Between Us Only! The Sequel – Three! has been adapted from Majid Al Suleimany’s successful newspaper columns in The Oman Daily Observer. Utilizing the very best work from the columns he penned over the past four years, Al Suleimany touches on a wide variety of vital and riveting topics. Yet Between Us Only! The Sequel – Three! is not without controversy. For readers who wish to study Arabic (and Islamic) approaches to the Middle East, the West, and other religions, the book makes excellent references relating to the post-September 11 world. The increases in religious fundamentalism and radicalization in society, and the fact that many youngsters are on board with these aspects, are also taken to task.

The author, through his writings, offers up a tome that is part prayer and part preaching, desperately hoping for a change in the world that will produce a new and more positive direction. “Live and let live in peace, harmony, and co-existence,” is Al Suleimany’s mantra.

Being all alone at home now – that is most of the times – one can be really surprised of how many ideas you can get for your columns – by simply watching the Television set – because it is supposed to depict the realities and facts on the ground – whilst you watch the unfolding scenes from the comfort of your cosy reclining chair – without a care or mind for the rest of the world – but you and the television set only! It is really amazing how many things one can still learn from this television set on human dramas, vanities, foibles, and malaise – and all over the places now!

I have now compiled all my works into two new different books – which are now under publication – including the Road Safety Novel book – Behind The Wheel! – www.bethesafedriver.com This is one’s man keen interest, drive and objective to get involved in – and write about in Road Safety as his contribution to the society. My other two books carry all the articles – post earlier Between Us Only! series. There is this beautiful programme about Cyprus – Island of Forbidden Love. The programme looks at what happens when romance cuts across religious lines amongst mainly Lebanese couples. According to legend – the island of Cyprus is known as the ‘birthplace of Aphrodite – the Greek goddess of love’. When love crosses the religious divide – Cyprus becomes a favoured destination for many Lebanese couples – seeking civil unions and marriages! One of those men being portrayed laments – Sunni, Christian, Druze, and Shia – we are in it all together – and there is simply no sect in love!

I have now also a lot of time for reading – and that includes rereading my own five books – all over again! Not to blow my own trumpet – sometimes I wonder if it was all done by me! But I guess when you are angry and sad too at the same time – and you speak truthfully from your own heart to others – there should be no surprises – what comes out here!

I also read in detail the newspapers and the magazines that I subscribe too! One of the jobs that had crossed my mind was to be a Counsellor – Advisor – Psychologist – or as they are sometimes referred to in pun as ‘Shrinks’! In one of the distress columns, I have noticed that we tend to ignore the problems being faced by the Expatriate communities in our midst – in their strive and struggle to adjust to our ways and lives – and to make meaningful and worthwhile their continued stay here.

I, for one, need to be frank to admit that I have not really paid full attention to their distress and plights in my concentration focus for jobs and employment for the youth – their training, recruitment, placement and development. Like most of us, we seem to wrongly think that they are here to take our jobs – our own youth – and to deny us entries to what should come – rightly and naturedly – to us – and in our desires and wishes for our own destiny, legacy and future – as future generations will judge us – and history too – on what we do now – or not do – and or advertently and or in inaction!

Every day we hear on some expatriates that have committed suicides – because they cannot take it anymore. I have said this too in the past. In one of my weakest moments in life when things did not seem to work – and everything was going against me – family included – I thank my God and my Religion – because it stopped me from doing really nasty and unexpected things in life. I now realise that I did put wrong emphasis and priorities on the wrong things in my life – rather than as my late good Mother used to tell us – peace be upon her – First is Always You! Then You! Then You Again. Then Others….let them make their own queue to you!

I am giving the same free advice to the especially expatriate wives that write in to the Marriage Counsellors and Advisors – about the problems that they face with their spouses. Few even to me! In many of the cases, the marriages are arranged – and the husband – has not given enough impetus and importance to get to know well his wife – his children even – and what she likes – what she does not like – and what makes her tick – or not! They live in the same house – though married to each other – but as complete strangers!

