did it! Our late Mother always used to tell us that sometimes messages that need to be given to us comes in the format of the innocent angels saying unexpected and unbelievable things to us! Just to caution and guide us accordingly!

A long time ago I was invited –n with other Staff – to a family home of one expatriate. I needed to go the gents – so I told my host my dilemma. I found it strange that he had to consult his Madam Wife first before showing me which toilet to use – which I found later belonged to the housemaid! The stranger thing happened next! As I was returning to the sitting room – I saw this big African parrot in the kitchen. Feeling like a cup of water I took a glass – and was drinking it when this upset and annoyed hostesses was drilling me what I wanted in the kitchen? This is not a place for guests! She verbally reprimanded me! Then she said ‘really awesome nasty things’ to her husband about my intrusions! Dinner was not served – but I pulled Madam out – and in the car explained to her why!

Next morning my good Western CEO wanted to know what happened at his deputy house? So I asked him point blank – do you really want to know to take remedial action – or just as a matter of courtesy – and nothing else more? So I told him – when I realised he really wanted to know! Soon we were on the loud speaking phone format with the chairman – who was kind enough to say to me – I want the CEO to know too – so we will speak in English! The poor Invitee did not know what hit him next – how it came into being – but there was a letter signed by him the CEO – and co-signed by me – The Head of Human Resources – for ‘regret that your position will no longer be required due to the emergence of two departments – and the other guy heading the department!

I guess as he was in the plane with his family he wished he was not so hospitable to invite the others to his house – company rented anyway! Sadly he had a very high well paid job – that he threw away – just because of his ‘biases and prejudices’ – and sadly and tragically against the people and the country that offered you the job in the first instance. I think he thought he was still in the other GCC country where such things still exist – but thank God – the doors are closing now in Oman!

A long time ago an Arab President had said – The friend of today can be the enemy of tomorrow – and the enemy of today can be the friend of tomorrow! With shifting allegiances and alliances – we need to prioratise – and watch things out now – who are our real friends – and who are not! We owe it to our destiny, legacy and our future too!

In one of the companies that I had worked – there was a circular for expatriates being posted to a certain country – that went through the Arab Spring storm! It just said – be careful of the office driver, the gardener, the cook, the office mate (locals) – because ‘they all work for the state’ – and will try to entrap you! Thank God I feel great and elated that we have a wise and benevolent leader – and the people are generally receptive in welcome and in hospitality – and importantly respectful of ‘the invited guests ‘ in our country. We have even changed our weekends to remain accommodating! What more do you want?

Hosni Mubarak Family

The Family: In Crisis! Reply

The Family: In Crisis!

The Family is a real-life documentary in 2-parts by The Television Al Jazeera English. In a tale of politics, power and greed, this two-part series examines the Mubarak family – close and in detail – like that of any family – when facing crisis – whether from within or outside – if real or created and as artificial.

As Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president, lies on his deathbed, The Family offers a fresh perspective on the history and inner workings of the man, his wife and his family. It is the story of Hosni Mubarak – along with his wife Suzanne and their two sons – is a tale of politics, power, ambition and greed. It is a story of a humble birth and a rise through the ranks of the Egyptian Air Force, culminating in a 30-year reign over the fulcrum of the Arab world – all set against the backdrop of a tumultuous region.

The first of these two-hour documentaries shows Mubarak as the unassuming and loyal lieutenant of the famous Egyptian President – Gamal Abdel Nasser and Anwar al-Sadat – who found himself thrust into the top job – brought to power by a twist of fate.

Family 1

Family Images – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

The second shows Mubarak as president, developing into a dictator and surrounded by a family with an insatiable appetite for self-interest. Distanced from his people by those in the inner circle – advisors and the family – and not knowing what was really happening on the grounds!

This is a tale of how power corrupts, of how a once-modest man turned into an all-powerful pharaoh who rode roughshod over the wishes of his subjects – and of a dramatic downfall. The Family includes testimony from those who served with Mubarak as well as members of his family and inner circle and photographs from the family album.

Two parts that really touched and moved me and where I could touch base and associate – is seeing poor Hosni Mubarak really traumatised – broken down and shocked beyond belief – when his favourite grandson Mohamed at age of about 12 died by a mysterious disease. At this particular time – he really wanted to quit politics – because he simply could not take it – handle it anymore! He had literally given up in life – and just wanted to disappear from the lime lights! But he was persuaded to continue by his family and the ‘inner circles’ – because the ‘country needed him to continue in that position’! Sometimes that first ‘gut feelings’ are always proved right!

Family 2

Family Images – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

The second part was when the sons fought furiously blaming each other for the downfall of their father the president – and his destiny and legacy. The army warning that the family had to abdicate and move on to Sharm-el-Shaikh – and Madam Wife refusing – and had to be literally dragged by her sons to the waiting military helicopter!

It is an intriguing documentary – that made me watch both the two parts continuously! And like most families – whether you are a President of a country – or just a retired HR Professional like me – at the time of crisis – especially from within – and even from the outside more – the true identity and ingredients – the mantle and the makeup of the family comes out! Whether you will rise to the occasion – and take the high road – or disintegrate and break up into pieces – and families split in the middle – or as many cases – more than two sides – with some deciding to remain ‘neutral’ – or move between sides – as the time ensues and proceeds!

Hosni Mubarak Family

Hosni Mubarak Family Portrait – The Good Old Times!

This documentary – according to my assessment – is a study of human nature, approaches, attitudes and focuses in life – that and the students in social studies should undertake – including Historians – and those who write bibliographies too! Not just to study this family in history – but if I was an Egyptian and with access – as a record for future history and records – and as a learning process for future Arab Leaders – specifically and in particular!

I know personally people that we used to work in the same places – and who are now millionaires – whilst poor me continues to depend on my pension money – and the few money in writing – columns and my books! People who were so economical that they were looking for the cheapest airfares and holidays that they could find – to now having all the money in the world – and their own private jets and yachts too! Have they remained the same – or have they changed dramatically now? For the better or worse? A one million dollar question!

Family A

Family Images – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

I always like to quote Alexander The Great 3 wishes when he was on his death bed – I came with empty hands in this world – and I go now with empty hands to my grave. All the power, fame and riches I leave behind me! And the other expression – I wanted to change the world – but the world changed me – instead! (Anon)

It is easy to talk about others and preach – but if you ask me honestly and frankly – that is what most of us are doing nowadays and as the-in fashion and style thing to do! But a long time ago – when we were kids and were rich – we had our heads in the clouds – and treated rather raw and badly the other children that were poor and in need. Was it God’s punishment that by misfortune of fate – and wrong choices in life – we went broke and bust – and got to learn what it was to be in need and in want – to find the real truth and bitterness in life? I guess so! Pride always goes before a fall!

Husni Mubarak in Court

Sad Ending – In Court!

The other day I met this young man driving this oldish type of 4WD. So I was interested in talking to him – and found an excuse to do so! There is no good picker of conversation than to admire and comment on a car – and I had recognised the numbers as something uniquely linked to my date of birth! Yes – he was the son of my good friend and work peer who had died a few years ago. The car is still going strong years later – whilst the poor man’s bones in the ground are all that is left now!

Whatever belief you have in life – the basic and fundamental teachings and outlooks in living with others in life – and those that are poorer and more in need are basically the same! Even from those pagans that worship the baobab tree – the river or others! But will we human beings ever learn? I doubt so!

Money and Materialism!

Continuing from my last article With A Heart of Stone! I came to this world empty handed – and I now go to my grave empty handed – King Alexander The Great Last three wishes!

I forgot to add this stipulation. In this complex and difficult times facing all of us, it is best to avoid creating new enemies and adversaries – even if they are artificial and farfetched – since one needs all the friends and support one can get – instead of doing the opposite in your evil desire to ‘fix him’ revenges and bravados! Forget even about doing good things – and people doing bad things to you instead in reciprocity and gratitude! Truthfully, some people and things will just not change – whatever else that may go around them – even if the ground below them will collapse – and throw them far down to the cliffs and rocks far below them!

Money 2

One would also be excused to think that after decades of marriage and getting children and grandchildren together – this early stage in youth and in marriages – of always being individualistic, subjective and inward looking – with a craze for consumerism, materialism and money would eventually disappear. But disappear it does not! I do not remember now who said it but the saying goes that once you cross 30 years old – it is like a cast that has hardened to such an extent – that what is left is to just accept it only!

I have written before in this same column about Ubuntu Philosophy – which you can Google Search or find the article here in my website. In the East African lingo – they say Uutu – which is similar to Ubuntu of South Africa. It just means that ‘humanity is better than things (materials; items)’

In one of the places I had worked – there was this incident of ‘supposed to be happily married young couple – both highly educated and professionals – and with children too – that took each other to Court – because of issues of a grand villa they were building together. One wanted the villa to be rented out so they could pay back the mortgage – whilst the other wanted to stay in this large villa – when the family was just too small for the big villa (of small heart!) – just to impress friends! One would have imagined that this fundamental decision was made before building jointly – unless one crossed the other later on!

Toddler with shopping bags.

I know personally many of the ladies that had never in their lives bought any mobile phone or car – but wait for the husband to buy a new one – before the confiscation, monopolization and take over proceeds! And to add insult over injury – they are proud of their actions – and boast it all around to their friends. Yet still in many cases than one – if the husband has run in short – and needs help and or assistance to pay the car monthly installments – she is most reluctant to do so! I have seen so many cases of supposed to be well off and rich people that are miserly and dastardly to the core – and just unashamed and uncaring – that it jolts the mind and the imagination to the core – and its very foundations!

One time – long time ago – I was collecting some funds for building a Masjid in the island we grew up in that distant land. So this supposed to be rich and well off prosperous famous person called me. I have very good news for you – he beamed to me on the phone – come to my office – and see the surprise! So I excitedly and hurriedly went – and as soon as I was out from his office – I opened the envelope expecting to see thousands of Rials in cheque form. There was only one small denomination note inside – and I just could not believe it! When I told people about it – they laughed and sneered at me – lucky for you – normally he does not pay that much for anybody else!

Money 1

All Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!

In one of the places that I worked – keep guessing! – I normally used to bring my sandwich and some fruits for lunch – and did not go out for lunch with the boys. So this person comes to me with good and sound advice – why don’t you stretch your legs and go out – instead of staying in the office all day? Come – I invite you out for lunch. If he said it to me only in English – I would have said maybe he does not know the meaning of the word ‘invite’ – but he repeated it to me in Arabic!

There were others in the group lunch. When the bill came – the ‘Inviter’ said to me – your share is OMR 3.2. Aghast I looked into my wallet and was short. So I turned to the other more friendly guy – whom I even hardly knew even – and asked him if he could help me out – and that I forgot the balance in my Office. It was a Big Joke in the Office for quite some time!

People always say – Do not upset two kinds of people in the Offices – the HR and the Finance guys! This person had a HR issue sometime later – what goes around; comes around! Trust M to ‘throw the book back at him’ – for embarrassing me like this in front of the others! Usually I do not break any rules – but may tempt to bend the rules sometimes! There was simply no bending this time!

I think personally many of the issues are possibly family, hereditary and in upbringing – though a person true nature, character, personality – and approaches of life – are in grown too – because even in the same family – you can find people are different from one to the other! If you ask me if I want to be rich but be miserly – I would beg you to leave me as I am – and that is the greatest and favour that you will be doing to me. Keep your riches and gifts – but just do not forget what Alexander The Great had said!

With A Heart of Stone!

No Mercy In The Hearts!

Or Just Hearts Made out of Stones!

  • Allah (God) will not give mercy to anyone, except those who give mercy to others –  The Islamic Hadith
  • Sweet mercy is nobility’s true badge – William Shakespeare
  • Teach me to feel another’s woe; to hide the fault I see; that mercy I to others show; that mercy show to me – Alexander Pope

Something that has always baffled and confused me till to this day is seeing some supposed to be ‘decent nice good people’ and that are also ‘following and observing’ having the meanest cruel envious jealous hearts that you ever saw – and making that the opposite drinking smoking etc. character as honorable and more astute and more considerate and charitable.

Bad 2

bad 3

Images Bad – For Demontration Purposes Only!

It all looks like a drama and role acting play – and that as if that person has been given – or chosen for himself a role – even starring one – that he or she is least suited for! It looks at best a bravado too – if not a façade and staged act, play and drama. The hypocrisy and double standards are really devastating – and killing too!

