On 25 Aug 2014 22:10,  a good reliable friend (source) sent me this email – about her experiences with some Foreign Arab (Levant) Ladies. Will reproduce verbatim as is self explanatory!

QUOTE –

Dear Majid,

After what had happened to me today I immediately thought of sharing this with you – it might not be the kind of story you want to write in your news forum – please do write it for the sake of omani women.

It all started when I took my kids for swimming in Al Khalili swimming in Al khuwair near the Egyptian school. As usual it was ladies time and the pool was filled with mums and kids – most of the kids were below 5 years of age.  As soon as my girls were changed and in the pool – I took a chair to sit and observe them – then this terrible smell of cigarette started – and in the middle of all kids and other mums were these 4 (shami) ladies smoking. I approached them and politely requested if they want to smoke they should go outside the pool area – they ignored me – so again I explained its not allowed to smoke in such public area where small kids are exposed to smoking – I could not believe their own kids who are like 3 to 5 were just there playing and breathing all the smoke like its nothing.

Ok – back to my story – the lady smoker just looked up at me and gave that look  like nothing happened – I gave her an empty cup and told her in a firm tone – please put that cigarette out. the other shami lady was like its not your business so I lost it and took the cigarette from her mouth and threw down and stepped on it. then they all started attacking me – like smoking was a great thing – I could not believe it they all took cigarettes and I kept repeating its not allowed to smoke there are kids here and they were – this is our rights – so I said what right?? you have no right to smoke between all these small kids – all these other mums do not appreciate what you are doing – they were saying well if you don’t like our smoking then leave the pool!!

Imagine then, she says if we were american you would not have said a thing – so i said if you were american you would have respect for other people – and she said listen – you omani women – you are not like us – we have rights – so I said what rights?? smoking rights? and she answered the moment your rights ends our rights begin. so I said Alhamdullilah I am Omani in Oman so my rights will not end for stupid women like you who fight for smoking like its a wonderful thing. Imagine they had hijabs on and they say – then let Oman ban the swimming costume if they can not allow women to smoke.  so I said we respect that and that is why we have a women day.

I told her off – Lady you may smoke to your death in your home surrounded by your kids but here in public place where there are other women and very small children you should not smoke and don lecture me about rights and i never heard of women rights to smoke maybe in Syria but not in Oman.

and she started swearing on omani women – you omani women you have no thaqafa – thank god we dont have it – if it means we smoke in front of our kids. I have not seen such disrespectful women like shami women – they are rude and just because they do not have values in their country they do not respect other people’s values.

Please majid if you ever get chance put this on your blog.

Have Said It Before!

  • I came to you with good advice – but you like not Good Advisers – Prophet Saleh (Methu Saleh) RA
  • If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead, either write things worth reading or do things worth the writing – Benjamin Franklin
  • Life cannot defeat a Writer who is in love with writing , for life itself is a Writer’s love until death – Edna Ferber

After Compliments;

I was reading this article in Muscat Daily of Today’s date titled ‘Saudis look to private businesses for youth jobs’ – and by one Aya Batrawy – Associated Press. It brought memories to me when I really rocked the boat in my Company then in my first Omanisation article I had single handedly written and was published by Times of Oman in May 1982 – Thoughts on Omanisation. This was after my article May 10 1982 titled – Stray Thoughts on Oman Traffic. The articles were specially sanctioned for approval for publishing by Late Mr. Eissa Al Zadjali – PBUH.

Also in January 2000 – I had written a full lengthy report interview in The Oman Economic Review titled Mind Matters – which talked about Training & Development and Omanisation of The Youth.

These articles were long time before I ever thought I would become a Writer, Columnist and Author of 10 books – 2 in Arab Management – www.myownmajid.com – and 2 in Road Safety – www.bethesafedriver.com . My ex columns are now in www.majidwrite.com and www.majidall.com

You will forgive me for laughing inside me that despite my two Arab Management books – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking – www.trafford.com/08-0889 – and A Cry For Help! – www.myown-ebooks.com and www.myownmajid.com – suffice to say that both these books were published well before the Arab Spring Uprisings! Many International Readers – and Reviewers including Kindle and Indie – have classified the books as premonition, foretell and forecast of things that came to pass.

The main theme on both my books were the dominating expatriate Mafias and their attitudes, behaviours and treatment of locals – even the senior and qualified ones – let alone the not experienced youth seeking for jobs lots.

It is amazing that there is still a lot of talk and rhetoric – but since 1982 onwards – we have been talking – and on the very same topics and subjects. My career and progression took a direct hit and dent when I wrote especially The Omanisation article – but eventually it was reproduced in Al Fahal Magazine – after my explanations – why I was concerned and worried for the future at that time!

