Abandoning The Sinking Ship!

Or That Corporate Leadership Failure In Times of Crisis!

Corporate Misgovernance and Bad Management!

The Case of The Stricken Luxury Liner Costa Concordia. The story is unique in that it was an Italian Cruise Liner – with an Italian Captain and mainly Italian crew and passengers that ran aground in an Italian island in Italian waters!

Maritime Authorities, passengers and mounting evidence pointed Sunday toward the Captain of the cruise liner that ran aground and that had capsized off the Tuscan coast, amid accusations that he  Francesco Schettino the Captain had abandoned ship before everyone was safely evacuated and was ‘showing off” when he steered the vessel far too close to shore. He was yet seen by Coast Guard Officers of ‘fleeing the scene’ even as the chaotic and terrifying evacuation was under way!

Images The Sunken Luxury Liner Costa Concordia

Authorities were holding Schettino for also suspected manslaughter and prosecutors had confirmed they were also investigating he had abandoned the stricken liner before all the passengers had escaped. According to the Italian Navigation Code – a Captain who abandoned a ship in danger can face up to 12 years in prison.

Image The arrested Captain Francesco Schettino

He was seen in a lifeboat covered by a blanket and well before all the passengers were evacuated and were just left to their own peril.  He had left before and was on deck before everyone was off. Though he was urged to return to the ship by Port Officials, he ignored them completely retorting – I did what I could! He failed to honour his duty to stay on board until everyone was safely evacuated – and he and his crew had ascertained this before leaving!  Initial investigations seem to reveal in addition significant human error on the part of the Captain!

Divers searching the murky depths of the partially submerged Luxury Liner Costa Concordia found the bodies of two elderly men still in their life jackets, bringing the confirmed death toll to five. At least 15 people were still missing.

We find the same story to a greater extent with last year’s boat ferry disaster in Zanzibar. Again the Captain and crew had abandoned ship and leaving passengers to their own fate – and the excuse we told the ship owners of the ship being over loaded but they still had refused to accept. Instead they were instructed to still carry more – or else! I do not know what is the excuse of the Italian Captain!

These kinds of things also happen in real life in The Offices – not necessarily only with the floating ones! The Captain of the Ship – The CEO, GM, MD or Director – will give instructions to be followed without listening to others in Management and Staff. Or he or she is so unapproachable to be given bad or troubling news – and would scream and shout at the messenger of bad news as his usual cover – or putting his head like that of the Ostrich! Or the person (or persons) giving the news would end to be the scapegoats or to be blamed when things will go wrong!

When things have gone really wrong – heads will fly and scapegoats found in order for the captain to remain supreme. Otherwise it will again be a case of abandoning ship – whilst the rest of the crew and passengers are still on board.

I do believe this is why there are a lot of deep resentment, frustrations, disappointments, demotivation, decadence and malaise in many establishments – but people still stick on and keep going – because there is no other way! And they have to feed their rumbling stomachs – and that of their families too! What else can they do? When people say hunger (the job!) is the cause of all evil – they know well what they are talking about here!

The Five Days Working Week! At My Workplace! 1

 At My Workplace!

The Five Days Working Week!

My theory – unless proven otherwise – still holds water that the increasingly frustrated people in the offices could perhaps explain the increased volumes of accidents and fatalities – and the tear and wear at the national and domestic home fabric!

Frankly with great shock and awe, I have noticed of the increasing ‘hot discussions’ going on now of the ‘five days working week – and the resistance to make any (further) changes based mainly on ‘increasing costs’ to the Companies by introduction of the ‘five days working week’ per se!

Truthfully, in some places like in Construction Companies – even the large ones for that matter – there is not even a one day rest but at best perhaps a few hours only rest in a day whilst the operations continue 24/7. That is where there is great resistance to change anything in favour of the employees – majority of them being mostly foreign Labourers and Non Skilled Workers – though it would not surprise me if it goes up to even middle and upper strata and echelons in the workforce even.