In my career life and others, I have seen people that are really high positions feeling jealous and envious of fast rising high potential staff that they have even developed sinister evil plans to curtail and or dampen their growth – because of the fear element – or just plain envy and jealousy that it took them a lot of efforts and time to pass through the phases – unalike the competition that is moving fast upwards and vertically!

bad 4

I had bosses that even if need and desperation I would prefer to be without – because I know well in advance what their reactions and answers will be. Forget the staff under me – or those I am responsible and looking after. If I go to one particular Department boss for an issue of the staff under him – I know well the refusal and the negativity – simply because he does not like that person – and to ‘fix him’ in showing him his authority and power – even if you throw him the book – and point out that it is allowable – he will create an artificial not true situation in retort – saying to you – our Department now is at critical ‘this stage’ level – and we simply cannot allow anyone  – for example compassionate emergency leave now! A few days later another staff whom he likes – and does ‘not need fixing’ can be allowed by the same boss to proceed – because I know him and his family – and he deserves the break – whilst the other one is left trying hard to cope with the denial – and continuing doing his job at the same time!

The same can be done to the contractor, customer and client! One gets ‘no never’ – whilst the other ‘possibly yes’ and even direct yes! For the same situation, condition and request! What is this that we do not fear God anymore? That as supposed to be believers we are simply not afraid of ‘what goes around; comes around’? The punishment on earth before they bury you? The punishment of the grave? The day of Judgement? Or reincarnation?

And the worst part I personally feel is when it extends to family and family versus relatives relationships and associations – you side with one – against the other! We defend those that are not defendable – and attack those that are defendable – and have reason and justification – but we simply deny them – because our evil hearts and minds dictate to us that we should do so – and damn the rest in injustices and unfairness – lack of ethics, principles, justice and professionalism!

Bad 6

Images Bad – For Demontration Purposes Only!

And if someone pokes his fingers into your eyes – don’t squirm and turn! Be quiet – let him do it – because he is the boss – or he is in a position and authority to do so! I had narrated this case when one friend had visited him in my office – and talking to him nicely – when this boss of mine – a fellow local – comes in ‘shouting and screaming’ loud in the corridors for the whole world to hear! Everyone – including visitors in the reception – were looking at me as if fish out of water – and I kept praying quietly under the breathe to avoid making more drama and spectatle!

Bad 1

Images Bad – For Demontration Purposes Only!

He was still puffing and cursing in his office when I went in – closed the door behind me – looked him straight in the face and told him that ‘this is your final and last time’ that you will do this to me ever again! You have issues with me – justified or not – on my works and or otherwise – please call me to your office – and let us discuss rationally – professionally and ethically – and we will then try best to sort out the issues and amicably. When my temporary contract came for renewal – he declined to do so! He was not used at people getting back to him – and making a stand to him!

Sometimes if you see how some high profile places are run – it will shock you to the core – and your very foundations!

BOOK REVIEW

A heartfelt, enthusiastic series of instructions and warnings about road safety.

Al Suleimany, a columnist for the Oman Daily Observer, observes that the Sultanate of Oman has one of the highest motorist casualty rates in the world, and he sets out in this book (not actually a novel, but rather a collection of dramatic real-life incidents) to raise Omani awareness of the causes—and results—of carelessness on the country’s roadways.

The book shows endorsements by HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said (who, like many Omanis, has himself been involved in accidents prevention campaigns), including the Omani Grand Mufti and the Royal Omani Police.

Al Suleimany stresses that the dangers involved are communal: “There can be no Omani in the Sultanate who has not been touched closely by a road death and yet we see dangerous driving every time we travel the roads.” As a newspaperman, Al Suleimany highlights printed accident reports: “Every day we see also in the newspapers about road casualty figures in the newspapers—but as usual in the coming story we never imagine or visualize that it could be someone we know well or related to.”

The work shows examples of motorists making bad or careless choices (it’s also full of accident photos and emotional reminders of the loved ones left behind when a driver dies or kills someone). The author points out several underlying causes of all this tragedy: Oman as a culture is new to driving; it has been “thrust into the 21st century in a matter of a few decades”; and Oman has newly prosperous youth who prize fast cars over safety. The author attempts to prevent new-driver heedlessness by underscoring the personal tragedies that can result from reckless driving. Al Suleimany issues stern warnings about the

high cost of irresponsibility, and although a good deal of the book is Oman-specific, many of those warnings have global applications.

A detailed, compassionate call for greater motorist responsibility in Oman.

Pride and Prejudice!

Or My Poor ‘African Cousin’!

  • The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong - Mahatma Gandhi
  • Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them!Bruce Lee

A Introduction

According to Wikipedia, Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London. “Pride and Prejudice is also about that thing that all great novels consider – the search for self.

One day Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi stole a little money from his father’s pocket. He trembled to pick his father’s pocket. But he realized it was a great crime. This realization did not allow him to rest in peace. He became restless. His conscience pricked him. It was too much to bear. So, he decided that he should never steal anything from anybody under any circumstances. He did not stop at that.

Pride-Prejudice

Image Pride and Prejudice.

He wrote a letter of confession admitting his mistake and swore that he would never resort to stealing. But he was not bold enough to give the letter to his father. So, he put it in his pocket secretly. The father was so much moved by the confession that he instantly forgave self-correction, Gandhi became Mahatma Gandhi. So, let us learn to admit the mistakes done by us knowingly or unknowingly, and also to try not to commit the same mistake in our life time.

B The Story

I do not know about you but in my life’s time I have done some real big mistakes and errors in judgement in my life – but nothing is compared to when one is a young child and as a teenager. Some mistakes we may have regretted immediately afterwards – and others it took us a long time to admit – after fighting our own guilt and conscience – and we regret to the end of our lives even! I read this Snoopy character cartoon of ‘Make one mistake – and you will regret for the rest of your life!

African Woman 1

People like us from parents and grandparents that went to Africa cannot discount or deny the links to that distant land – even in family and relatives connections. Our parents and (great) grandparents went to Africa in dhows – and many decided to settle there after the dark part of our history in autocracy and persecution – and supported by those that preached freedom and democracy in more as rhetoric and falsehood than in reality – so long as ‘their interests’ are served – they do not care or feel for anybody else. It is only when there is ‘threat and or infringement’ that they dare to step in to ‘preserve and protect’ their own interests and well being only!

African Woman 2

I had one of my late Uncles who spoke fluent Swahili – but he was embarrassed and feeling shameful that he did – and had even been to Africa – and that even one of his own sons had married a local girl – and got children too – his grandchildren. Of course he was more attuned to his children that were more near his own choices of in arranged marriages than the rebel prodigical son! I found this irony very much disturbing and upsetting – because it looked to me like that ostrich with head in the ground approach of life’s aspects.

He is not alone – there are many others just like him – in that you look the other way – and expect the whole world in this internet global age to do the same! As Obama had said – Those days are long gone! We need to wake up to the realization and truth only. That is why I always say – in Oman we have a great thing going – and to do the right correct ethical and right thing – even if eventually and belatedly sometimes! Now having preached and in rhetoric practice – I need to admit this part of my life’s history. In talking about myself – hopefully others will learn too – and some hopefully may even copy and emulate in the process!

African Woman 3

Image – African Women

As a young boy of about 8 years old – our late grandfather direct from Manah – had married a local girl there in that distant land. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder – and there is no colour, race, creed, nationality or ethnicity in love – truthfully and honestly speaking here! So whether we like it or not – we are related directly to the offsprings – even if they may look differently to us! Our father at the time was very rich and powerful – and he had the colonial District Commissioner as ‘his personal friend and protector’. I said about all these things before!

As you can guess – coming from a rich family – and you had just to say it – and your wish was given to you! I remembered when my late father had asked me – if I wanted anything gift in particular – and I told him that I wanted a horse! I meant a real live horse – but the poor man gave us a riding horse alright – but made of steel – and wheels! So being pampered and getting whatever we wanted as kids – our heads were in the clouds – spoilt and pompous – and looking down on other kids lesser fortunate than us. Including this poor girl from the family too! It was Eid day and the whole family had met in our late father’s rich house – and there were all of us there – including invited guests from outside!

So this poor girl wanted to ride my bicycle – and selfish me did not allow her to do so! But I allowed others – and that was the worst mean part of me – in prejudices! Pride and prejudice! She is one year older than me! We made amends few years ago – when I kneeled down and apologised to her what I did to her as a young boy.

Please pray for her too – because she needs your prayers too! Because she is very sick – and the message came in last Wednesday. She had insisted that I be informed – and I pray for her! And she …. has forgiven me – because she did instead ride the truck – that I bought for her husband’s business far later in life!

What more can I say? Take Care!

Pressures On Children To Excel!

Recently in the local news was an incident of a young Indian boy who it is alleged that had ‘forged his own kidnapping’ because he was scared stiff of his father and ‘how he would fare’ in his coming examinations! Frankly, it comes all out of watching too much television! Before we start on the topic – let us have some quotes about the children in general!

v In one Islamic tradition – our Great Prophet Muhammad – peace be upon him – ran after his grandson Hussein in a game until he caught him.

v He used to let his granddaughter Umamah sit on his shoulders while he was praying.

v When Prophet Muhammad PBUH was chided for kissing his grandchild, he responded to them – What can I do if God has deprived your heart of all human feelings?

v Prophet Muhammad SAW has been described as being very fond of children in general.

v Once, Prophet Muhammad – peace be upon him – was sitting with a child in his lap, and the child urinated over him Embarrassed, the father scolded the child.

v The Great Prophet pbuh restrained the father, and advised him: This is not a big issue. My clothes can be washed. But be careful with how you treat the child. What can restore his self-esteem after you have dealt with him in public like this?

v If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.- Albert Einstein

v Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive themOscar Wilde

v If we wish to create a lasting peace, we must begin with the childrenMahatma Ghandi

v I have a dream that my children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their characterMartin Luther King.

v Children must be taught how to think, not what to thinkMargaret Mead

v Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring and integrity, they think of you! – H. Jackson Brown Jnr.

Take it from me with my 6 brothers’ and 8 sisters’ children – over a football team Masha Allah – and grandchildren with some of them – and the ‘extended family’ that has all ‘other nationalities on board ship’ – just like Noah’s Ark – including some in Indian, Pakistani, Thai, Canadians, USA, UK, Africans, Yemenis – etc! I have no whims to share with you – if I may! I have written so many columns about children in my columns (and books) stretching over 10 years now!

A long time ago – when I visited that distant land – I met this young Professor in the University there. As we continued chatting – I realised that his father was my classmate in College there. So I asked about his father? He took me to this very ailing sick forlorn old man – who actually was my own age!

As we sat chatting and eating the local food of ugali (wheat flour), maharagwe (beans) and dried fish coconut curry – he recalled to me the incident of his son when they had a ‘very big argument’ – as he put it – because his son wanted to do Arts subject – instead of science topics – so possibly he could end as a doctor or as an Engineer (if you like Engineer jokes – with due to respects to my youngest daughter here – search for The Knack in the Internet! It is worth a smile – or ‘dry humour’ – if you will!

He said to me – I had just caught my son about to jump from the 5th floor of the flat building we were staying in company accommodation. My son had tied a big rock round his neck – so the fall could be faster. If I had delayed one minute – there would not be this son professor in front of your eyes today! So I consoled him – because he could not stop crying – even then! The son was now a Professor – and a highly acclaimed one – and happy that his choice of career and life aspects went the way he wanted them to be!

Students A

This reminded me of my own case as a young boy when I was going to Secondary School and my choice of Arts subjects. Fortunately or unfortunately – our parents were not that highly educated and I had to make this delicate critical decision mostly on my own! At that time we used to have what was called as Arithmetic – before it became Mathematics – and I hated ‘figure works’ – as it was a compulsory subject for the science stream!

Students 3

Images Students – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

My father wanted for me? To become a doctor! Unfortunately we did not have even a nurse in the children – but only later with nurses – in the grandchildren! Yes there is now a lady doctor too – in the ‘extended family’ – but she is not even Omani – but Indian! But that is another story for now! So those people that tell you I am anti-Indian etc – ask them to see their shrink first! Guess what the old man would think if he knew his son is a writer instead! Sending him faster to the grave! But he died long time before even going into business!