Anyway, I thought I will just remind – lest people forgot what it took me courage and guts to do all these time – at personal costs and loss – and sadly even the top VIPs I sent my books just ignored and marginalised me! That is with the exception of a few expatriate CEOs who did acknowledge receiving the books – and thanking me!

Has the situation got better for me? I do not think so – if you read previous of my articles here – on the very same subject! People like us will always continue to suffer a lot of pain and hardships – because we ‘dare to open our mouth – and speak The Truth – and advise sincerely, honestly and genuinely! And we will never learn our lessons – until it is too late for everyone!

Anyway – today if I die – people will one day say – He said it! But we treated him badly – and just marginalised and ignored him!

Take Care!

  • A mediocre person tells, A good person explains, A superior person      demonstrates. A great person inspires others to see for themselves –      Harvey Mackay
  • An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Hence the difficulty of forcing anything into an empty head – Eric Hoffer
  • Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care! Either case is a failure of leadership – Colin Powell

Open Your Eyes A  Open Your Eyes

Images – Open Your Eyes! – For Demonstration Purposes Only!

Apart from the devastations caused by typhoon Haiyan in especially Philippines – it was very interesting to watch the headline news in three different newspapers on the same day – and each one with different priority of what was meant for the headline side! Perhaps coupled with different focuses – and perhaps with view of their usual main Readers – and possibly I would not discount the way things are going nowadays of ‘their (hidden) agendas’ even!

Then we have some of the columnists who have not made a decision yet of which side to support – and move between sides as they go on – perhaps in trying to please everyone – and in the end perhaps none – as is the usual case! In one of the newspapers – they were saying why Oman is amongst the highest liked place by expatriates living in the countries – and according to the researched study index! They gave break downs and comparisons of the other places in the conducted research works down.

I guess anything good news for the country must go in capital headline news – but I am not too sure – seeing the other bits and pieces that do make their way sometimes – and it makes you think aloud of what is going on! If you will excuse the scepticism and cynicism!

In the other newspaper a great worry and concern is expressed why the young Omanis are still not interested in Private Sector jobs – and the continued rising trend of increasing lots of leaving their jobs for the preferred Public Sector jobs – or even just go without! This last part is really worrisome and scary – especially with the added bit of many of them being terminated for one reason or the other! The reasons are not explicitly given – and neither are the possible solutions to the crisis!

It reminds me of a long time ago British boss who told me point blank and without mincing his words – do not come to me with a problem – unless you have three solutions at least – and at least one is plausible and workable! He did not realise with whom he was dealing with at the time – because I gently reminded him that the problem was carefully analysed and researched by me – and could he please reread his emails? With the retort – I am quite busy now – and will eventually do so!

At least my conscience goes clear that I did my required job part in highlighting live the situation – and the rest is not up to me then! And whenever I did say this – it got them working hard – whether they liked it or not – because as the label went ‘he is the barometer of what is going on’ – and we do need not to ignore him – and our loss only!

That is how I became infamous popular – but if you have read my columns and books – I have blown my trumpet there many times before!

Especially in my Arab Management books Psychology of Arab Management Thinking! and A Cry For Help! – http://www.myownmajid.com. As aforementioned – I feel I have done my part as a loyal and faithful citizen – with great concerns, worries and priorities to see things ‘do not go’ wrong – and if they have – what to do about them! Anyway and as in many cases – I hate saying ‘I told you so!’

*** In one of the places that I had worked some time ago – this top personality was telling me this – Please open your eyes – and see! This after calling me to his place to put me in my place – because of highlighting situations that ‘it was more them that did not see – but anyway, that is another story for now! Only I learnt far later – that he had actually prepared a Termination Letter for me that day – but he was at least receptive when I told him what I had to say – and appealing to his conscience of ‘us both being citizens of the land – and for the sake of our children – and their children’s future!

I was also watching this programme in Al Jazeera Television of Inside Syria – and how each adversaries kept to their lines and stories – and each one believed he was completely right – and the other one completely wrong! Nothing has changed much – we still do the very same – and still have not learnt our lessons in life – and the teachings of mistakes and in history – even if we see live the disasters and devastations man-made – and even in typhoon Haiyan etc. Will we wake up and see?

The world suffers a lot. Not because of the violence of bad people, but because of the silence of good people – Napoleon

Any authentic work must start an argument between the artist and his audience – Rebecca West.

The US Review of Books connects worldwide Authors and Publishers with Professional Reviewers. It is an independent free running body – and the books and Reviewers are chosen at random order.

Pleased to inform you my Readers and Fans that my Arab Psychology Book has won the prestigious  US Gold Seal of Literary Excellency Award!