Mistakenly like most of us men – and with some exceptions – even some women like football – whilst the men watch dramas! We just think that bringing in the money is all important and only counts – if here – or worse scenario – send to homes across borders. In one of the Hindi films – I forgot the name – the wife was lamenting – You think bringing in the checks is all that counts – what about me? Do you think of me? Maybe the children – but certainly not me!

Frankly, there are many expatriate ladies out there that are really qualified experienced professionals – as I found when I still had my Consultancy years ago. In some cases – if they were working they could earn even three or four times the take home pay of their spouses! Sad this avenue and resource is not tapped into! Yet the husbands think still pleasing the boss – in many cases expatriates too – by staying in back ‘for artificial deceptive pretense invented works’ is far better than after looking at his wife – and even the children.

No wonder the poor ladies write in – even if anonymously – because they just had enough – or about too! When they start thinking of committing suicides – because of the phobia and dread of returning home to their families away from the husbands – then something has got to give. Like I always say – what is the point of having more money, promotions and statuses – when things fall apart – and break up in front of you? Money is not everything – family, humanity and values are!

 At The Workplace! – Outlook!

The Month of Forgiveness! 

  • Indeed the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah (God) is the one with the most Taqwa (Righteousness/God Consciousness) – Surah Hujaraat – 49.13.
  • Allah’s special mercy comes on the families (nation) that are united, harmonious and peaceful – especially in Taqwa and in the Fasting Month – The Hadith.

This Ramadhan I got a nice message for the month from one person. The number was not registered in my Mobile – but I decided to accept the nice message and send one back in reciprocity! Unfortunately, the person decided ‘to spoil it all’ by asking me if I really knew from whom the message came from? And asking me to ‘keep trying to guess’! I politely declined ‘the offer’ – and had decided to just register the person as ‘Sender Good Ramadhan Message’!

That was not enough for the person – because he did not give up! I guess the reason was ‘he or she thought I would be very much surprised to receive this kind of message from him! It seemed to me that the person ‘was keen to be found out’ – so we can take it off from that level! But if you are not telling – who am I to push you to come forward and tell me?

It dawned on me that this could be a person that I had crossed with and upset in the past – and he is making a subtle move to come forward – and say it in his own ways and styles!

The day before Ramadhan we had a family get together – because it was a long time since we had one together as one whole family – and also to celebrate some of the children finalists good examination results – and one or two who had got promoted – and of course with a new car to show the rest of us too – with the old bangers going over 7 years now – and cannot afford a new one still yet!

Frankly, I try to be ‘my level best’ in these types of social gatherings nowadays – and just to show you how bad things have now become in society – because definitely there will be one or two determined to get you pissed off and upset – for just some rice and morsels – and make the rest of your day to be upset and to be annoyed!

 

The thing that they can easily find fault to upset and annoy you is in your passion of writing – and nitpicking minor things to be made mountains from molehills on a driving pursuit and purpose to do their bit. They like to call it as ‘constructive criticism and feedback’ – but if you ask him to explain himself clearly in more details – than just the one sentence or two he picked out of context – he fails miserably!.

But then he will say to you that you are now becoming over sensitive – and the age element has definitely kicked in – for you to behave like this way! The question to ask here – if this can come within – who needs enemies outside? A famous Arabic expression says – rightly too! – A thousand enemies outside the house are better than one within! 

Things have gone so bad nowadays – because at Family get-together times even – you get people – after years and years of being sidelined and being marginalized – have now received promotions that have gone to their heads – being contemptuous, cynical, satirical and pompous! Looking down on others the lesser lucky and fortunate in life! 

Like I always like to say – a few more Baizas has changed the person completely – in an adverse – and negative way! That is why if I am not invited to any social gathering nowadays – it is not ‘sour apples’ – but honestly – I feel that the person has done me a good deed indeed! 

A friend of mine had sent me this saying – which I will share with you! The most testing time for a woman is when her husband has gone poor and broke – and for a man is when he has become rich and famous! He gives me his own life story as proof of what he is saying here – when he became astute poor –and with losing his position and job! With children even – and or no children either! 

So I messaged to the person – There is something that you perhaps do not know about me! I always try my level best to avoid conflicts as much as I possibly can! I also can promise you that I never cast (throw) the first stone either! But after cautioning you after several trespass and interferences – I can turn nasty to even shock you! I then come down charging – like a bull in a glass shop! Admittedly, some may even say – his reactions outdo his silence and patience at the outset. Taking it from the 90/10 principle of reacting to situations! 