When my son was in Secondary school he wanted to throw a party – because he had passed his exams! But there was resistance – because the first question even the Invitees would ask is – how much averages did you score? Typical Omani style questioning – even if you have later A Doctorate – because usually the people that ask the question – are themselves secondary school finalists! So Madam Wife put her foot down – ‘you got the guts to invite people with this mark? Yes my son retorted – because see any mark after mine to 90% averages – no one gets college or University – so what is the difference here? So I said son – we will all mutiny – and throw the party! My son had never forgotten to this day! Today my son earns more than twice her mother makes as an executive secretary – tongue in cheek speaking!

Images Students – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

When I read the magazines nowadays, I find many cases – especially with due respects – of expatriate families ‘excel pressures’ on their children – and including ‘peer pressures’ too! The feelings are genuine and sincere as parents want best for their children always – but sometimes – or many times – the children think differently – and have their own likes and prioraties!

Today my daughter is an Engineer – though if you ask me frankly I would think she could make a very good Human Resources Manager – because unalike me she is very enduring and patient with people – and a good study of character and personality than ever I can claim to be – especially now less patient with being diabetic and eyes sick! Small things makes me explode now!

School Kids Diversity

Images Students – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Frankly, in my mind – there is nothing like talking to each other and trying to accommodate and reach compromises – and meeting of the minds. Rather than draconian and authoritative aggressive approaches that can just turn a bad situation even worse – and uncontrollable and irreversible!

Allah God Guide us the Right Path and Way – Amin Amen. Take Care!

Book with stories of accident victims pitches for Road

Safety!

Majid al Suleimany

Muscat Dailt – March 18, 2013

Muscat -

It is arguably the first time in the country that several heart-wrenching real life stories of road accident victims have been put together in a book to tackle road safety issues and educate people on the consequences of reckless driving.

A retired human resources consultant, Majid al Suleimany has collected more than 60 real life stories of road accident victims and their families for the 450-page book Being the Safe Driver.
Published in the US, the book looks at the rising number of road accidents and also provides technical advice from experts. “With PDO’s help I was able get and narrate several accidents with a detailed view on what caused the accidents. The book has views from a number of HSE (health, safety and environment) experts on how to be a safe driver. And I have also quoted verses from the Q’uran to show that putting other people’s lives in danger for no apparent reason is not acceptable in Islam,” said Suleimany.

He said this makes Being the Safe Driver a good handbook. “We don’t look at the accidents from an emotional level. We only see statistics in newspapers and news clipping about one more accidents. The day we start associating with it emotionally and putting faces to victims, we will be more responsible on roads.” To take a closer look and see the consequences in person, the author visited hospitals and was distraught to see people maimed for life. “It was so emotional to see children and adults with broken limbs and burnt bodies. There were so many young boys with debilitating injuries – who otherwise should have been looking at their future – languishing in hospital wards.”

He said there should be a programme to show the public what consequences the victims and their families are facing. “It could be either through documentaries or planned hospital tours.”

Suleimany is already in talks with a couple of people who could translate the book into Arabic. “The plan is to go to schools and give them a presentation on road safety and leave some books in their library.”

This is Suleimany’s sixth book, and he is expecting to launch another two very soon.

“I plan to do an official launch of Being the Safe Driver and my other two upcoming books sometime in April. This would be the first time that an Omani author is releasing three books at a time,” he said

Increasing Alcohol Abuse!

v O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, idolatry, and diving arrows are an abomination of Satan’s handiwork. So avoid that so that you may be successful – The Holy Quran 5: 90

v Alcohol maybe man’s worst enemy! – Frank Sinatra

v I don’t even drink! I can’t stand the taste of alcohol! – Kim Kardashian

v Alcohol gives you infinite patience for stupidity – Sammy Davis Jnr.

v Herb is the healing of a nation; alcohol is the destruction! – Bob Marley

v Alcohol is the anesthia by which we endure the operation of life – George Bernard Shaw.

Frankly and truthfully speaking, I have written on this very same topic a few times before! The last time I wrote on this – a few years ago – a very irate and upset relative of the family called me to start an abusive from the start discussion about my writings – and saying to me that he will be very blunt – because maybe the world does not know it – but he knows it for sure that an Indian guy working for this newspaper – was writing for me – and paying him on the sideline! He said to me – you can fool everyone – but not me! I know exactly about you. All things you think we do not know about you!

The call was placed to me at 2 a.m. in those days when people still used land phone lines! And Madam Wife MW was worried because I was ‘at my best behaviour’ and just listening without saying anything – especially to the loud voices and shouts at the other end – after calling some minutes later – to ‘give me a piece of his mind – once more!’. Anyway – I told MW that it was a certain WRTXY – and certainly at that time he was not sober – and one could easily tell from the hoarse husky gruff voice at the other end. I do not know what hand signals he was also placing – as he was talking to me – but one does not need high imagination to fathom out what they could be!

Next day, at around noon he came to my Office – and I was just about to press the emergency link button to Security – when he started crying in the Office in very loud voices – now that he was sober – and asking for ‘my help to save him’ – and if I knew Alcoholics Anonymous contact – but I referred him to a fellow Omani peer who likes his drinks – and the one that easily became ‘high flying potential’ to succeed over a lot of the rest of us that went without and observing – because we had not caught on – and were ‘not modern’!

When I was studying in UK in the 1970s, my peers foreign students friends used to use me as their chauffeur to take them from the pubs – until that day when I put my foot down – when two of them dirtied my car. There was there one pretty tall local girl that really took a fancy to me – remember I was still young and not married then – but when she found out that I was not ‘drinking even socially’ – as she kindly put it – that was too much for her! And the pretty thing slipped through my fingers!

For a long time I was fighting with the devil whether to entertain her or not – until then when I remembered and came to my senses – as the East Africans say – The one who denies you beans – is just reducing you from getting gas! – And frankly not a lost grapes saga!

Drunk 1

In one of the new FDI companies, I was in a very good position and status as their HR man in Oman. Until the day when the top guys from their home came to the launch – and found out that my white wine glass was actually a soft drink beverage! One of them was drawn to the bubbles in the glass – because as I understand it – the white wine does not cause bubbles?

He said to me – I am confused! I thought you were 3 years in UK? Explain to me! So I did! And that also happened in a Management course abroad – a few years before I retired – because the good final farewell party Organiser said to me – All you people (you people?) coming from (our region) drink heavily – why are you a fish out of water – from the famous expression – drink like a fish! Sic!

It is very sad to see the outlook and approach of life that some of our youngsters have adopted and taken that ‘it is okay – that you can drink a little – ‘just to socialise’ escapades – but they forget that it is how all the things start – before you start making a fool and nuisance of yourself – and cause strife and havoc in your married and family life. Sad when even the lassies do it too – because I can tell you – honestly and frankly – whether you believe me or not – that even those that like their drinks want a spouse and life partner that does not drink! HEALTH Alcohol 074058

Drinkin Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!

I have seen it real life experiences – both local and foreign – where marriages – even amongst the elders – supposed to be more patient and waiting in dreams for changes – have broken up – because of the stuff! Because that is the root cause of domestic violence! The people that suffer the most – and hopefully will not join in the future – copy and emulate – are the children teenagers only!

Trust me – I am a great believer in ‘live and let live’ syndromes and approaches – because I could go to a pub and have my meal – and if you leave me alone to have nowadays my fresh juice also – and you have whatever you want – but don’t impose your rules and values to me – and I will not impose mine to you! If you say to me things like ‘a lot of you people (you people?) drink a lot – when you have only have few examples in reality to give – then we have problems ahead – between us – as I had said in my books too!

One long time ago – in a great party – one of the top local guys that just could not stand me – told me ‘why he hated me to the core’. Next day sober (hopefully!) he said to me – I hope I was not a nuisance yesterday? I said – sarcastically – more to myself – No Sir! You were okay! Why give him the advantage – and an ace card?

Blaming Others In Life!

  • A man can fail many times, but he isn’t a failure until he begins to blame somebody elseJohn Burroughs
  • In Life’s decisions, it is always your fault, because if you wanted to change, you’re the one who has got to change – Katharine Hepburn
  • Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility and for the future – John F. Kennedy
  • When you blame others, you give up your power to change – Robert Anthony

Since the essence of time, people have always blamed others for their own mistakes and errors in judgment and in decision making! We may blame our parents – our upbringing – our families, relatives and friends – and the environment and society as a whole of our current troubles, problems and predicaments. We do not accept our own roles and responsibilities – but must always find scapegoats and excuses.

Blame 1

We may a thing has going bad for a very long time – but we do not come in to rectify and save the situation – until things have gone very wrong – and we go in for quick and fast fixes – instead of looking deep in self analysis and deep soul search of why things went wrong – or of the status quo!

During history, people have even ‘killed the messenger of bad news’ – as if in doing so – the problems will just evaporate and disappear in front of our own eyes! That is why the ‘cheapest slave’ is selected to send in the bad news! It is true that it is very easy and convenient to sit at the pedestal and preach – whilst we ourselves are not perfect – and do the very same things that our preaching is against! That is human beings for you!

Blame 2

The Nazis blamed the Jews for the economy down turn in pre World War 2 Germany. In the end, 6 million Jews were massacred in cold blood by Hitler and his Nazi thugs. In Yugoslavia they blamed the Muslims – and some of them did not know even that they were Muslims in Communist times – because they were not practising – drank alcohol and ate pork in abundance – only their supposed to be Muslim names differianted them from the rest.

Iddi Amin – The ex Ugandan Dictator – blamed the Asians for the economic status quo of Uganda then! He said he had ‘a dream from God’ – to expel and chuck out the Asians from Uganda. During a famous demonstration – he took a certificate of citizenship of one Asian named Patel – and tore it into pieces – declaring in front of a great cheering crowd – There Mr. Patel – you are no longer a citizen of Uganda – and end of ‘Paper Citizens’ per se! So did Saddam Hussein who shot Traders because ‘they were raising prices’ during the embargo boycott times. These are all facts of history – recorded and preserved – and nothing new or invented!

Blame 3

Image – Blame! For Demonstration Purposes Only!

On an individual level – I must admit that my own weaknesses and kindnesses led to the eventual downfall of my own business in Consultancy! Because I wanted to employ as many unemployed youth as I could that came knocking at our doors – or were being referred to us.

When business was very good at the start of the business – we never sat and thought of what things would be in when there was no more business – or the support and assistance – financial and otherwise – started to be withdrawn. Or us refusing to be unprofessional, unethical and unprincipled – by taking acceptances to short cuts – and doing things all wrong and crooked – so ‘just to survive’ – as the twisted crooked sayings go!

Blame 4

The same thing can be said of my career life. I should have been more hard hearted stone hearted and do just as I was told – and like that mercenary soldier told to shoot – and not only shoots – but even throw in a grenade in the process. Or when told to jump – not to ask and challenge – but revert to how high do you want me to jump! Be a better team player – The us and them syndrome – at least we are in control of the situation – and they will do our bidding! So like what Bush said – You are either with us – or with them! Not stupid unwise me saying – I am with the third option – not with them – nor with you – but more with myself and my own outlooks, focuses and conscience only!

You will forgive me too. With all that has happened to me and being also that sickish and oldish – I have become ‘egg shell’ – and case (top) sensitive! Imagine arguing and fighting with a bed-ridden ailing and invalid relative – because he was lamenting on his current status – and ‘blaming the whole world’ – including us the family members – but as if he was innocent and perfect. I admit I may have many faults and issues – but one thing I am not for sure.

Blame A

Even in my major operation in Royal Hospital and being in a serious diabetic attack a few years ago – that even the foreign Arab Doctor was teasing me – do you have iron veins? Because in your state – you should be in a coma, paralysed or even dead! Yet I was smiling and cheerful! I blamed no one – except myself for putting my life and health in extreme risks – because I was still crying and lamenting on my lost consultancy business – and my lost personal and family status! Whatever the case – I would never dare to speak a harsh and cruel cutting word – to a doctor – and even a visitor – and more if he is family and relative – and had come in with good sincere faith to see me!

Our late Father used to tell us – Nobody kisses your hand – unless you are rich and powerful – or it is spiked with honey. And if you see a poor man’s hand being kissed – most likely it is the later – or in most probabilities – it is either the son or daughter related of that poor man!

Next time you want to blame others for your decisions and mistakes in life – Just Don’t! Take Care!

Between Us Only!

Being Good In Life!

  • You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty! – Ghandi.
  • Wait down for the person going up the ladder! East African Saying
  • We never know what is waiting for us in our futures. Sometimes you may wish for a quick end death – but it still is not coming! As Above!

