Ordered to pay RO 8 million fine; 2 others sentenced –

By Zakaria Fikry –

MUSCAT — The Court of First Instance in Muscat yesterday sentenced the CEO of Oman Oil Company (OOC) to 23 years in jail, a fine of RO 8 million and ordered him to be sacked from his post permanently in connection with the Sohar Aromatics case. The second accused in the case — who is a former adviser to the ministry of national economy — was awarded 10 years in jail, a fine of RO 4 million and deportation for a life-long after severing his term.

The third accused — CEO of South Korea’s LGI Corporation — was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of RO 4 million as well as deportation for a life-long after serving his jail term. The court also ordered the restoration of $8 million to the public treasury and that the defendants settle the litigation.

Last December the Public Prosecution accused the CEO of Oman Oil Company with abuse of office, accepting bribes from LGI to facilitate a $1.6 billion pact for construction of the a petrochemical aromatics plant at Sohar industrial port for the Korean firm. In return the defendant took $8.4 million in bribe which he deposited in a Swiss bank. The defendant was convicted of exploiting his position for personal interests, bribery and money laundering

The second defendant was convicted of taking bribes and the third — Korean national CEO of LGI Corporation — was found guilty of offering bribe to procure the contract.

Omani CEO jailed for 23 years in graft case: Court

(Reuters) –

A court sentenced the CEO of state-owned Oman Oil Company to a total of 23 years in jail on Thursday for accepting bribes, abuse of office and money laundering, the most severe punishment meted out in a series of corruption trials that began last year.

The judge at the Court of First Instance in Muscat also convicted Adel al-Raisi, a former aide to the minister of the now-dissolved economy ministry, of organizing a bribe made by a senior official at a South Korea-based firm to Oman Oil Company CEO, Ahmad al-Wahaibi, and sentenced him to 10 years in jail.

The court found the vice CEO of the Korean-based LGI, named in court as Myung Jao Yoo, guilty of paying $8 million to a Caribbean-registered company owned by Wahaibi after winning a billion rial petrochemical project in Sohar Port in Oman.

Myung was also jailed for 10 years. LGI was not immediately available for comment on the court’s verdict.

Oman’s Sultan Qaboos has waged an anti-graft campaign to defuse mass protests in several Omani cities in 2011 that were mainly directed against graft and to demand jobs, issues that fuelled uprisings around the Arab world in the same year.

More than 20 civil servants and businessmen have gone on trial in Oman since last year.

Court documents said the latest case dated back to 2011, when Omani authorities were informed by their Swiss counterparts about suspicious transactions involving Wahaibi’s Swiss bank account. The trial began in December last year.

Oman Oil Company is an investment arm of the government of Oman with over 40 investments inside and outside Oman.

Wahaibi admitted in court to receiving money from Myung but pleaded not guilty to the charge of taking bribes, saying he “didn’t know why LGI transferred $8 million” into his company.

Raisi also pleaded not guilty. He said his confessions during questioning were not genuine

and that he only admitted brokering the deal and receiving the money under pressure.

Myung admitted in court that he had received money from Wahaibi but said he did not remember why. “Maybe it was a birthday gift. I don’t remember,” he told the court.

Apart from the prison sentences, Raisi and Myung were each fined 4 million rials. Myung would be deported after serving his sentence, the court ruled.

Oman Oil Company said in a statement it was committed to “enforcing a stringent code of ethics and corporate governance practices across all levels of the organization”.

Its Deputy CEO, Mulham Al Jarf, said he was given the “rights, responsibilities and authorities of the CEO in August 2013 to ensure that the business operations of the company remain uninterrupted,” the statement added.

At the hearings, Wahaibi admitted that after the cash was deposited into the accounts of his company, he had given the two other defendants their shares of the cash.

The court sentenced Wahaibi to 10 years in jail and fined him 4 million rials ($10.39 million) for accepting bribes, 10 years for money laundering and one million rials and three years in prison for abuse of office.