It is always the poor labourerexpatriates that get most hit and the general feeling is to keep ‘their minds fully occupied’ by nothing than only work and work – so that they have nothing else to think about – and after getting some food and rest!

You will excuse me for the strong language – but I have read that this is what also the Communists believe in! That is keeping the peoples’ minds occupied to get their food and shelter only – so they do not diverge out to other issues like asking for their rights and into politics! So it is queues and queues for bread – for food – you name it! Finally when the poor peasant has got it – he will be so dead tired to go and sleep – so he can get energies to stand in tomorrow’s queues all over again. If you have read also Animal Farm by George Orwell you will get the gist of my meaning here!

The most sad, ironical and tragic part is in my working career I had found the lower end expatriate working staff preferring to travel by airlines not of their own nations – because it is in the non-National Airlines where they get better treatment than from their own kind and home nationals – and there is lesser complaints of them being dirty, noisy and spoiling the toilets!

This also is the sad truth of how they get treated in the same way by their own kind in companies. I found this from real experiences of my own when I took over as a Human Resources Manager from an expatriate – and this labourer staff thanking me ‘to allow him to sit on the chair opposite my desk – Sir, I worked here for more than 18 years and today is the first time I am allowed to sit here whilst you are attending my case – and offering me tea too Sir!

I believe that what MOM Ministry of Manpower is doing now (Thank You!) is completely right, ethical, correct and professional by standing up to those Companies that do not want to change the 5 days working week – and if they want their staff to work extended hours and days they should be appropriately be compensated and be rewarded too accordingly!

It is ironical, sad and tragic that those big companies that profited greatly from contracts and projects in Oman – some major ones – are the same ones today making the strongest resistance to change – even for their own home nationals too!

As a National Human Resources Professional who strongly believes and practices greatly in correctness, ethics and professionalism – Yes I had indeed some issues and met the rawest treatment in interviews from such large construction companies! – But even without that – these poor people deserve a break too! Just like everyone else – Omanis and Non-Omanis alike!

Jobs For The Youth!

Not everything that glitters is gold! – Anon

A few weeks back I had said in my article We Need To Be Serious! – Quote – If you can circumvent the rules and regulations for your benefit – and the others are looking the other way – why not I ask you? Not only in that place but in so many other places too in Town! We Need To Be Serious!

But if even more senior jobs ‘reserved only for Omanis’ like Admin, PRO, Secretaries and Human Resources Managers are being done now openly by expatriates under fanciful names – why not? Incidentally and coincidentally if you go to the Professional Sites liked LinkedIn, you will see them brave enough to call themselves as just plain HR Managers – and nothing to be scared or to be afraid about!

I continued – Quote – There is something that I must also say and repeat here for the benefits of everyone – and I hope common sense, dynamism, realism, pragmatism and vision will come in!

First and foremost – there is no more this element of fear still running or even scantily – and secondly everybody is just fed up to the tilt!

And if you still think that the old games and gimmicks will still work in winning always – you have got it all wrong – and are just deluding no one but yourself only – and those near you! In desperation and last attempt and effort – last week I had written in the same column – Let The Strong Man Win!

Please do not tempt to scare me anymore now – because in the end we will all lose – some even sooner than the others! Perhaps I think I may need to quit now writing anymore for ever – because I always get hurt and pained in the end – and I end with a bloodied face – and swollen head banging it against brick walls! – Unquote.

Today Monday December 5th 2011 I was really elated and overjoyed as a son of the land to read this in the news – Quote Majlis panel to study status of job-seekers. New opportunities to be found … More Omanis likely to get jobs … – Unquote

Creating jobs for especially The Youth is a global dilemma and issue – and we find so many countries involved in this regard – and even some leaders like USA Obama directly involved personally in this. We see issues and aspects all over the Western World now – and we in The Middle East and rest of the world are catching up too!