A long time agowhen our late Father was still alive – he used to advise us – If you are in a dhow (ship) – and all around you – including the captain and crew – are one eyed – then close one eye! Do not show that you can see with both eyes! Because with the guys inborn envious streaks and jealousies – and their eagerness to put you in your place – they may make you lose both eyes! Because different groups of them will be after you – and they may have lost which eye they had left! Sound advice!

Being Good 1

Fight Between Good and Bad!

I do not know about you – but it is my contention and feeling that today in life the more good and humane things you do – the more you get hurt and pained in life! You become the victim of your own making and circumstances! Have you noticed that those that had made it – or doing well in life – are mean, dastardly and cruel? They have no remembrances or recall of any favours or good things that you have or might have done for them – or those near them? They easily and conveniently forget – because they can – and are in position to do so!

If you go to some of the places – and see great cars parked outside – be precautioned and be warned! You do not know who the owner or tenant of that house really is! You may be shocked and awed! Unless you have a real need or requirement to go in – don’t! Be especially careful of those just coming into money – or suddenly making big money! They are meanly and dastardly changed people – not what you knew them to be before! They have their heads in the clouds – and riding high horses!

You will forgive me for generalising – but I have seen it real in life – with even family, friends and acquaintances! From the same peoples that once were in glee and rejoicing of owning a small Korean or Japanese car! Now there are top of the ranges – top luxury and fast cars parked outside!

Being Good 3

Image – Being Good!

I have been to one house – and stupid me thinking that he will remember the favours I did to him personally before – which could have been even instrumental of where he is now! I ended not only disappointed and frustrated – but insulted in the process – and walked out like that dog with its tail stuck into its behind! I will not forget this to the end of my life!

So do not expect that if you do anything kind and nice to others – people will remember! They have short memories! The East Africans say – Do your good deed – and continue on your journey! Do not wait for favours being returned or remembered – otherwise you will never make that journey!

Being Good 2

So my question is this! If you do good and nice things to people – and they easily forget and do not remember – is the situation the same if instead you do bad and evil things? No – in many cases than one – you will be the hero! See how real good nice faithful wives fare? The husband is fooling around! So is the reverse of the case with husbands too! Yet they are seen as great – and heroes! The dull, dumb and stupid ones are those that want to be nice – and remain good! Life’s foibles – twists and turns – the worst in humanity – the decay – the decadence – and the malaise in life!

In one of the many companies that I worked – I had one girl assistant – who at least to me looked nice and decent – and we got along fine – boss and assistant! Years later, I came to realise that this girl – who was friendly and popular in the office – was shunned and casted away by her family and relatives – because God forgive her sins where she is now – because she was very mean, cruel and hard on her own family!

Even when she was very sick and invalid – on her death bed – few or almost none of them visited her – with exception of course of office friends that did not know the real person outside office – the Dr. Jackyl and Mr. Hyde dramas! There was even a great dispute of which house for her dead body was to be taken to – because even in death the despise, hatred and animosity did not decline! The only few people that were crying were her office friends – but hardly any or almost none of the direct family and relatives!

People outside that did not know the real facts and the truth just liked to accuse and criticise the family – with yours truly on board! For me yet – it was a great shocker – because I had prided myself as a good study of character and personality – but I got it all wrong! Perhaps because I was blinded by her being a great fan and reader of my works!

Next time you plan to do a good and kind deed – do it and continue on your journey! But if you are yearning to be famous and a hero – you know what you must do now! It has been known to work – to a considerable success!

Allah Protect and Preserve us all – Amin!

The Morning Drive! Reply

For Sunday March 3rd 2013

Between Us Only!

The Morning Drive!

Due to the exorbitant and difficult phase in my life a few years ago, I lost my Dodge Durango because I could no longer afford to pay the installments. I was left with my old Toyota Camry – that luckily had already been paid off in full. Though quite old now – it does take care of my family and I – because in turn we did look after it! That is the way of life – if you care and take care of someone – it is bound to be reciprocated – even if it does not show itself openly – and even in some rare cases – belatedly!

I have been behaving just like a hermit lately! Frankly, the mere idea of getting out and about used to make my glucose count rise up rapidly – and sweat all over! I guess that is not good for one who is diabetic – and has also eyes problems – especially the left one – with diminishing vision.

So I had decided long time ago not to continue confronting Madam for the remaining car – though logic would have been that it is she that still wants to work after retirement. I remember the joke of one official being called Mugabe – because he still wanted to work long after retirement. You might well ask me why I myself am not interested to continue to work – even if temporary or project work?

Toyota Camry

Toyota Camry

You see – I have already written 2 books in Arab Management expounding and exposing my experiences and exposures of yet still a much needed – you would think – National Human Resources Expert, Advisor and Consultant – with over 38 years of experiences! But I am just too tired to write a third book yet on the same subject – though admittedly I have more material for two more books if I wanted – especially now post Arab Spring uprisings!

So my good Indian friend trying to fix me something – poor guy he really tries hard – was shocked I was not interested for another temporary stint – when he told me who the boss and head of the project was. I can assure you that it has got nothing to do with him being junior in age – and even experiences – with me. Or the fact that now he has a title to address before his first name!

But the mere fact that I knew him before – and with my last experiences with ‘one I thought I knew’ – to end in great disappointments and stress – I took a rain check – as our good friends the Americans like to say! He could not believe that I was turning down a good offer – which it was – but for me staying outside family – is not that important anymore! For me my family is now more important to me than anything else! I just need some pocket money to buy small things now and then – and by grace of God – at least I get that few mercies now – the bread crumbs – as some may say!

So on the day had decided with putting my foot down – and telling Madam – you want to work – work! No one is stopping you! Even if you come home dead tired – and the housemaid has made a coup and taken over the house – including looking after the boss! That is how things happen – because you put al your eggs in one basket! What is the point of extra money – if your health and well being is put at exposure and great risks – just for a few Baizas more?

So I drop Madam at the office – and go and see my caring and feeling good friend at his Office. He had come twice to visit me at home – and my turn to reciprocate! It is a long time since I have driven in town – luxury and no purpose – with exception of a few compulsory drives before! Though I wrote the book on Road Safety – Being The Safe Driver! – www.bethesafedriver.com – I had never visualised and realised how bad driving has been now! From my place to MBD – I had 5 near misses – just because of speed and just plain reckless and risky care free driving!

PP Native Cover.4097374.indd

At the offices – I see people moving about going to their offices – all silent and quiet – like robots – or a puppet on strings! As if given choices – they would still want the money – the privileges and the perks – but stay at home! There is this Indian lady talking to herself – or is it the blue tooth of her Mobile? I would not know! The Omani girls in the company mini bus – are hardly smiling – hardly audible their responses as I offer Religious greetings. I feel like stopping – and asking them – why so sad and gloomy? But then I remember – yes I said it all before!

I see these expatriates in big saloon cars – with suits and ties – even if it is getting hot already! I ask myself the question – looks like in a street in Mumbai – not in Oman? Where are the Omanis? Yes = there out too – few driving taxis and buses! And a few ones going to the Offices – but not that many! What is happening to us? Easily, conveniently and that fast already forgotten? Are these jobs Omanis cannot do – given the right counseling, mentoring, guidance and training? And changes in outlooks, focuses and in priorities. So many questions – but few answers!

I go to my friend’s Office. I look around. All expatriates – maybe from home town too! Yes a few Omani Officials too – and the usual clerks, admin and pro. Even the tea handler is Indian. Cannot an Omani do this job? Maybe it is a question of health and hygiene – or is it more of  uncompromising priorities? And the Secretaries – even if the talks and rhetoric are they are reserved for Omanis?

B - Psychology Book

The Two Arab Management Books

My friend is not there. Thank God – because he prides himself in being frank and blunt – and in putting the young ones down! We are not ready for serious talks – he brags – because the attitudes and focuses need to change! Perhaps it is a question more of missed opportunities – or only acting if the pressures are applied. I ask this young Omani Officer – how long did it take you to be an Officer – with all this crowd around you? He tells me – Uncle – keep writing about us! Do not give up! Do not be afraid! You are our voice out there!

I now reach home – dead tired, exasperated and disappointed. Scared and worried – all over again! I call Madam – I surrender! Please take the car! You know what? I will continue to stay now at home – at least for a bit longer! Please come and take the car! It is all yours – Madam!

Wipe My Tears!

It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart – Mahatma Ghandi

I do not know if you have noticed this? The truth is – every time that you watch the television news – or even documentaries – you will find always someone crying – so desperately and heartedly – and the tears just flow! No one is wiping the tears – and even the Interviewer does not stop for the person to compose himself – or wipe his or her tears! It is very sad, tragic and pathetic – to unbelievable levels!

Images – Tears!

We are supposed to be human beings from the word humane – but though we may kid ourselves that we do care and feel – the truth is far from the distance. It is all a sham – a façade – all crocodile tears! Nothing less – nothing more! Our hearts and souls have turned to solid stone!

We bow, kneel and pray to the Almighty – but it is all just routine mundane stuff – if just following customs blindly – but there is nothing of real value and esteem in it! Perhaps we are naïve to think that God does not see what is in our hearts – forget our fellow human beings!

The other day I had gone to visit my sick and ailing younger brother in hospital. We always complain of the smaller things in life – but we do not see the bigger picture – the real true picture. We may have many issues still to sort out – but where there is a meeting of the minds and a will determined to succeed – there will always be a way out of most things in life! That you can be sure of – in one way or the other!

It is a twist and turn of life – its foibles and out comings! Because here you decide to leave the country because you have decided to marry a foreign woman as your wife! Out of all the countries of the world – you choose a woman from a country that does not allow foreigners to own land or property. A place that you will pay heavily for your medical – even with medical insurance taken – simply because you are a foreigner! And that is one way of making quick money out of you! Especially when you are sick – and have to be hospitalised!

My younger brother – but he looks far more older than the rest of us all! Sicker also! He was complaining that he did not have water for the last 27 days – not even allowed to sip water! Thanks to those in our leadership – he was finally brought back home – after the family spending heavily on his medical treatment!

Yet we still moan and complain on the small trifle things in life – never happy – nor satisfied! We want more – give us! On seeing me – my brother was crying – and there were no tissues left in the box – seems he was crying all the time! So I gave him my clean tissues which I always carry with me! So I said to him – Let me wipe your tears! Welcome back home – my brother! A second time? Or was it a third time? I forget – important is that you are back home now!

I watch the television news. The refugee woman from Eritrea – and others from Darfur – she is crying – uncontrollably – nonstop! The tears drain down her face. The interviewer does not stop – at least to allow her to wipe her tears! Or compose herself first – before continuing! I wish I was there – because I would wipe her tears – or give her my clean tissues (and handkerchief!) with me! I would also want to ask her – What did you expect Madam?

These people have mistreated the ‘original owners’ of the land – what did you expect as a refugee – and an ‘illegal’ one too that entered the country through the back door! Did you not have freedom at home – even if hungry? Here you have no freedom and still hungry – and disgraced too on top! She was crying – My husband has been imprisoned – and my children are without! Perhaps she did not see in television so many tears and sad faces of the once who owned the land and property! They are in the land – yet crying too!

That is before other human beings from faraway places decided to move them out – to make space for their guilt of allowing the holocaust to take place – and over 6 million fellow human beings butchered and slaughtered in cold blood! Yet from the same people that are now making others cry – and wanting to preserve our ethnicity and originality imposed on others! How sad, tragic and pathetic human beings have become! Yet God still is graceful and patient – hearing his name being called in vain!

Then there is man in Mali. His hand had been chopped off – because he was suspected of stealing bread! Bread for my limb? By people determined to be more religious and observing to him – and he needed to be given a lesson! Then ‘non-believers of his sort’ come in – and the man is celebrating – to see the more observing ones being chased out to the mountains and valleys!

The woman is crying! Her husband has been killed in jail – because he threw stones at the occupiers! What if he was armed with a gun? What would his punishment have been? Even if you are in my house – my land? The East Africans say – Let him pass – the one with mightier strength! It is not a question of rights and ethics – it is just how strong you are – and where you derive your support from! The stronger the support – the more aggressive and bully you can be! Forget the rest!

Have you ever imagined this? The child is asking the mother – Why are those planes bombing us, Mummy? Are they enemy planes over our land? What does the Mother do in reply? Poor woman – she just cries! And it is the young child that now calms the mother – more braver and courageous now – Do not cry Mother! God will make those planes go away!

Because of the economy – no job – no takers! The one who lost her home? Her husband committed suicide in shame! She too is crying! Then the suicide bomber who believes he is on his way to heaven! He murders fellow believers – because he is more right and more perfect compared to others that have deviated – and need to be given a lesson of life for the deviation!