As a Writer, Author and Columnist – I will be naïve and stupid not to realise that I have upset and annoyed people – and will continue to do so – so long as I keep writing on in my life! Even if I decide to stop – I will upset those who want me to continue – and even write much more than before! Like Louis IV had said – Whichever side I take or whatever I will do, I will still be blamed by the other side! 

In all my life and in my pursuits – I have always aimed to change the things I can do so by myself if I can do so – and if not – speak or write about it! In weak moments – yes – I have gone to the lowest levels in Religion – of saying – I am against this – but I am afraid – and have now joined in silence the Silent Majority! 

Like the unfairness and injustice being faced now by me – but there is nothing that I can do on my own – though have talked about it several times in my columns here!

In the spirit, graciousness and kindness of the Holy Month – I ask for forgiveness for those that I may have upset and annoyed – and even by default and inadvertently! I still believe to speak the truth always as I see it – and ready to change my mind if shown and or convinced otherwise! 

But I also feel deep in my heart and in conviction – body and spirit – that only a person that really cares, feels and does not want ‘things to go bad and or wrong’ – will tell you exactly what he thinks – for the general good, remedy, corrections, peace, harmony and for future generations, history, legacy – and for our destiny too. In that way you will forgive me too – for I will hardly change!

  • Sometime ago when I was in my lowest of depressions and frustrations in life – a good German friend of mine had sent me the following message – which I will share with you today! He just said – Quote – I must say that some of your mails hit the nail right on the head – and I really enjoyed reading them. Some have been too ‘emotional for the “German” Reader’. I don’t think that you should give up now! Why would you ever give up a passion?

 If you marry a woman, you start loving her passionately, she is giving you the greatest gift a man can receive- kids, she is there for you as your wife, friend, advisor, mother, sister and not to forget as your passion. Can you imagine waking up one day and telling her: I don’t love you anymore passionately?

 No, because passion is a value that you cannot loose or give up! Don’t give up writing. Take a break, take a deep breath and rediscover your passion. Love your passion as you did the first day, as passion is a part of you and you need it. Take care my friend! – Unquote.

 A good Indian old friend of mine said the same words to me – which I will also share with you - Quote - In everyone’s life there are ups and downs, especially in a writer’s life. Many times people don’t take them seriously.  Some may say writers are eccentric, others may say he is a rebel. Such adjectives are suffered by many Writers, such is the world of letters. 

You will be remembered somewhere in the world sometime even after you are gone, when people happen to see your book and your name. As a friend my sincere advice is do not stop writing – and just do not give up now – out of all times! – Unquote.

 In the Holy books, we have read of how even Great Prophets like our own Great Prophet (SAW) and Moses (Prophet Musa – RA) in few weak times of their lives went despondent and despairing – at one or other times in their lives.  And then we have other Great Prophets like Jacob (Ayoub) and Joseph (Yousuf) – who suffered against great odds and trials in life – but did not give up faith in God always! Records and History books are full of other great men and women in life that went similar.

 

The Author and His Books

Although writing for me is my hobby – since I was 14 years old – my passion and the motive in keeping me going on in life – it was not my first ambition in life. I had always wanted to be a Pilot first and paramount – writing and journalism came a clear second! But I never knew I had eyes problems till when I wanted to join the Air Force in that distant land – for Pilots being trained in Canada.

 I had ended – after my studies in UK – to join as a Human Resources Professional – in that oil company. The rest that happened after opting out for early retirement – going into a bust business – and what started as a weekly columnist 9 years ago to a full fletched author of five books – two being in Arab Management – and the 6th one near completion on Road Safety Stories (Novel Type) now!  What started – as an ambition to be a Pilot – had ended up to be something else. I guess there are could be also retired – or still flying – Pilots out there – and who are now as avid Authors and Writers too! God – how I envy them – getting the best of two things that you really had wanted in life?