In all my articles I raise the same issues and points – again and again. I strongly believe in this! In an interview with Oman Economic Review dated January 2000 (11 years ago) I think I gave very good advices to the Nation on aspects of Training, Development and Omanisation – titled Mind Matters!. The article is also reproduced here in my website above. I really wished that people had paid attention – and the same things I repeat in my two Arab Management books – www.majidbooks.com

A person who really cares and feels for you will tell you the truth and facts only – even if you will be cross and angry with him! And you may want to punish and hurt him – just because of his caring, feeling and sincerity towards the causes at hand – and you especially! But my articles Let The Strong Man Win – We Need To Be Serious – This Is Goodbye – are all demonstrative and examples of me now wanting to give up talking any further – and to join the Silent Majority as we will watch things continue to unfold in front of very eyes!

One thing that needs to be said also here – Communications does not have to be in Arabic only to pass on the theme and the messages – because sometimes even signals and body signs can do the trick in communications per se!

We especially the Arabs have this big issue that needs resolving. Apart from the usual rivalries, jealousies, polarisation and wrong judgments and stereotyping others, we fail to see, hear or simply speak – even if we have live examples just happened in learning and in lessons giving! And like in our histories – ‘killing the messenger of bad news’! And the usual approaches of some thinking they have ‘more rights than others’!

The point also to be made here – just because a person speaks fluent that Arabic is not necessarily that a most smart and intelligent person – and to be labelled as a really caring and feeling person either – and can even be an adversary and an enemy! They can do the most damage as the Israeli Arabs – for example as was in the Israeli army! And those speaking to us in English are not necessarily the opposite – or everything negative – to be ignored – and not to be heard. Allah Is Great – our nation is blessed with various experts and talents – all local too!

We need to wake up from the deep slumber we are (conveniently) in – now – than ever before – and before it is too late for everyone! Oman is a multi-racial and multi-ethnic society just like USA is!

Our destiny, legacy and future depend on it – and history and future generations will judge us by our actions – and also inactions!

Respects and Mutuality! At My Worplace! 1

For The Oman Daily Observer Features of Wednesday

My Website – www.majidall.com

 At My Workplace!

 Respects and Mutuality!

For people to respect you – you must respect yourself first!

Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers. — Isaac Asimov

The desire to write grows with writing. — Desiderius Erasmus

In all my articles I keep hammering on the same point and focus always – It is in the Offices and in Offices Dealings – where people are at their worst forms – and how they actually behave, act and interface with one and each other!

A long time ago a ‘good friend’ of mine ‘had joked with me’ that if  he had met Madam Wife (MW) in the Offices – as he was now doing – he would make sure that he ‘fought her’ for me – and that I was a (unprintable!) son of a gun! And I did not deserve ‘to politely put it’ to be so lucky! I wondered to myself aloud – if I had met his wife – and if I had told him the very same things he was telling me now – how he would behave and react?

But then his wife was at home cooking, washing, cleaning and raising his children – even though she was – as I had heard later – was an educated and qualified lady – but for him a woman’s place is only at home! No other place! The education and qualifications – according to him – was that she would be a ‘better mother and wife’ – and that is all that counts! The ironical and sad tragic part was that he considered himself as a ‘religious and pious’ person too – but can gravely insult one so easily!

A long time ago there is this ‘a sort of prominent and famous person’ – who had at one time wanted to buy my Consultancy business off me – and let his Indian GM run it for me – whilst I got a monthly dividend – but condition I had to stay at home! Look – he says to me – ‘This is real clean money with no headaches’ – What more do you need? I had refused – because I had wanted to be self-employed and do this thing myself only!

Some months later, when the business had just collapsed first with the drying up first of any further funds and support – a good friend of mine took me to his Offices with the W (Wastah – Influence) cap on to try to get his W for a job for me instead! That is why I am always cynical and sceptical of all these continued talks of being ‘self-employed’ per se!

He was quickly dialling and talking to someone on the loud speaker phone – Guess who is here in my Office now? Yes – it is him! He is looking for a job now! But I am not going to help him at all! Now he will see life in its reality!