It is always the poor needy and desperate peoples that are used to kill fellow human beings that are also poor and needy like him! Puppets over a string! Those behind the scene – the schemers and the plotters – no one sees them – except of course God – and the punishment on earth – the punishment of the grave – and eternal fire and damnation!

Please wipe my tears! Take Care!

Psychology of Arab Management Thinking!

Majid Al Suleimany presents new study in Arab

Management Thinking!

‘Psychology of Arab Management Thinking’ offers firsthand look into Middle Eastern thinking

MUSCAT, Oman – In his new book “Psychology of Arab Management Thinking: Arabian Management Series” (published by Trafford Publishing), author and analyst Majid Al Suleimany explores the management styles that he believes helped lead to the events of Arab Spring.

“This is a no-punch-held-back book,” Al Suleimany says. “It critically reviews and assesses with deep soul searching analysis the management styles and approaches of the Arab world, especially in Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) vis-à-vis the international companies operating in the international arena.”

2 - Psychology Front Cover

An excerpt from “Psychology of Arab Management Thinking”:

“As Arabs work is worshipped in our Religion – so what went wrong here? Especially in Management circles? Why are we behind the rest of the world, despite all our riches, potentials and resources?

This is a no punch held back, no barrels held, no stiff, no frills play – but to be as blunt, frank, open, honest and sincere as far as possible – so the book can be a learning experience and process for this generation – and future to come – especially after the recent Arab Spring uprisings!”

Al Suleimany knows his book fills a critical need. “Little is known of Arab management styles,” he says, “especially as written from the inside by an Arab himself as an experienced professional local HR and management expert, advisor and counselor.”

Preaching 1

Please Stop Preaching! Reply

Between Us Only!

Please Stop Preaching!

With due respects – there is a growing trend of some people from all sources starting to lecture the Youth about jobs and their availabilities – and vis-à-vis now and the future! Even from high profiles circles too! This trend needs to be nipped in the bud – before it starts to grow its tentacles! We should be serious – and for the first time in our lives come to our senses – and realise what we are dealing with – and what are the stakes? The options – the choices – the outlooks – and the focuses!

Preaching 2

Image Preaching For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Let us all be serious and realise what we are dealing with now! Those days of sitting on the sidelines with useless and unnecessary idle talk and comment are no longer with us – nor are needed or necessary! We all know one day we are all going to die – but why should you go around telling people that you know? One day you will die! It is not looking at things the simplistic and casual ways as some would like – but there is an expression that if you see a kindle fire burning – you simply do not go stirring it up in any way for that matter!

The time to tell the Youth things like ‘Jobs are not birthrights’ – ‘Jobs are not a guarantee’ – ‘Because you are an Omani you must be employed?’ etc are unneeded, premature, unnecessary and uncalled for. Metaphorically – it is like handing over a loaded pistol to your adversary – and hope he will not use it – like swiping you with the butt – or even shoot at you!

Because we have over 35% of the population as expatriates still in the country! Even if you compare the youth looking for jobs – they do not in any way reach these proportions! Then how and why say these things now? If there are no longer expatriates – perhaps – but even then – is there a need to say it? Besides, the focus and the tone is very patronising, ridiculing and condescending – as if we were not youth before – and too looking for jobs for the first time! And the main point – they are knowing and intelligent – far more than what we credit them for!

Preaching 3

Image Preaching For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Remember you have youngsters at home too – your own children – or brothers and sisters! Try to lecture and preach to them and see the reactions! Even if the intention is sincere, genuine and well placed too! Sometimes, you need to talk them as equals for them to pay attention to you! And this after several trysts, attempts and pursuits. If you start lecturing and preaching you not only switch them off – but just alienate them in the process!

Frankly and honestly – it is not for looking for scoring points or popularity contests. Nor in ridiculing and or belittling anyone in anyway. We must all be serious and think carefully – before we say – or write things in these regards and aspects. Or go down preaching – from our high horses!

Preaching 1

Image Preaching For Demonstration Purposes Only!

One thing we must not discount or disregard. Indeed, there are some rogue elements here that are quick and ready to grab these kinds of information for their own ulterior selfish motives – their innuendos and hidden agendas! This is the kind of information that they are looking for – to continue to pin down the youth – and make them get excuses to continue not to take them in – or even make their lives hard and difficult so they may be forced to leave!

If you think I am exaggerating or blowing things out of proportions – read my Arab Management books! Based on true life’s experiences and exposures! If it can happen to us so-called professionals – qualified and experienced – and even seniors – for sure it can happen to the youngsters too! I am not joking – I am dead serious.

Sadly and tragically – it is not the few expatriates’ schemers and Mafias alone that are involved – but even from our own – including The Old Guards – those that want no changes – and those determined the keep us down – especially the youth – and including acknowledged some businesses enterprises – many family owned! Even the SMEs after quick and early profits have joined the band wagons too!

Please forgive me – for also preaching too today! I know – I should take my own medicine – first and foremost!

Take Care!

Goodbye; Reader’s Digest!

Back to normal issues again – simply because this head needs time to recuperate from banging it against brick unmovable solid walls! Besides – like I always say too – what is the use when people just continue to ignore, sideline and marginalise you – hoping that you may just evaporate and disappear from near them and view! Anyway….!

Introduction – Reader’s Digest is a bestselling monthly American general interest family magazine – and that was founded in 1922. Global editions of Reader’s Digest reach an additional 40 million people in more than 70 countries – with 49 editions in 21 languages. It has a global circulation of 10.5 million – making it the largest paid circulation magazine in the world. It is also published in Braille digital, audio, and a version in large type called Reader’s Digest Large Print. The magazine is compact – with its pages roughly half the size of most American magazines’. Reader’s Digest – RD – has now filed for Chapter 11 in USA – that is – Bankruptcy Protection.

When I was a young boy and developing the Reading habit, I used to save my pocket money to buy it. My colleagues used to go and buy comic like Beano, Dandy and others instead – or buy chocolates and sweets instead. The Indian Ismaili sect school that we attended from Class 1 to Form 6 – reading was something most encouraged upon. Thus home works like The Best Book I Have Read; The Book I Remember Most- or like in my case My Most Vivid Dream – which won me a National Prize and awarded by no one else but the great man Aga Khan himself in my secondary school!

Last week I was forced to go and collect my books that have been lying idle and stagnant in the bookshops – with one branch already closed down – and left one that is now concentrating more on cheap novels (price), magazines, sweets and chocolates instead!

It is a very sad state of affairs when ‘literacy gets a kick’ this way – with the cutting price of people buying books at Omani Rials 5 at the maximum! And this more for novels and poems – and not the serious-make-you-think books like mine. You can forgive people with dire stress and concentration on loans repayments – school and college fees for their children – utilities payments of electricity and water – and putting food on the table!

It makes you wonder that even now with the minimum wages to be increased – people have already started grumblings of that not being enough even still! Like my late father used to say to us – when we the children used to complain at family gatherings at least once every Friday week! He used to say – this stomach is the cause of all our problems – it is never satisfied – everyday wants more and more! Till it will kill us one day – and it included in the process!

The people in the bookshops used to tell me – we are keeping your books only because you are a local Author – and we need to encourage and support you! Normally we keep books for a month – and if not moving – we take them out from the stocks! That is why our business is concentrated on those Suppliers that are giving credit facilities – and with promises to take back their stocks if not fast moving!

Reader's Digest 1

Images Reader’s Digest – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

The painful part is the tease, arrogance, condescending and patronising attitudes! They tell the bookshop guys – tell M to reduce the price to 5 Rials – and I will buy 2 books! How nice. kind and gracious of you! Thanks anyway – as the American slang goes – I will take a rain check! The book to publish itself costs far more than that! Then there is the airfreight all the way from USA – the bookshop’s commissions – and your little space overhead – just half an inch to the ceiling – tongue in cheek speaking!

Readers Digest 3

Images Reader’s Digest – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

When I was working in Salalah for a period of 9 months – I used to stay in a flat all alone – and as Madam was working in Muscat! So were the children! Next to my flat was an Iraqi couple – ran away pre Saddam time! So one day he stopped me in front of my flat door – and asked me point blank – if I was Omani? I was thinking of all rude answers to give him back – when the poor man must have seen my face turn red and blue! An Indian good friend told me – Mr. M – we can read you like a book! How ironic!

The poor man explained himself – he said to me – Sorry brother for asking – but I see every day in front of your door more than 3 newspapers! It is strange – because in the offices I see people reading only one newspaper per day! You know us in Iraq – we may not have bread or much food – but we surely would not go out without a newspaper! Or at least 2 to 3 to get different views, outlooks and perspectives! Newspapers are our food too!

Reader’s Digest! I am sorry I have been concentrating so much in writing my books and memoirs – I did not give you my full attention. I stopped buying you after the Iraq invasion – not only you – but also Times, Newsweek and others. Imagine I used to write even to Newsweek long before I even thought of becoming an Author!

Over 12 years ago before George Bush Jnr. Was elected – this is what I had said! Quote – NEWSWEEK sums it all up with its preoccupation, concentration and emphasis on the background and ethnicity of Sen. Joseph Lieberman. If I were an American citizen I would ask, “What’s the big deal–he is American, isn’t he?” But perhaps we in the Arab and Islamic world should be worried. The United States is selling its heart and soul to the Jews in order to win votes. What next? – unquote!

Several years later my direct bosses – both Westerners – and as when leaving – were saying to me about their true ethnicity – they just told me – We thought you were with us? I curtly replied – I am with no one but myself only! My own interests are always first and foremost most important and paramount – nothing else is! I guess that is why my career life took a great dive – just like the Egyptian pilot had moved the jet to the depths of the Pacific ocean!

This article is dedicated especially to Late Sheikh Essa bin Mohamed Al Zedjali – who died on February 21st 2013 – a great entrepreneur genius enterprising founding literary person – and a son of the land! May you rest in eternal peace – Amin!

Stop These Senseless Slaughters!

Like I had said in my previous articlesthe problems that we are facing today in the world are mainly two-folds – One that those that are so-called Religious peoples want to become also as Politicians – and those that are so-called Politicians want to become also ‘Religious’! The other is that everyone is right, ethical and correct – the rest are not – especially the adversaries! We are the good and nice – they are the evil and all bad! More importantly – violence only begets violence!

A woman holds a sign amidst hundreds of Pakistani followers of Shia Islam protesting against targeted killings of Shia Muslims in Karachi

There is no middle ground – or like I like to say ‘The Third Option’ – that is not with you – nor with them – but first and foremost – with ourselves only! Have you noticed that everyone is also ‘nice, decent and good’ – the others are not – all bad and evil! When ‘intelligent, smart and knowledgeable people’ hold fixed and entrenched positions, outlooks and focuses – then something has got to give! Sometimes the results are least expected – when you open a can of worms – or let the genie out of the bottle!

There is a famous expression that a stupid person is doing the same thing (mistake) over and over again – and expecting different results the next time! Tragically and sadly we have not learnt from our past mistakes. Like letting the Iraq –Iran war continue – even start – as it did! The invasion of Kuwait! Like keeping silent, quiet and in inaction when great crimes and atrocities were committed between Arabs versus Arabs (Muslims) – though there were some raised voices when it was the other side adversary doing it!

Consoling Victims Families

Consoling Victims’ Families

Some Images Removed – as too gruesome!

It seems that history is repeating itself – now we have Muslims slaughtering Muslims in cold blood and in senseless brutal unimaginable ways – and just under the breathe we may curse – but then just go quiet – and remain as spectators, inactive and impotent also! And then the hypocrisy! The double standards! To so unbelievable frightening levels! Do we hear ourselves speak? Unimaginable!

The Great Prophet – and all the Prophets and Saints – are turning in their graves! All their works have gone to waste, decadence and demise – utter waste! And yet we continue as normal – and as if nothing much has changed! I could quote and quote so many references from the Holy Book – from the Hadith – the Gospel – the Torah – and so many other places! I could quote from the Great Scholars – the Great Speakers – the Great Leaders – but what is the use? People will read it – and put them all away – for a rainy day – to read the next time! In between nothing will have changed – if not only for the status quo only getting worse – day by day. Allah God is controlling His anger and fury – and that is why we are not scared – nor worried!