My books USA Trafford Publishers had sent me this note – which is very good news on my Arab Management book – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking! – Context and Perspectives. My book had won The Gold Seal of Literary Excellency Award – and was shortlisted for the prestigious Eric Hoffer Award.

The mere fact it had reached this stage – and competed against books from well known world Authors and Writers – and some of them being great Researchers, Professors and great Literary Artists is an achievement in itself – as it was my first Arab Management book! More information at www.myownmajid.com – I am pleased to share with you on our success!

MUSCAT, Oman – In his new book “Psychology of Arab Management Thinking: Arabian Management Series” (published by Trafford Publishing), author and analyst Majid Al Suleimany explores the management styles that he believes helped lead to the events of Arab Spring.

“This is a no-punch-held-back book,” Al Suleimany says. “It critically reviews and assesses with deep soul searching analysis the management styles and approaches of the Arab world, especially in Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) vis-à-vis the international companies operating in the international arena.”

        B - PsychologyUSA Golden Seal

An excerpt from “Psychology of Arab Management Thinking”:

“As Arabs work is worshipped in our Religion – so what went wrong here? Especially in Management circles? Why are we behind the rest of the world, despite all our riches, potentials and resources?

This is a no punch held back, no barrels held, no stiff, no frills play – but to be as blunt, frank, open, honest and sincere as far as possible – so the book can be a learning experience and process for this generation – and future to come – especially after the recent Arab Spring uprisings!”

Al Suleimany knows his book fills a critical need. “Little is known of Arab management styles,” he says, “especially as written from the inside by an Arab himself as an experienced professional local HR and management expert, advisor and counselor.”

“Psychology of Arab Management Thinking” – By Majid Al Suleimany

The Book Review – The book was reviewed by one John E. RoperUSA – Quote www.theusreview.com/reviews/Psychology-Suleimany.html

www.trafford.com/08-0889

“It is only by building on existing strengths, and moving forwards on established capabilities that economic maturity can be achieved and rising living standards maintained.”

Writers approach their craft with a variety of motivations. Some search for fame, others for fortune, and still others because spinning words together is one of the few things they are really good at. Some, though, write because what they have to say is burning inside them, and the only release is to share with others what has so inflamed their emotions. Such is the case with the author, whose passion for his people and his culture has driven him to speak out against the problems within Arab management practices so that, as he says, he can one day tell his grandchildren that by writing books he did something about them.

The author approaches his topic as an insider. Having worked extensively in the global business environment and in human resources in particular, both with Arab and international leadership, he has seen firsthand the shortsightedness, prejudice, paranoia, and autocratic tendencies of many Arab managers as well as the unfortunate fact that motivation and morale are frequently higher among Arab employees when someone other than one of their own countrymen is in charge. These observations have gnawed at him, and he questions not only why the situation within the corporate world is like this but also what can be done about it.

As an Omani, the Author offers great insight into his own country’s management issues, but he is quick to point out that many of the observations he makes can be applied to businesses throughout the Arab world. While the subject matter of this book will mainly appeal to readers approaching it from an Arab perspective, students of international business can also learn a lot from the author’s research – Unquote

What The Book Had Said!

As aforementioned, the book is about Arab Management issues and aspects – with personal experiences, exposures and examples of the Author stretching over 35 years experiences in Management and Human Resources – and as a Consultant, Advisor and Expert for over the past 10 years in a number of companies.

Continued – Author’s Note – For a long time now, I have been putting off the idea of writing this book – though it had been on my mind for a long time now. The mere idea of writing this book scared me to bits and pieces – for many valid and pertinent reasons.

I hope you will enjoy the book. I have tried to be as frank, open, forthright, honest, sincere and genuine as I can – as Readers who know me can give credence and credibility to me and will vouch and authenticate my works.

I have not spared myself, so there is just for it to be honest, sincere, genuine and hard hitting – sparing no one. Just No One!

** Thank you for informing me to collect copies of my Road Safety New Book (which still remained unsold after 3 months!) and as per the prompt to come and collect – like last time!

I hope you have removed the xxxyyzz shop price tags. I did not check last time you returned my books and gave them as Complimentary Gifts to VIPs.

I wish you all the very best with intrusion of Ebooks in the market and people can now order directly. Unfortunately the old ways of doing things in Oman are now having doors closing in slowly with the advent of time and latest developments.

Plus the sad fact that  there are book sites that offer more than 50000 free books to download. I paid 20 pounds in UK for one of the books only 5 years ago!

If I were in this business I would be very nice and kind to my Customers especially Locals because of changing times and people having long memories. You can see for yourself live now on TV that people are changing fast….even here sadly!

Again goodbye and all the best. Byee

Remarks – This is the sad fate of Local Authors who write in English – and for some who may consider some of his books to be controversial – thus not to be promoted!