The person at the other end was a woman whom I came to realise later was a family member – and that is how far betrayals and let-downs can go! I would have preferred him to say NO straight emphatically and directly to my face – rather than use this way of communications to me! For the rest of my life till they bury me deep in my grave – I have ‘forgiven – but will never forget’!

This is our problem in Oman – and still continuing and never ending! These people do not want any competition from any corners – even the small businesses – let alone SMEs! Actually they have already plates and plates of Biriyani and Pilauw – but they still want that sandwich on your small plate!

You will excuse me for the quote – but the East Africans have an expression that goes on like this – For a person to insult you – he does not have to choose his words carefully and wisely– anything lumped together and thrown to you quickly goes!

It makes all sorts to make this world – and if you want to maintain your health, sanity and faculties- then you must just go along and take the bitter pill – and in many cases just not sugared even!

 Dear Ami <Uncle>  Majid,

I am very sad to hear about the bad treatment you got in the job in Oil Company by our own peoples to say the least. I thought it was a new one but noticed later it was an old case but still does not change things.

Be patient Uncle. All those who have let you down and betrayed will have their punishment in this world first before they get the Adhaab Kabri <Punishment of The Grave> and Jahanaam <Hell Fire> next.

Please remain good and do not change or follow their steps.

My family will never forget you and the troubles you went through to get the job for my wife (Engineer SQU) and she was only getting administration clerical jobs only because she is a woman.

This is how bad we have become Yaraabi Starah <God Protect and Preserve us> Amin

Please keep IMAAN <Faith> n Allah <God> SWT <The Most Grateful and Merciful> only Uncle. Praying always for you Amin

IT IS TIME TO SAY GOODBYES!

A       Dear Majid,

Is it true you are saying goodbye to writing. If it is so, it is a shock to me.  Because I have been handling your column appearing in Observer. Now I can say with confidence that you have become a mature, confident writer.

In everyone’s life there is ups and downs, especially in a writer’s life. Many times people don’t take them seriously.  Some may say writers are eccentric; others may say he is a rebel.

Such adjectives are suffered by many writers; such is the world of letters.  You will be remembered somewhere in the world sometime even after you are gone, when people happen to see your book and your name.

As a friend my sincere advice is do not stop writing. ….. (Personal) … But keep on writing till you can raise your fingers and think clearly.

  Best wishes

J – The Oman Daily Observer

 B – Dear Dad;

I’m really sad and shocked that this is your last column, every time I have a chance to read them it gives me a sense that I’m part of a unique and precious moment, your articles are not only interesting but useful, delightful and better yet educational. I’m so honored and so happy every time I see that smiling picture of yours, the titles and one liner.

Pa you’ve not only amazed me and the family with that witty quotes, your sayings, your ideology and advisors but thousands and thousands all over Oman. It made you an intelligent, spontaneous and open book person who I look up to and say “That’s my Dad”.

I’ve never told you this before but a good friend of mine told me once “Dude I don’t want to be in your shoes!” I said why “You have a heavy burden on your shoulder… Following your big man shoes” and I replied “Maybe you’re right”, but it’s true it’s going to be a tough one, here I am trying to go above a line of a man who

 1.       Co-created and strong support of Omanisantion in PDO and other places

 2.       Help hundreds of Men and Women to reach goals that they never imagined they dream of

 3.       Build a company from scratch and <your proposals> helped to build the Biggest Company in Oman today

 4.       Have people calling every day for Human resource advices and training

 5.       To write 6 management and personal management books

 6.       To have 4 kids

 7.       And better yet as I always say “Always land on his feet”

You always amazed me and make me feel so proud to have your name after mine and for that I salute you.

 Wishing you all the best

 Your son….F

Just Say No To It! Reply

At My Workplace!

Just Say No To It!