People just want to live normal peaceful lives! Live and let live! With their families and children. The usual wants and desires – a shelter – a home – a roof over your head. The usual utilities – water and electricity – or something very near. The freedom to practise one’s beliefs and religion! Even if you murder and kill half of the opposing religious (social) beliefs – do you think that they will be scared stiff to want to change? To come to your ways and beliefs? You only make them only more stronger – more determined!

Kill a few of their leaders! Others more radical and extreme will take their place! You have just made a bad situation turn only worse – everyone ends as a loser – if not you more! Look at this twisted ironies – you kill babies, children and women too in planned or even collateral damages – and then you go home to your own children and family – as if you have not done anything before! Whom are you trying to deceive and fool – but yourself only more! Are you a super human being – the other is just inferior? Or are they just cockroaches and mice? Like in the Goebbels film on Jews that led to the holocaust?

Does not that Palestinian and others like him fighting to be heard – need to live in peace and harmony just like you do? You came all over from all parts of the world – to take his home – his land and his rights – and today 60 years later he still lives as a refugee – his children – his grandchildren – his great grandchildren! You call yourself a democracy and freedom loving – but you oppress and humiliate others in your own country – that want only peace and stability to run their own affairs and in autonomy! You want to pray in your mosque (Masjid)? Why not let me pray in mine! You believe your way – I believe in my way! The hypocrisies and double standards are just too much – even to imagine! People are just core sick in all aspects!

Strangely you will find the very poor, deprived and depressed being used to kill, murder and maim the adversary – whilst those behind the scenes and schemes are far richer, far provided – and far protected and preserved! The Communists said – Religion is the opium of the poor! They cannot be right – but it seems they are!

And the same peoples that were victims before – doing the very same to innocent others! The more you oppress peoples – the more they become radicalised, extreme and fundamentalised! No one wins in the ultimate end!

Please stop these senseless wanton murders, slaughters and massacres – against the fellow Believers – or anyone else for that matter! Before it is too late for all humanity – and that includes you in the equation. You cannot expect to escape! The Muslim Scholars should all speak out – and lead by deeds and examples – there should be real determination and will – and meeting of the minds and in sprits! Before it is too late – for everyone! Be afraid of only God Allah – and no one else!

May Allah God Protect and Preserve us all humanity from His Anger and Fury – Amin Amen

The Ignoring Silence! Reply

The Ignoring Silence!

The Oman Daily Observer Features – February 17th 2013.

I am not sure what is going on or happening nowbut all the telltale signs and signals are not good. In the early stages I thought it was only I feeling these things – but checking and ascertaining with my friends, peers and associates – they tell me the very same things.

As a young boy, I used to live in a small island in Tanzania named Mafia – from the famous Arabic She – Without! Nothing much interesting happened in that island – unless the regular flights went to the island – and the few boats that would now and then call at port. Those were the two venues people would collect and go – as nothing that exciting was happening elsewhere – except to see some of the Islanders come in from the other places – and the few tourists now and then!

It was a place that sometimes went so dead quiet and pretentiously unassuming that it went sometimes to scaring and frightening proportions. And then when the winds and storms did come in – it would rain for weeks – days in and days out – and then nothing moved – even the small Cessna planes that used to come in! But you could always tell a storm was coming – because the trees went so dead quiet – the sea – and everything else for that matter! Coming from the famous expression – The quiet before the storm came in!

Images – Quiet Before The Storm – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Storm 1 Storm 1!Storm 3Storm 2!

You will excuse me for thinking like this as a young boy again! They say that before we die – we all go through the same phases and stages in our earlier lives – and your life goes through all the stages in front of your eyes – before you die! There is nothing permanent and surety in the world except God and Death – and in that way it does not scare me – because I have always strived to do good – but then the rest is left only to Allah God only!

Storm 2

Storm 3!

n our society, we have the famous expression that the best answer to a rude and arrogant person is dead silence! That way you kill and eat their hearts out more that way! Frankly, I do not know if that too is my own answer perhaps – the way people just ignore and sideline me – even a honest and sincere attempt of how and where to send a complimentary copy of my new Road Safety Book – Being The Safe Driver! Behind The Wheel!

Perhaps people are just not interested – or dead tired – or they think – there he goes bragging about his books again! Or is it just a simple case of the usual jealousies, envies and haassiyds – there he goes out with another book – the 8th one so far – this time on Road Safety Awareness in a novel format!

You would have imagined that the book would be all rages – seeing that we have one of the highest road accidents and fatalities in the world – coupled with all the campaigns running concurrently now from all sources and angles – but still the accidents continue unabated – as if talking to brick walls – or just the indifference, lack of care and interests. This is what I am talking about here! So what is really going on? It is really scary and frightening!

PP Native Cover.4097374.indd

The Book Front Cover!

Frankly, I would prefer someone to write back and say – Hey! I am not interested in your complimentary gift copy – because I think you are just trying to show off here about your books! If I am interested, I would purchase the book myself – I can afford it – and do not need free copies – thank you! Or even a more blunt one – if you are really keen to deliver your book to me – you know where my office is!

Like one great personality once said to me in a meeting when I was trying to explain some issues in delays in delivery – he blurted out – Cut the crap! – and come to the point! That says a lot of what is supposed to be of our Omani culture, attitudes and approaches of being polite, nice, courteous and decent always – and adopting foreign cultures instead – of insulting and degrading a fellow Omani in front of all the others – just because you can as a Senior!

I have a long elephant memory – and when a good person I liked invited me for a home party I asked if this person would be the VIP there – and she said – Yes he will. So I said in advance – Thanks for the invitation – but I simply will not attend! Because though this person is no longer in authority – his mouth has still not got the message that he is out cold in the world – disregarded and disrespected by almost many people – except perhaps his own near ones! And those he did favours to!

People forget that one day you will end retiring – or leaving the company and country – or you may die too! Or sometimes you may wish for a quick early death – whilst you suffer in terrible pain and hurt in bed for long. No one knows what is waiting for you in life in the future – what your fate, destiny and legacy is going to be! If it can happen to the most powerful people that once were – who are you in that ‘small’ office to think differently?

That is why it is very important to do good and nice things always to your fellow human beings – especially those in want and need – the less advantaged and privileged compared to you! At least, if you cannot – then please do not do bad things instead! Keeping silence and ignoring one is a sure way that it too will happen to you too one day for sure – because what goes around – comes around! Mark my words – and remember them too!

So I have decided no free complimentary book to anyone – buy if you wish – do not buy if you wish – but it does not bother me anymore! I am writing these books in the same wave that birds fly – because they know they can – and I need to keep alive all my memoirs in writing for safe guard and keeping!

One day far in the future one day people will ask – who is Majid Al Suleimany MAS? Are there any of his works in existence? And I want the answer to be – Yes Positive! Meanwhile my friend – continue to ignore and be silent! I will just pray for you – that is the least I can do for now!

Minimum Wages!

There is this expression made frequently by many Scholars that everyone of us is responsible – in one way or the other – for one’s action, inaction, delayed actions and even in missed opportunities. If one goes by just Advisors – as from the famous tale – you will end up with your donkey drowned in the river – instead of being able to sell it – to avoid hunger and poverty! You return home empty handed – and your status quo becomes more worse than ever before – just because you listened to ‘Advisors’ – instead of deciding for yourself – as you are required to do – or at least go by your own gut feelings at the most!

Omani Worker 4

Omani Faces - Toyota

Images – Omani Workers!

I am not going to get deeply involved in the midst of the ‘heated discussions’ as it now seems to be going on – except to raise a few pertinent and relevant pointers! They are: -

  • · Every country has absolute rights to look after its own! Why should we Omanis be denied from this – after years and years of being receptive and respectful to the expatriates in our country – far more than any country in the world – even from our own neighbours too for that matter?
  • · It is not only Oman doing it – even countries like China and Indonesia are doing the very same things for their own populace.
  • · For a very long time Omanis – especially in The Private Sector – have been sidelined, marginalised, transcended – and taken for granted in the ridiculing, condescending and patronising attitudes, focuses and approaches of many expatriate bosses – and even from our very own – especially ‘The Old Guards’ connect!
  • · Sometimes – especially the family run businesses – one may be forgiven to think – that they own the companies – and not the other way around of the families running the businesses.
  • · Only lately some of them have awoken to their national duties – let alone CSR – to their fellow disadvantaged Omanis – let alone making huge profits at the expense of others
  • · People should not just look at the expatriates taking their money out of the country – but also look at how some of these companies operate in their modus operandi vis-à-vis keeping monies in the country!
  • · They are now scared stiff because these new regulations may ‘eat more’ some of their profits per se!
  • · On the threat of some deciding to pack and leave – some foreign companies in Indonesia have already started the trend – the risks are still worth taking – taking into consideration the risky, complicated and complex times that the society is in now – comparable to the global trend – and more near at home too!
  • · Like George Bush Jnr. Had said – ‘you are either with us – or with them’ syndromes! There is no better place on the face of the earth to do businesses – and one should not look deep only at profits – but how the society looks at and treats you!
  • · All the expatriates in Oman know deep well the legality, validity and the authencity of the above!
  • · Some issues will still need to be made. For example if I am in the echelon levels – and my salary package is at 350 OMR – how do I feel when my peer at OMR 220 has now the difference of only 25 OMR to reach me?
  • · The jealousy, envy and haassiyds outlooks need to be looked at – and especially like I always say too – the inward looking and narrow-minded outlooks of many of us – instead of looking at things at the bigger picture – and outside the box things!
  • · It is not clear – at least for me – if this amount is only the basic salary or the total consolidated salaries? If it is the later – many Omanis – especially in the Oil and Gas sector – are already getting these rates!
  • · They are an example and beacon for others to follow! The Banks and Telecoms are not far behind – though in top echelons – for even Omanis – the reverse is the trend!
  • · Not speaking fluent Arabic – or being able to write – should not be the determining factor of determining talented, experienced and qualified Omanis in our country for their opinions, views, suggestions and advices!
  • · Conversely, speaking very fluent etc does not necessarily correlate with being very smart, knowledgeable and intelligent either. A lot of good usable highly potentials local talents, skills and human resources are wasted by such inward looking and narrow minded outlooks!
  • · I am not going to brag about my books – but I guess the American Publishers are in ‘shock and awe’ seeing the treatment of my books – and even being censored in coming out in my articles – by others determined to keep us ‘down there’ syndromes!
  • · We need to support more local talents, skills, entrepreneurships and human resources development in the country – and not only in arts and drawings – but overall!
  • · Not in SMEs for crafts and dressmaking – but why not in Top Management too? I mean across the board – not the usual few that always appear in the news – and as if there are no ‘other Omanis’ available – given the right attitudes, approaches and focuses – and the right training, guidance, counseling and mentoring!
  • · It is high time that we looked at our own – and those of our truly feeling and caring expatriates are most welcome to join the bandwagon in our honourable pursuits!

HM Speech 1

May Allah God Protect and Preserve us all – and our achievements – Amin.

Between Us Only!

The Foreign Angle!

Please bear with me whilst I connect the dots!

Case 1 - Some years ago in my visit to that distant land my late Uncle was visibly very upset that I had decided to stay in a hotel – instead at staying at his place. The poor man had built an outside room with an adjoining toilet and kitchen – even running flush water toilet – in the hope and expectancy that some of us here would decide to stay at his house! Compared to other houses around – his house was in better shape, standard and condition compared to them. He ruefully asked me – those 25 dollars you pay daily – how much I would have enjoyed receiving them – instead of the hotel! Incidentally, the hotel was owned by one public official – but that is another story for now!

Affectionate Couple - Isolated

Mixed Marriage 2

So to please him I decided to stay a few days at his place. My real reasons not wanting to stay with them is not inconveniencing them – like the first time I did when they started looking for ‘good rice’ for me – though I would have preferred the local dishes instead – but they thought I was kidding – and just wanted to protect them!

I saw one large (chicken) cock in the place – and too late I realised these were the same ‘stock and barrel’ of the homeland – because I got very angry the next day when it was brought for my meal! I had admired it on its beauty ‘as alive’ – and not as a meal! That tells a lot of going to Omani (descendants) houses and praise things – because of this fear of ‘the red eye’ element. Something those in Oman long for even expatriates would know about!

Mixed Marriage 1

Mixed Marriages 1 – From My Book – Between Us Only! – Short Takes! – www.myown-ebooks.com

Early in the morning I was awoken with a pot of steaming hot coffee and a few dried up (in bad shape) dates – because of what I first thought was me being from Oman customs and traditions – especially in the Interior. So I secretly checked out with the housemaid if this was so – and she curtly replied that as far as she knew – this was an ongoing tradition of the house! Including the element of speaking in Arabic when we were alone – and strange the dialect because some local words were added in the speaking – like calling a hill as ‘mlima’ – a typical 100% Swahili word for that matter!