Writing is the only profession where no one considers you ridiculous if you earn no money! – Jules Renard

This similar article was written in January 2005 – over 8 years ago! The mere fact that I am writing on the same topic now again – shows nothing much has yet changed that much!

It is commonly said – and repeated over and over againthat the person who really cares and feels for you will tell you the truth – even if you do not like to hear it being told to you! The person who keeps quiet – or goes along with you – even if he knows deep down that what you are doing is wrong and unethical in all accounts – is not your real true friend!

They also say in our Religion that we should not stop saying things which are the truth – even if it will hurt us. There are so many references in the good book and in The Hadith pertaining to this very same topic – and so many cases, examples and references given of our Great Prophet (PBUH) and other examples – rich in history too!

It need to be also said that if Truth was spoken – and people are prepared to hear and listen – and act on them too! – then the world would have been a safer more peaceful place – with more tolerance, co-existence, ‘live and let live’, and patience than now! Whether we want to accept this or not – or go for the ostrich head in the ground approach – it is our own business only – and no one else for that matter! The truth be said – without the necessity of always sugar coating – because the later too does not work either!

I have noted lately that there has been a great support for Arts and Paintings – but with the few exceptions of VIPs books – or books supported by VIPs including opening and launching sessions – the rest of us are still out there in the cold! Especially some of us that write in English as the easier language for us to do! And if you write on topics that people prefer to push under the carpet – or not to hear – then your situation becomes even worse! And that especially when you have compiled your works in books formats – and people can read easily – over and over again!

A few years ago when the poor girl I knew well in my HR Consultancy jobs died – with 9 members of her family in a tragic horrible accident – I was talking with her Manager and was inquiring about her – and why there was a great silence – and nothing coming from her in emails in support and nice comforting words. My emails were going to her – but the IT people there were themselves still in shock to remove her name from the mailing list!

1 - Being The Safe Driver - Front

Being The Safe Driver! www.bethesafedriver.com

It is true that many of us read the newspapers – or watch the television – of road accidents stories – but we never imagine that the victim in the tragic accidents – many are avoidable – is someone we know well! We never get involved personally in the stories and get emotionally inclined in touch and feelings! Perhaps if we made the attempts – or tried to do so – things could act out to be different! Perhaps only then road accidents could come down tremendously! I strongly believe in this – with the ever increased accidents and fatalities in the country!

When I self published on my own the Road Safety book – Being The Safe Driver! – Behind The Wheel! – and created the supporting website – www.bethesafedriver.com – I thought things would now be different this time! With exception of some few great companies of the land buying copies for their Board and The Management Team – nothing else went different! It was just the same stories – all over again! Reduce the book price – if I get OMR 2 in each book after costs publishing, air freight from USA and Bookshops commissions at 35% each book!

You would have imagined the Bookshops were the only winners – but even there ;you have to beg, borrow and steal’ to get your books taken in – unless it is for the publicity for the VIPs books – or books launches by VIPs! Poor M – a retired HR – no one knows him – and he has no W! Besides, why support and assist him – when his other books links – especially The Arab Management books that ‘rocked the boat to its very foundations’! So if we support his Road Safety book it would be like directly or indirectly supporting his other books per se!

I remember the famous nursery story of The Red Hen who went around asking others to help in growing seeds until harvest of the corn – but none did! When it baked the cake – and asked – who will eat from my cake? Everyone wanted a piece. I am sorry to say this – after the advices I get of ‘why don’t you translate the book into Arabic? You will get more Readers that way!

When I sent my appeal to them before the book publishing – they just ignored me and looked the other way! Thus my writing the article – Deafening Silence! You can see it here in my website! I should have learnt my lesson – after sending these VIPs my first books – including The Arab Management books specifically – but with the exception of very few expatriates – none even acknowledged even receiving the books – let alone in thanks!

Truthfully, I have never considered the business of writing as a business enterprise – or to make money! There is no money in books – and the returns – if any – are extended, tedious and belated too! But one needs to look things at the greater picture – and look things outside the box! Not everything is money in life! Otherwise today there would have been no great works like War and Peace – or the Shakespearean works! What is the added advantage if one’s works come out in fame – when he is invalid – or as many cases long time dead? Whilst he was alive he was unknown and unacknowledged – and miserable and poor!

I appeal to The Leadership to visit this arena too – and to (re) consider our cases more sympathetically and pragmatically! Especially those of us few that write in English! Even in the few competitions the insistence is works in Arabic – point taken – but communicating in other languages should be welcomed in! That is what and why Oman became great in history! Besides, not many are like yours truly – determined not to be let down – but keep his head up – and to succeed against all odds!

May Allah God Guide and Direct us to the right path and way – Amin.