The court also confiscated all the bribe money in his frozen Swiss bank account. Lawyers confirmed Wahaibi’s sentences would run successively.

Life at the crossroads!

It is not the strongest of the species that   survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change – Charles Darwin
History repeats itself because man is   incapable of learning from experiences! – George Bernard Shaw

After Compliments;

I do not know about you but I have recently found that at whichever turn I take now I do meet people that are not good nor sincere people in life that will make promises but not keep – and will purposefully and willfully annoy and upset you with bad hearts and intentions! They are the same people that would easily land you in great distress and troubles if it will suit them – and there are simply no red lines or barriers.

People that are proud and conceited – and even if they know they have done something purposefully wrong to you will Never Apologise – but smirk as you squirm and fidget.

People that will put fingers in your eyes – and expect you to not fidget and remain calm!

People that are moving us into polarization, divisions and splits – and abuse our hospitality, respect and welcome – because they see us divided, polarized, weak and docile!

People that are purposefully and willfully rude, arrogant, mean, vicious and dastardly!

Something gotta give – or break at anytime – like the cinder fire burning heatedly underneath before it surfaces – and explodes in our faces!

People that will judge and criticize you without knowing all the facts and the truth – because it suits them – or just do not care or bother!

It seems it is the in-thing fashionable thing to betray and cause harm and destruction as just being The Norm for many of them!

But the worst kind are those people that can help you in your plight and situation – but choose not to and not to be bothered! Why rock the boat? And what for?

Day by day things are getting worse – and even those people that were once considered nice and helpful are joining the bad and nasty group – with no scruples or conscientious objection.

We simply need to self analyse our selves and in deep conscience before we enter the cesspit of only more decay, decadence and malaise!!

Perhaps it is the age thing or depression setting in – or simply having been beaten many times before one has become sensitive and small things that never upset and annoy you before now do!

Perhaps being diabetic is also a contributory factor!

What do you think? Have you any views to share with the rest of us? Why are people so proud and conceited that only they are important and the rest are not! That they are only ones that are correct, ethical, principled and professional – but the rest are not!

It is not only outsiders but goes now with so-called friends, relatives and even family members too!

People that enjoy seeing others in troubles and distress – or enjoying putting them in troubles and distress.

No one cares or bothers anymore – and Religion has just become ‘a fashion’ – but not to put your soul, heart and mind into it!

And Yes! We do see things Live on Television how small things with bad hearts have turned so bad and led them to great disasters and calamities – but we ado not care nor bother – as if nothing can happen or touch us!

Allah God have mercy on us!

Very sad and tragic!

May Allah Have mercy on us and Guide us to the right path and way – Ameen Amen

Take Care!

Talking of Corruption?? Nigerian Oil Fraud!

  • Need to be careful people do not feel of ‘a witch hunt’ or a mouse trap! The mouse trap caught everyone except the mouse the trap was set for!

I have covered this particular topic widely and intensively in my columns – See some examples below! –

Nigeria – President Goodluck Jonathan accused internationally respected career banker Lamido Sanusi of “financial recklessness and misconduct,” and officially suspended him just days before the governor reportedly planned on stepping aside.

The West African nation’s naira currency immediately weakened in response.

Last year Sanusi reported that $50 billion worth of oil sold by the state’s Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. had not been paid to the government. The Senate Committee on Finance last week ordered an independent forensic audit into the missing money, now said to amount to about $20 billion. The Finance Ministry said missing receipts recovered in an audit accounted for the rest of the missing money

The Mouse Trap Story! 1

Mouse TrapMouse Trap 1

The Mouse Trap Story!

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. “What food might this contain?” the mouse wondered. He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning: “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.”

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The pig sympathized, but said, “I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.”

The mouse turned to the cow and said, “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The cow said, “Wow, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but it’s no skin off my nose.”

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer’s mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house – like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever.

Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. But his wife’s sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn’t concern you, remember, when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life.