I guess when they will ever come here we need to follow the Israeli ways of doing things – when they bring their own – from distant places – for ‘orientation’ – and the poor Palestinians meanwhile still remaining as refugees – 50 years on! But that too is for another day!

Case 2 – A long time ago – when my Consultancy was still alive – I went with my Indian Assistant lady to make a presentation for our business proposal for one reputable firm in town. The owner was a previous high profile figure – and it was very disappointing – because he thought I could not ‘hear’ Hindi – after establishing what were my roots and ethnicity! I studied in Indian schools from class 1 to Form 6 there! The man was saying nasty things like ‘what did I know about Management and HR – and he thought I was a ‘signing-off’ only GM – but the Indian lady did all the stuff. I wrote about this many times before!

Mixed Marriage 3

Case 3…. I had sent about my books to many local newspapers – only this one and another one positively responded! In the others – I have seen so many coverages by others – for even lesser issues – and especially if they are pretty foreign looking ladies personalities – and with due respects and apologies. Yet these same places always talk ‘big’ about national issues – at least in print!

Case 4…. I am in this shopping mall – and I see this excited local boy running to his friends – excitedly – There is a European saleslady in that shop! And they all gang up together – to go and see her – and buy some expensive sweets that they do not really want – and or have never tasted before!

In the shopping mall – do not forget I was young once – and had the roving eye too! She was pretty – yes! But there were far more prettier girls from other albeit other foreign nationalities – but frankly the young local girls were equally – and if even not more too! But this did not excite them – in the least! The colonial hangovers just do not want to disappear here!

A Wake Up Call! When are we going to wake up from this deep slumber – these jealousies, envies, personalities and polarisation things? It seems we see things – but still yet do not see – hear things but yet do not hear – and even let not others to speak too! Those days of scaring, control, subjugation and domination are long gone – but we still live like ostriches to the ground!

The truth is we have many of our own that we should value and esteem first of all. Prioratise and uphold in values! It does not mean ignoring and or belittling the others – especially the ‘invited guests and residents’ – but the truth is that many of us still feel impotent and useless – and as if I suspect that a real problem exists in the mind set of us many Arabs: That we do not feel that we are owners of our own purpose, destiny, legacy and future – and either lack the confidence and will power – and or just the evil selfish inward looking that is driving – and controlling us too!

You will excuse me too – for more than a month now – I have been writing on just normal and casual issues. It took the case of my very sick brother there now – after leaving the country to stay with his foreign wife abroad – that made me wake up – to the terrible truth! This is a double edged sword – but for my poor brother marrying another foreigner – when we had all the pretty decent local girls here – and the other side of the coin – getting into difficulties – because you just married a foreigner – and it is you the Omani that has to leave your country – if you want to stay with her! We lose the children too – even if they are half Omanis – for that matter!

When will we wake up and learn? Before it is too late? I am really – really tired now! Allah God Protect and Preserve us all – Amin - Take Care!

“Our religion is one of faith, compassion, love, tolerance, and understanding – yet some of us use its name to justify their wanton and indiscriminate acts.”

This book is a large collection of articles the author has written for the book and from his newspaper column entitled “Between Us Only” in the Oman Daily Observer. He writes from a management perspective and thirty years employment in human resources and training. No punches are pulled in describing his experiences with racial prejudice in big corporation culture, both from expatriate staff and even his fellow Omani workers.

But the scope is not limited to business issues. Reasons for the economic lag in Arabic countries are also floated: “I suspect that a real problem exists in the mind of Arabs: They do not feel that they own their own countries.” These issues seem prescient of the contemporary “Arab Spring.” The al-Qaeda phenomenon is analyzed, as is the since-repressed popular rebellion against the re-election of Ahmedinejad in Iran.

His reporting on the actual conditions that foreign workers must suffer in the oil-super-rich country of Dubai are astounding. The bulk of the book is about management and human resource issues, however, and the author’s commentary is unique in its Arabic and Muslim perspective.

Suleimany originally wanted to break up the book into topics, but was told by his countries Censor Board to print them chronologically. The result is one that might put off more academically interested readers in Arabic management issues. There are no neat categories to index or access in an orderly fashion. But the general drift of the writing is illuminatingly simple. Simple human respect and kindness, universal values that transcend culture and creed, are re-affirmed throughout.

The tone of the book is journalistic, not too far from the sense of an American editorial column. It is filled with concrete examples of the way companies operate in the Arab world and as such is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in that subject. It is not a book on management theory in the abstract; the author’s rationale is moral and ethical, based on an Islamic understanding of the human condition. His approach is moderate, however, with the result being more light on effective corporate management, from the unique perspective of a manager-writer form Oman

Between Us Only!

Let Us Pray!

Continuing on the series from last one of Family Pressures! This time – Let Us Pray!

The other day I got a missed phone call from one person outside Oman. I did not receive the call and it went missed. The people there have a tendency of calling you in ‘missed call’ format – and expect you to call back! I did not recognise the number – and typical I nowadays just did not bother to call back. The next day the number was still there – again missed.

Whilst I was debating with myself whether I should call back – the number rang – and this time incessantly and long! So I gathered enough courage and sort of said Hello. He replied to me in Arabic – which was really unusual – and just said – please call me back – without saying who he was!

 Prayers 2

Prayers 2

Again I ignored the call. Then a message came through – again strangely in Arabic. Please call me. I am your Uncle… but no name given! This time I was determined and was about to switch off my mobile when as if he knew what I was asking – said who he was! A sort of uncle in ranks – being a close friend of my late father when we were there! I had no alternative – except to call – and finding already what excuse and ruse to use this time to say I had no money to send – which is the truth anyway! But people simply cannot believe that this can happen to an Author!

If you do not believe me – come to the house and see the boxes and boxes of books of books returned from the bookshops – with the tags still on! I cannot blame them – they have been extra nice and patient with me to keep on storing my books – but the time had come to part ways. The shock was ‘we are now only storing novels, magazines and sweets – because people simply do not buy now serious books – and no one (or few) buy any book that goes over OMR 5 – yes – that is the cut out rate in our literacy drive!

Prayers 3

Prayers 3

Anyway – poor Uncle related – asks me if I know of a certain family now in Oman? I ask him why? He retorts – do you or don’t you? Thank God to our upbringing – I keep my manners and respect on! Then he tells me! This family has ignored their relative here that is dying in hospital. He is calling out for them when he could speak! Now he is in a coma – and is not expected to recover! I have heard those stories before – and people did recover! I have also heard of the story of one old lady recovering and doing well – only to hear she died next morning!

Just imagine how God loves us! He has not given us the secret of when, how and where we will die – otherwise the world will turn turtle – upside down – and moving from one house to another in saying goodbyes! And perhaps few would even venture to build or invest? Or could it be the opposite? I do not know – I am just like you – not knowing either these secrets!

Then he says – please tell them to come and see him! Then I ask him – Uncle why they do not want to come? He goes silent – you can almost hear the debate going on! Then he goes Religious – about talking on someone – backbiting – and he is not there to defend himself!

 Prayers 1

Prayers 1

The real reasons are not important. But let us say they may be at least 60% strong reasons for not wanting to do so! There is still 40% – being your parent – and your blood too! The East Africans say continuously too – blood is thicker than water! Would one still be very angry with your parent – that he is dying and being looked by others – even if related – but you related – and even more related – do not want still go and see him – even as he is dying – he has begged you to forgive him – and see him before he breathes his last?

Where are our hearts now – all turned to stones! I have heard of these things happening – but never realised that they are real – and can happen in real life too! That is why our Religious Leaders should talk more on our everyday lives – and its aspects – and how to live in this world with the others – even from different faiths and places too!

That family and child that ended in you being insulted by your boss – suffered all kinds of insults and ridicules – subjugation and controls – yet there is simply no guarantee or security for you in the future – especially if you become very sick – and dependent on others – as a pariah and as a parasite!

The problems that the world is facing now are this determination and will to impose one’s measurements and outlooks on others! So-called Religious people have become Politicians – and the Politicians have become religious! Everyone is correct, ethical, The other is ‘branding and name-calling’ of others – and as if ‘butter will not melt’ in themselves of their mouths fiascos – ‘angels, good and nice peoples’ – whilst others are not!

That is why we are in so much troubles and problems now! The situation has gone so bad that materialism, individualism, subjectiveness, consumerism and selfishness have stepped in. Hearts have just turned to stones – solid ones too! Including lack of care, feelings – touch and humanity even! That is why as I had said before – Let Us Pray! Amin Amen!

Families’ Pressures! Reply

Families Pressures!

There is something that I will share with you today that I have not disclosed before – apart from what I had already said before that as far as I am concerned I feel that people in family relationships and their interfaces is where people misbehave badly and inappropriately – after the Offices environments! From the same behaviours, attitudes, focuses and approaches from the office environments – that a few Baizas more in your pockets make you think that you are unique and special – and you can afford and do look down on those less fortunate than you – or are just struggling to keep their heads above water!

Family 2

Families Image 2

When it comes to family relationships – this is a more bitter pill to swallow – however sugar coated – and it is more hurtful and painful than the offices’ environments – because here in family relationships you expect better treatment and results – especially if you have been a family member that liked your family – and have actually contributed in more ways than one!

What hurts more is the patronising, condescending, marginalising and belittling approaches, attitudes and focuses – and even coming from junior ranks (by birth) – and just because they are making money now – and you have long stopped doing so!

Family 3

Image Families 3

You may not ask for favours and or for special treatment – but this does not change anything in outlooks and perspectives! It is as if you secretly do – but do not want to show yourself openly and publicly that you do!

When I went on Hajj a few years ago – I had called all my children and family together and gave them written Instructions – a will type of thing – in case I do not return alive from the Hajj. It is part of the rituals and requirements of Hajj anyway to do so!

During the 1960s after independence of Tanzania – our late parents sold everything we had in Mafia Island – and moved over to Zanzibar – only to return penniless after the bloody revolution of 1964 back to our previous island of Mafia. A lot of family members that had not moved had a field day to see that once that well off family (not really rich) had returned hungry and desperate! One of our uncles had vacated one of his houses to accommodate us.

It was a very difficult and hard time for us in the family – that is why many of us ‘explode’ when some miscreants want to include us in the categories and groupings that they think we fit – instead of us letting decide for ourselves – what we really want for us – which is that being from the stock of the family that went to Africa to look for a living at the darkest time of our history – we have returned back home! Nothing more – and nothing less!

Family 4

Family 1

Image Families 1

I then vowed that from the first day I started to work – I will give my full salaries to my late Father. That night I could hear my late father sob – so being naïve and not knowing – I asked my late mother why was dead crying yesterday night – and she said – son – you made him cry because of what you did!

What I wanted to share with you also is this element that I am now a happy at home retired person – and under no pressures – family and or otherwise – to find jobs for the teenagers out of high school and colleges – and especially as my job was in Human Resources (HR)!

It came at a just right time with the increased pressures now! I remembered clearly my last nasty experience was a family relative from the home town insisting he wanted a job that ‘must pay him at least minimum 350 OMR’ – otherwise he will stay at home – though he just finished secondary school with low passes averages! Years later he was still looking for that salary – and hopping from one job to another in his pursuits!

The worst part in family relationships is when people play with their lives in making hasty wrong awful decisions with serious consequences and repercussions – and expect family members to salvage and bail them out – and sometimes it is never ending – from one saga to another – and still expect the same results. I forget now who said it – but a stupid person is one who makes the same decisions – time and time again – and expecting different results the next time!

People have their own lives – and their own direct families to look after – and sometimes there are a lot of shows and facades of ‘families being together’ – but it is the anathema of outsiders that they are more concerned about – rather than really being together. People are real good actors – and actresses!

Nowadays I feel great and elated – away from all these pressures – especially job related ones! The Westerners and The Expatriates in our land do not realise and appreciate on these pressures being placed on us the locals – and they look at us – weigh us – according to their own outlooks and whims! The concept of extended family is something they do know exists in society – but just pretend not to notice and or feel it! The ironical and sad part is that some of the expatriates are even worse off than us in these regards – but put on a brave front and façade that they are still different!