 My pretty Indian Literature Lecturer in High School told me – a great Miss F from Goa –  Life is like a stage!. Sometimes we are endowed with roles and characters that we had never aspired to. But the best thing that you can do – and a great credit to yourself – is to play that role well! You are very right – Miss F!

The Changing Life Ways!

On Thursday this week my family and I had celebrated my 64th birthday.

A simple thing – and all at home – with my family members only! The thing that moved me the most is to see my grandchildren singing this special Arabic song for parents for me! It was followed by a Happy Birthday song in English. For a few minutes, I felt just like the VIPS that would feel in a grand parade! Coming to their generation, some did put in compliments in Facebook. Also some messages came in via Twitter – and in the professionals’ website of LinkedIn.

The point to make here is this. I had covered this topic in my second Arab Management book titled – A Cry For Help! The book was published in February 2009 – well before all the troubles and problems came to our side of the world. Some had said to me that the book was a sort of prophesy, omen and prediction of what was going to come ahead – and that more people at least in decision making and the leadership should have read the book!

It was not my mistake – but I did send the book out – and to try to make the distress call in crying for help! Would things have really have changed if more people had read my book? Personally, I do not think so! Just see the things still happening now – even after just poor Mubarak was sent to a life-term jail sentence! And even after all the other things before that. We are very good ‘and blessed’ in being just indifferent and care-the-less – and with a very short memory span too!

We still have not learnt that threats – and trying to put in trouble one – will only be short-lived – because once things like this have started – there is nothing that can stop or prevent the trend from continuing – till it goes full cycle and till completion. This is not a washing machine – which you can just switch off the machine to stop it going full cycle. Or as has been said – what goes around – does come around – even if it may take longer time to do so!

Whatever one may feel, still this Mubarak was an Arab presiding leader being sent to jail! I could not help feeling sorry for him – despite all the things that have happened – when for two hours he refused to get out from the helicopter that was sending him to jail – and crying uncontrollably and profusely that ‘you are all now sending me to jail today – and have forgotten all my contributions and so on stuff’! The crunch being how things can turn nasty and unpredictable in life’s pursuits!

Keep remembering that the incident quoted here in my book was over 4 years ago! In the Introductory Chapters, this is what I had written – Quote –

It then struck me how fast and how much things have now changed in The Work Front – especially in relationships between Omanis (Locals) and Expatriate Staff – especially Non Muslims – and how much the gap was widening between the two – though acting and pretenses continued of politeness, courtesy and welcome.

There was now growing extremism, fundamentalism and radicalisation in the workplaces that I had never seen before – especially here where I had always prided myself that we were a tolerant, moderate, give-and-take, live-and-let-live society and always kind, welcoming and accepting esteeming and respectful to our ‘invited guests’ in our country!

My simple error – if you call it that – to invite non-Muslims to the Mosque (Masjid) seemed inadvertently to expose the inevitable differences etc. – unwanted and uncalled for – and I think unneeded differences – to come out and show its ugly head!

However, two months later I summarily did quit the place after being singled out and insulted by a British Expatriate – in an Email copy to all the Staff – and the CEO fellow Expatriate siding with him – against a National – and yet in Human Resources too for that matter! – unquote.

What it all confirmed to me was this getting a bashing from my now increasingly being radicalized and fundamentalised our own people – despite facial appearances – and realizing that even in our own country – even people like me who want to live and let live – and moderate in views – are singled out – and ‘guests in our own offices’! But the dirtier and murkier picture was lines being drawn between the locals – and the external Management – and the docile weak own Top Management to allow such things to happen. Nothing that happened after this surprised me anymore!

But whoever is the CEO – whether local or expatriate – believe me – nothing has changed much – if you have been reading my recent articles in this column. That really scares me to the core now – with this indifference, care-free, arrogant, haughty, conceited and proud focuses, attitudes and approaches in the Offices particularly now!

History had repeated itself this time – by some people being very cross with me! These are not our ways for such celebrations – and we thought you would lead by example – or we had higher hopes and expectations from you – but you have let us down badly’! The scarier part is this all coming now from the younger ones – and our future leaders!

The Committee Has Not Met Yet!

 In hindsight and again speaking from my own personal experiences and in retrospect – I wish to reiterate this point – that though we have seen some initiations and improvements in the citizens’ rights and freedom – still nothing has changed much on the grounds and in reality.