We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another. Each of us is a vital thread in another person’s tapestry.

Sir – We are with you always!

Yesterday night a group of us good getting together friends were having a meal at this Arabian Restaurant in Ghobrah and the subject starting moved to your columns articles. And your call about more Omanis to be needed represented in the especially English press and media as it is now being controlling and dominated by Indian people mainly and also some British peoples.

You also called for more stronger quality powering Omani Managers in the Press and media. Believe me Sir that people mistake us to be not knowing and not smart people and they can fool and play with us. But if they cannot learn than they will never learn in future. We are not stupid peoples. We aware and knowing too.

So Ustaadh please rest now. You have said it but they ignore you and not listen. You have done your job and duty as few Omanis that really care and feel. You take rest because you are now done and take rest Sir. Look after family only now.

Do Not Push Your Children To Suicides!

I was reading the article below *** and as a parent of also three daughters – two being twins – my heart cried out for the poor parents now terrible anguish and suffering after this has happened to them – and their lives will never be the same again – especially if the girl was the only child!

In an Islamic Hadith (Story) I read about our Great Prophet (PBUH) scolding a father of a child who was ridiculing openly his child who had urinated on the Prophet’s dress. The Great Prophet told him off saying that there was nothing big about it all as the offender was just a child – and what kind of a future the child would have if he was openly continuously being ridiculed like this in front of everyone?

This is the point that I want to make here!

Crying Girl

Do Not Make Them Cry – To feel worthless!

In all my over 13 years duration but now expired columns in Between Us Only! in The Oman Daily Observer – and those who are my Readers and Fans will authencicate – I have continuously strived to write about Parenting, Family importance and values! You can even find so many articles in this same very website about this!

A long time ago a very close friend and confidante had told me how he had at one time planned to commit suicide by similarly jumping from a high towers in UAE after his business went bust – and he was facing many problems – mainly legal and court based in Oman. It seems to him that people are less tolerant and patient for trying to go into business and being self employed – and all the SMEs support rhetoric still going on now 30 years later to no avail or takers!

See my article – Why They Do It? – www.betweenusonly.com

In that night he had a dream of his late father coming to him and telling him ‘that things will be okay – and next day he received a good job offer that made him to be able to sort out his problems. The only thing that had saved him is his sister noting something was amiss – and the man had similarly locked himself in with his ‘suicide note’ on the dressing table!

Another friend of mine had caught his teenager son about to jump from top of his villa after he was continuously and repeatedly being scolded for ‘failing grades’! The boy had even tied a brick around him – and in order to make the fall faster and more grave! He caught the boy just in time after reading his suicide note in the boy’s room. The part that still eats him saying ‘Please forgive me for disappointing you my parents’! The boy today is an executive in a large national firm – just imagine!

Lady Diana Spencer had also said – Family is very important. See also My Own FM Radio Interview here! – http://myownmajid.com/2014/02/08/my-own-fm-radio-interview/ @@

People should learn from others (mistakes) and I urge you once again to pay more attention and care for the children and the family – like I said in my Oman FM Radio interview – what is the point of having more money when the family is disintegrating in front of your very eyes?

14 year old Indian Schoolgirl jumps to death in Dubai

Dubai Towers

*** A 14-year-old Indian schoolgirl jumped to her death from the 17th floor of a Dubai tower after her father scolded her for cheating in an exam, local media reported Monday.

A cleaner alerted police after he found the girl’s body lying on the ground in the Jumeirah Lake Towers neighborhood, Khaleej Times reported.

Police investigators found that a teacher had caught the girl cheating in an exam and warned her that she would be expelled if it happened again.

At home, her father scolded her when he found about the cheating incident, the paper said.

“Her parents told us that when she returned home, she was distraught and very upset. Her father, who came to know about the cheating, also chided her. She went to her room and locked the door,” the daily cited a police officer as saying.

The parents only found out about their daughter’s suicide when police informed them.