(This Is The Full Version – Briefer in The Column)

Peoples take great pride and sadistic pleasures that they have said NO to someone. Especially if there is something particular or special that you do not like about that applying person. It is all subjective, personal, individualistic and selfish approach, not looking at the ‘bigger picture’ or putting blinkers on’ on the journey that you have set on yourself to reach, and you do not want to look at the greater picture. Or as they say – you cannot see the forest because of the trees.

 ***

This beautiful high profile lady was telling me – M, I see that you always get emotionally involved in the subjects that you write about. You know Writers – like Doctors – should not get attached and emotionally involved with their subjects (or patients that they are treating!). The problem is once you get emotionally and personally involved, it is difficult to look objectively at a given situation, and come with the right results and propose suggestions and recommendations that would hopefully be able to solve the problems on the issues that you have raised.

As a writer, you must be more objective and more as an observer (outside) on the issue that you write about! She is my greatest fan; surprisingly I am her fan too – because of her achievements in her career. I cannot believe that such a lady is still single, there must be something very wrong with us man, and perhaps hen-pecking is the order of the day nowadays. Perhaps too because the ladies were pants, just like us men do!

Then I get the other fans. They say – we really like the way you write about things – the styles, the approach, the format. You always quote by personal and self experienced examples (or from peoples you know well). Who said that writing was easy, even if it is more like a hobby than an income-generating thing? If you think writing is easy, try to write on something – for example on your hobbies or why you like some particular dishes.

***

Anyway, coming to serious stuff. Have you noticed the new trend, fashion and style in the market nowadays? It is to ‘just to pretend to use formal channels’ to say NO to any raised issue or expectations. Or as they say in the Management lectures long time ago attended – lacking vision and lacking helicopter quality!

Helicopter quality? I hear you asking. It is simple. Remember the Forest and the trees syndrome/ Well, helicopter quality is taking off upwards, and whilst the helicopter is hovering overhead, you can see the picture better from all way up. When I told the lecturer, isn’t there a danger by still going further up, you will loose a clearer picture and see the whole thing very small in comparisons?

The lecturer did not like that, worse when this ex-Army Pilot guy in the course (now in Human Resources!), said to all of us – you know how a helicopter flies? If you really knew, you would not go up in one (something about a pin – excuse me, I am not technical!). Anyway, he did not get to finish his sentences, the Lecturer was upset that ‘we were diverting from the main issue’, though the course was supposed to be on communications, and freedom and expressions etc!  That just goes to show you – you can have all the lectures and courses, but to change the outlook, approach and views of someone (because of these courses attended) is something completely different all together!

Now coming to what about saying NO, just for the sake and enjoyment of doing so, although you know deep in you and in your heart the situation studied in front of you best deserves ‘maybe’ or even a ‘yes, but with some stipulations and conditions!

In some many cases the ground works have already been prepared in advance in private and informal quarters to say NO! This is before moving to official and formal circles and venue. That is all how subjective, selfish, bad, evil and prejudiced some people are always

Ask us so-called Human Resources and Management experts. We have a book full of (magic) tricks and ‘fooling techniques’. Unless you are a smart Director or Manager, you will know the tricks of the game, and bring the writer (proposer) to his knees – and say – be serious, please study this case more objectively! How you are asking me that you can fool too to your boss? Simple. Blow out of the proportions the weak points of the case. Say if we do this, than this  (BIG) situation will develop if we are not careful.

Frighten them the more. Just say – as a Company employee who gets my salary (the only income you can add too – if you like!) from the company, it is my duty and responsibility to highlight (highlight? Is there a lowlight?) The issue. Kill the guy – add – personally I have nothing against this person (death is faster if you even add – I personally like him a lot. He is a good person (all kind of craps, easily reads between the lines by experts, but if you have a gullible unsuspecting boss – or one who knows the tune being played and goes along with it too!) – cannot be seen or be digested in actuality.

But what if you use your judgments based on outside factors (environmental, as the slang goes)? You judge a case by not the person in front of you, but whom he belongs to? Family, Social, Ethnic, Religion, race or Creed? Isn’t that a more worse crime and unprofessional and unethical thing to do? Crosses all borders and boundaries, but is still happening.