Sometimes the situation can go to real across the borders and extremes – not only being cursed behind your back – or even in front – but being treated like a pariah – and even be discommunicated, debarred and excluded as a family member anymore – by the same judge, jury and executor! Family pressures can really be daunting and damning – however careful and watchful one can be!

Images Writing – You can write anywhere! – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Some years ago, I was working in this new just come in venture foreign company and I gave my first book Between Us Only! as a complimentary gift to this just arrived in Oman European Manager – and who had joined after me! He came from the Tanzanian branch of the same company. In the book there was an article titled Are You Afraid? It was about magic and witchcraft in East Africa. One day earlier we had got talking about Tanzania and the subject had cropped up – and in good faith and sincerity – I had thought of giving him the book!

A few days later, I had asked him if he had read the book and especially the article – but he retorted that he had not! This person had taken a lot of pride of how he got rid of a Tanzanian local who was in the real position before him – and wanted to have an added plus of including an Omani in his list tick off too! Which he successfully did – by telling everyone in Management that M had written a book that was critical and radical – and especially of The West!

3 - Writers

Image – You need to be interested to write!

That was his outlook, choice and prerogative – and he was free to think like what he wanted to! No one can stop another in what one wants to think – after reading a book – though in mine was nothing but the sincere and genuine truth – and as most people well acknowledge too!

The same outlook was outlandishly made by some crude Western Expatriates in my also previous Western run company. And that comes to the main point to be made here – The Westerners and The Foreigners – believe in freedom and democracy only if you are in their camp – and are in support of their views and in outlooks only!

But if you are different – or take a different independent outlook and perspective then you are in Big Trouble with them! Thus creating my two books in Arab Management – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking and A Cry For Help! – please see my books website www.myown-ebooks.com and www.majidbooks.com When we go to their countries we must adjust to be like them – but when they come to our country – we too must adjust to be like them! We never ever expect to win here!

4 - Writing

Starting Early To Write!

Particularly, they do not want you to write about same levels salaries, perks and privileges that they receive – compared to even same qualified experienced locals! Or pushing and supporting Omanisation, Youth Recruitment, Training and Development! In that regard, so do our own old guards too! How long will these things continue – there is a break up point somewhere down the line!

1 - Writing

Image – Writing!

Do not support the Palestinians or The Arab cause. Even if you are Arab – or Muslim! Shut up – Keep Quiet – and Sit There in the Corner! Do not write topics like No More Wars please! Or Lift The Gaza Blockage! Or write anything against Israel! Did you notice that the Israeli Jews can criticize their own government easily – but the American supporters and Jews especially do not allow you to do this?

This is how my two sequel books of series Between Us Only! had run into publishing problems in USA! Inadvertently, the company went against my books – though my earlier books attacking our own had no issues! In the end they had agreed to refund my monies paid – because they simply did not want association with my books!

Makes the whole exercise of their preaching others for democracy, freedom of speech, freedom of expression as shallow and hollow – because they do not allow it in their country to outsiders – and though they are outsiders here in Oman – they want the same for the locals to ‘fall down and play dead’ after the command – when you misbehave!

That is why they hate The Arab Spring Uprisings – because it just works against them! And Israel especially! Because they can no longer control, dominate and subjugate others – and use people as they wish! Or by using others under their control and domination to do their dirty works and biddings for them! That even goes down to an individual level – and Writers, Authors and Columnists like us are not exempt or spared – and are special targeted for writing on THE TRUTH ONLY!

But this issue does not only extend to expatriates in our midst – but even locals too! In one interview on so-called VP HR was making great fun, joke and mirth about my writings – and my books and websites! Yet I was there not for a job in his Company – but more as a Consultant in HR! Nothing to do as me as in writing – which is not profession linked – as writing being just my hobby, interests and passion! Even though he admitted I was more experienced and qualified than even many applications received – including external ones too!

It will shock you still further to find even family members being against you – because you are writing to others about ‘our family’ – as if you do not belong to that family! And then smirking jovial ‘friends’ that take great enjoyment and fun to ridicule and insult your intelligence by wise ridiculous cracks and jokes in front of others!

Part of what they see as the ‘pecking order’ to them – and making them feel great and elated – and that they are on the ‘higher levels and status’ than you! Yet they cannot write even one sentence – in any language – let alone in English!

The other week I wrote to many people telling them about my new Road Safety Novel – Behind The Wheel – www.bethesafedriver.com. Only 3 people responded to say they were interested to read the book. The others that include high profile peoples that are always in the news just ignored me – if they had not deleted the mail too. Yet they are always propagandists for change – and great talkers and Advisors to others! That is the scary and shocking part – at least to me!

A great lady fan of mine – who had died in a nasty road accident – had said to me that people are simply jealous and envious of you – because they know you have the knack and the expertise of writing – and they cannot – even if they dearly wished for this. Mr. M – you have not lost – you have won! The same thing was said to me by two other lady fans – and several gents too – all local!

There was also this Indian HR guy – who first of all is not supposed to be in that position as is reserved for Omanis – who behaved just like The Western Finance Manager in a meeting with the local GM of a company I was doing some HR Project with. He thought he was cracking a great joke in the meeting – and so was a German guy who pretended to be a friend – whilst all the time feeding poison to this same GM. In the end my contract was reduced time period wise – but I quit and left within half an hour of getting the new contract – remained unsigned – and resignation instead!

That is how the cookie crumbles. I really urge you to read my two Arab Management books above.

In summary and in conclusion – writing is not a dirty word! If you cannot write – do not try to belittle, patronize, ridicule and marginalise those that can!

Funeral Expenses Burden! Reply

For January 27th 2013.

Between Us Only!

Funeral Expenses Burden!

  • What we tend to forget is the poor deceased immediate family members now divided attention to get money for funeral expenses – rather than just mourning for their deceased ones!
  • Even family that have suffered from road accidents are not spared – despite the great traumatic and painful times in their lives now!
  • People arrive at these funeral gatherings in their best formal attire – both men and women!
  • It seems it is a time for a ‘show off’ of the latest fashions and in-thing in town – rather than a funeral gathering!
  • It looks more like a formal party going on – rather than a funeral gathering!
  • The latest talk in town, rumours and gossips take essence in the gatherings – and including back biting – even the died person too is not spared!

The other day my sister was calling me to say that our relative rank wise grandmother had died in our home village in Hayll Al Ghaaf in Quriyat. She had died in Daghmar hospital after a long illness. She was the lady who inadvertently had looked after our late father as a boy when his mother had died – our paternal grandmother – peace be upon all of them!

The time was nearing noon – and we knew that by the time we collected ourselves – we will be already late for the funeral – taking into consideration the quick and rapid funeral arrangements in the society and waiting for no one for the dead body to be so hurriedly buried! Then my good sister suggested we offer our condolences early tomorrow morning – and that would be better – and for the reasons that will be crystal clear as you read on!

In an interview with a local newspaper last week – titled Collecting funds for funeral costs un-Islamic’Oman’s Assistant Grand Mufti Dr Kahlan bin Nabhan al Kharousiimage below – has said that collecting funds to cover funeral costs should be avoided. He also said that providing meals to mourners was against the teachings of Islam.

Dr. Kahlan Nabhan Al Kharousi

Some families collect funds on a monthly basis to cover funeral expenses. Dr Kharousi said there is a need for people to understand the importance of avoiding extravagance during mourning. Collecting funds to cover funeral expenses is considered Makrooh (an offensive act). Having to organise meals at funeral is unwanted. It burdens those who have to be condoled.

He said it is improper for people going to give their condolences to expect meals at the venue. People should also avoid visiting the family during meal times. That too is Makrooh. There no reward from Allah for this – he said. Dr Kharousi said that some people pay for funeral expenses from the deceased’s inheritance. In such cases, the funeral costs are deducted from the inheritors’ share.

This practice is wrong because what a deceased has left behind belongs to his legal inheritors. This should be avoided even if the deceased has requested it in his will. In such cases the will is considered invalid – the Deputy Mufti said.

Funeral Pyre

Image – The Funeral Pyre!

I have written on this same topic from May 2003 – and 10 years later writing on the very same topics! Nothing much seems to have changed – after all the talks, meetings and lectures – after great shows offs – things just remain the same – and if not inadvertently even worse off than ever before. The topics I had written were respectively titled – Is this a funeral gathering? – Expensive Even To Die! – Even In Death?

My poor good sister was saying to me – we will get chance for by tomorrow to get some money to take with us – we cannot go with ‘empty hands’ as it is! Frankly – for me it would be better to arrive immediately with ‘empty hands’ – than to wait some time to come with something!

Islamic Grave

Image – Islamic Grave!

Actually, another thing that we should also really talk about is this quick hurried burials – where even if the children of the deceased are away 4 to 5 hours wait period are simply not entertained! This needs to change too!

These are the kind of things that Allah God is not pleased with us! And if you speak out – you get labelled with all kinds of brand names, colourings and labels – and your birth place, origins and ethnicity can just add ‘fuel to the fire’ – if you are not careful here!

May Allah God direct us to the right ways and paths – and away from his anger and fury – Amin Amen!

Tutu's Children: Behind the scenes

Between Us Only!

Tutu’s Children!

I was really traumatised and emotionalised to watch this programme in Al Jazeera Television – and I am really convinced that it is something that we can try in our part of the world – especially in the GCC – for our youth to make them better leaders and innovators in our society. The idea comes from the same origins and part and parcel of encouraging of SMEs!

Tutu Children 2

Bishop Desmond Tutu with Course Organisers

Tutu’s Children is a documentary in Al Jazeera Television of the living legend – South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s leadership scheme, following five accomplished young leaders as they are coached in the way of their patron to become a ‘moral task force’ for Africa – a network of 25 inspirational leaders, together mandated to tackle some of the continent’s most impenetrable problems

In the programme is set on the ideas and dreams of Desmond Tutu to lead an experiment to build a network of inspirational leaders to tackle Africa’s most stubborn problems. For this group of already impressive individuals – it is a life changing process – full of highs, lows and self-realization.

Tutu Children 3

Course Participant

For Desmond Tutu, it is another way of leaving a lasting legacy for the continent he loves – and as he bows out of public life. If this scheme is at all successful – it would ultimately bear an uplifting message for all – that the emergence of leaders need not be left to chance.

Who can one believe in to change the world for the better? From the economic turmoil in Europe – to the Arab Springs in the Arab world – to the presidential race in the USA – it seems that everywhere leadership is in crisis. No less so in Africa – where Archbishop Desmond Tutu is heading up an experiment to build a new network of inspirational leaders – who are together committed to tackling their countries’ most stubborn problems.

Tutu is a living legend for many. It is his personal wish and ambition to leave behind a more positive and enterprising destiny, legacy and future for Africa long after his death – and he wants this to be in his epitaph of what he had left behind! The Bishop has been a fierce advocate of peace and justice his whole life – unofficially leading millions without ever holding political office.

Tutu Children 4

The Class Room

With exclusive access, this series follows Tutu’s 25 person-strong class of 2012 – focusing in particular detail on the lives of five very different participants – as together they are coached to become a ‘moral task force’ for Africa.

In part two of the programme – sharing the Archbishop Tutu’s dream – the young leaders have an emotional meeting with Desmond Tutu and are warned of the pitfalls of leading in Africa. Each of the 25 top African professionals who have arrived in Cape Town for a leadership retreat have their own idea of what the continent needs from their generation of leaders.

They have been inspired by heroic examples to serve society. But they are about to encounter heavy responsibilities and tough deep soul-searching on the road to great leadership qualities and for the future and destiny of Africa.

Tutu's Children: Behind the scenes

Bishop Tutu and Child!

You can watch both the two episodes in Al Jazeera Television. I urge those in the leadership to take some time and efforts to listen to the programmes – even if the programmes are in English! Frankly it is a good business idea for our entrepreneurs to think of opening something like Institute of Development Management – where such a programme can be run – and amalgamated with the Institute of Public Administration.

Certainly, we would and do need better competent, dynamic, pragmatic, committed and wise leaders in the society – to make our world a better place for us all! They can be leaders in all facets of life – from future Company Managers and Public Officials! Frankly I have high respects and esteem for those with Doctorates – but with sincere apologies here – some of the interfaces have been disappointing – to say the least! At least an experiment we can try to copy and emulate here!

A great lady fan of mine – who had died in a nasty road accident had said to me that people are simply jealous and envious of you – because they know you have the knack and the expertise of writing – and they cannot – even if they dearly wished for this.

If you cannot write – do not try to ridicule, belittle and marginalise those that can!