A 3rd world country President was lecturing to his countrymen. They had just gained Independence from a colonial power. He was afraid that they would not retaliate against their colonial masters. So he told this wolf and rabbit story. If you have heard it, allow me to just fill in the number of words for my column! So this President says – there was this wolf drinking some water in a river. He saw a rabbit, and he wanted to find an excuse to eat up this rabbit. So it yells at the rabbit – hey what are you doing? Don’t you see I am drinking the water here? Why are you spoiling it? The rabbit replied – but, Sir, the water is flowing from you to me. Then the wolf says – Yes, now I remember. Last week you insulted me, and then ran away. The rabbit meekly replies – but I was born only yesterday. The wolf now screams – well, if it was not you, than it must be your father. The rabbit replies – but my father has died long before I was born. Well, replies the wolf, if it was not your father, it must have been one of you, your uncle. Brother etc. Without giving a chance to the rabbit to say anymore, it jumps on the rabbit and eats it up! Let us not be like this wolf – that President said!

In the old Russian communist days (KGB), if a person was suspect, his whole family, string of friends and acquaintances were too on suspect. No one was spared. If you ran away from the country, they would imprison one of your own, usually closest to you! If they cut your phone, they also cut your whole family phones, even if it did not concern you, or you were not involved. If you did not pay your telephone bill, they cut not only your telephone, but your son’s too, or anyone else in the family – even if you paid yours on time. They just did not want to hear or listen. You all had to suffer the repercussions and consequences. If you lost favour, all yours lost favours too. Thank God communism has died. Or the wolf who wants to eat the rabbit syndrome.

Anyway peoples saying NOS always are known by all and everybody else – and why they do it is also known too!!

 What Is Happening Now?

Sad and Depressed Staff

Frankly, if you ask me in some of the workplaces it all looks like the way that they are run are more like in the Sandwich Shops – with such lack of professionalism, principles, accountabilities,
transparencies and ethics! People or so mean, selfish, devious and cruel!

People simply have had enough and they just want to leave – if only they can!! They just feel that staying on people would  just get them ulcers, depression and even heart attacks and other serious diseases – even early deaths – especially when seeing others being promoted prejudicially, biasedly, randomly and haphazardly – and one who used to be one’s subordinate before – is now your new boss – or going to be your boss in the organization soon!

So depressed and so frustated

I always do believe this – when peoples are turned off, unhappy and grumble in silence, quietness, pain and agony Allah God Takes Away Blessings in anything in life – even in your own home – so why not in a Company made up of many homes too? Maybe that can explain the disinterests and disquiet – demotivation and disenfranchisement – and the reduced productivity, outputs and incomes generated!

Ask the BIG QUESTION – why are people who cause all this are still allowed to stay on that act like Dictators? Because they serve a purpose – like Saddam Hussein did at one time? He was useful to the extent of serving a purpose  – same as just to fight those not towing the line as the company perhaps wanted or intimated – or could be the games and gimmicks played to please ‘The Masters’ – or played in The Master’s Voice (gramophone!).

Why Are They Doing This To Us?

People leave to go back to home countries and or to other places as a very frustrated, unhappy, miserable and sad sort of individuals – after giving their long years of their lives and sacrifices – and of their families – and their waylaid dedication, loyalties and commitment. They are suffering and victims now – because in their own ways in wanting to be ever good, principled, genuine, honest, sincere and faithful! That is all that they had desired and wanted in the first place!

Because,  if this was followed through the right ways and means – the place would end up to be much more a Happier Place To Work, An Equal Opportunity Employer, and A Place of Choice to Work etc. And happy and motivated faces all around!

People just forgetting in looking at the Bigger Picture, Thinking Outside The Box and being able To See the Trees from the Forest.

And to avoid bigger possible more problems and particularly in corporate and in family as a result social disorder and breakups – and as being constantly being seen nowadays!

People are still being pushed around,  ridiculed, insulted, ruled and controlled with an iron hand – and being always monitored – with the famous expression of Divide and Rule (Conquer) per se!

Especially, as at the Top Management and Brass are the usual cronies and the usual docile Yes-Men, and the top spies and the favourites of the big bosses. The thin line between good and evil has been crossed over many times – and by many people too. It seems to be the in-thing to do nowadays – by everyone and everybody – and nobody wants to be left behind anymore in joining the bandwagons!

When will people ever learn?

People are just tired. That change has taken place and the old tricks and gimmicks do not work anymore? People in corporate high places should take in their due roles, accountabilities and responsibilities more seriously – with more ethics, principles, fairness and justice. Things cannot be allowed to go on forever like this way – something gotta give – there is a break-up point – and nothing in life is a surety and permanent – as we all see live in the news and television
everyday!

At My Workplace!

 Equal Opportunity and Pay!

It is all so easy and there is always this tendency to always criticise and blame others in life – but we always do forget about ourselves in the equation and in doing so! We find scapegoats in others’ behaviours, attitudes and approaches to cover ourselves – that we are perfect, right, correct, ethical, transparent and professional – when in truth and reality we are not!

I was watching this film – Made in Dagenham a 2010 British film that dramatises the car company Ford (UK) sewing machinists strike of 1968 that aimed for equal pay for women. It
all began in the Ford motor plant in Dagenham where women workers, originally disgruntled about a new pay scheme that classed them as unskilled, finally took umbrage at the fact that they were paid far less than their male counterparts for doing the same work. The plot starts with the main character  one Rita O’Grady leading the 1968 Ford sewing machinists strike at the Ford Dagenham plant – where female workers walk out in protest against sexual
discrimination and the desire for equal pay.

It is successful and leads to the famous UK Equal Pays Act 1970 – though it shows the hardships and the repercussions of families – and as a result of the strike. The shocking part for me was the attitudes and the approaches of the head offices executives of the company
threatening an executive Minister of the state (herself a woman!). They were ready to close down the factory rather than giving in to the women strikers – and that they will move the factory to ‘other places where they will be appreciated instead’!

The film had very bad memories for me in many aspects. It reminded me that even our very own peoples do not appreciate and value us equally compared to others outsiders – and not with the local talents, expertise, skills, innovation, abilities and capabilities. That was the main reason for the collapse of my consultancy firm when the international contractor was paid three times what we were paid – yet the work was split in half – and we handled the junior levels where there were more miseries and problems.

Yet still in our jobs of Human Resources we always still find this discrimination in payment of salaries – despite those that do practise these continuing calling themselves as still righteous decent correct ethical and professional peoples – which is the more shocking part! Comments like he is from such and such a place – and that salary is too high for them – even their CEOs at home do not get paid that much! Or even if an experienced and qualified local – ‘take it or leave it’ offer – but not for others in the equation.

As a Human Resources official you have two choices – go with the orders and instructions given – or be ready to be sidelined and be marginalised if you raise any protests or stand up to be counted – or even be ready to move out and or leave! And if you go along without any remorse, compunction, conscience or guilt – the rewards are very forthcoming! Why worry about God now – you will only meet Him when you die – and that will still be some time to come yet!

It is not only this – but there are still some ‘Old Guards’ still found in some quarters – in both locals and expatriates – that would think twice – if not more times! – of recruiting the ladies in non-traditional roles reserved for them at the workplace in jobs like in Administration, Secretarial, Nursing, lower ends in Accounts and in Finance, and in Hospitality etc! A woman doctor? A woman engineer? A woman CEO? A woman head in anything (big)! You must be joking! Please be serious, man! Take your job more seriously! What is wrong with you? Ironically, the man has daughters at home – sisters too – that he surely would not want to be
discriminated against!

As I had said  before – the film has still very bad memories for me! Take Care!