 The problems are the same in pushing them forward into action, reality and into practice – rather than them being minutes of meetings – and if even filed for records first of all in the first instance. There is need for real movement into action, propelling, push, dynamism and pragmatism in moving them forward – into practice and into reality. Time is not in our side – in essence and or in favour – before we all get bogged down into being reactive ‘fire fighting’ – and further ‘red tape, bureaucracy and inaction’!

 It is alright to put news of improvements and changes for the better in the media – but what is the use of all of them – if they are still not practiced – or excuses given for delays and procrastinations – as is the usual case? I hope that Readers can remember of what I wrote before of those working within the system – the ‘old guards syndrome’ – to prevent and or delay changes. These peoples need to be exposed – and kicked out – and as lessons to others.

 This is also the real truth still! The citizen cannot still win – or very few isolated cases in success – against the public departments and bodies. This is even if you have a case where if things were really practiced and put in action – the citizen SHOULD win in case of dispute scenario. But he will simply not win. Adversely, the same public body can take you for action – and or sue you in courts for the ‘same case and situation’ – for as many times as they want – and the case will still be heard – and nothing can stop them! Even if you cannot draw blood from a stone! 

You go to the Public Officials that you know to hope for solace and intervention – and they are obligated to do so by their authorities, power, control and auspices dominion – if not that you know them well and hope Wastah will kick in – but does not! Simply no one will ever lift a finger to help you – or they turn away from you as if you do not exist- and even if you try to contact then face to face – let alone by emails and by phone? Even if you want to fight against the Big Cats for your rights or that company of yours that is closing down – you end yet again as The Loser!

 How long these things will go on – before something breaks up – or blows up in front of our faces?  The truth and in actual fact – the things at stake and at issue are in reality not really big unsolvable issues – but involve the usual uncaring, care-free, no-interest, cannot-be-bothered-the least approaches and attitudes. What if really big things were at stake? One shudders -  and does not want even want to start thinking on this! Heads need to roll – before things can really improve – otherwise it is a lost cause – and everyone will end as the loser!

 Even if you have given up and do not want to fight your case – because you know you will lose again as the citizen – and complied by what ‘as has been thought as fair and equitable – does not matter if you think differently – who cares? If you follow up your case – so you can be in the clear – and restore your personal freedom and rights – you get the same excuse – The Committee has still not met yet to discuss and or finalise your situation. You are not the only one – so just wait! This is said to you more in annoyance and in anger – rather than in trying to cool you down – or making you understand about the situation – and in letting you know about the results.

 There are things I said in 1980s that now have really happened in reality and on the grounds too. Yet I was given all the labels – including having chips on his shoulders! – A big mouth – a trouble-maker – needs to be stopped! – and so on!

 My problems are that I care and feel a lot – and want things to work out – and not go bad! Instead, I always end up as the victim of circumstances of my own making for speaking up and making a stand – and the usual at the end loser! Whilst those who do not care or bother get rewarded – and acknowledged – and given more and more – because of their lack of caring and in indifference.

 Twice I have given up writing anymore – only to persuaded to come back in again. Of course, I cannot deny that I need the money – if even after 35 years of dedicated services, loyalty and feelings of caring are simply wasted – because I cannot touch much my own pension for the very same aforementioned reasons.

 I can now understand and appreciate why people turn to Religion in despair and in giving up hope – instead of the few like Mohamed Buazizi of Tunisia in self-immolation. I simply cannot understand and comprehend why people are so mean and dastardly to each other – and not wanting to change – despite all the changes around us now!

 I am really tired now in continuing writing about these same issues – and I am still in the tunnel – and no hopes for to see the light at the end of the tunnel – if ever that will be so!

The Road Safety Book – Novel Type – In Simple English.

NEW BOOK – The Road Safety Book – Novel Type – In simple English.

I am now writing my 6th book on Road Safety Stories.

The Book Plan – To write Short Emotional Stories that have happened to people because of Road Accidents!The book will be a novice first time type ever written in Oman as in a reading novel type format – written in the simplest of English – as it is envisaged that many of the Readers English is a second language (or third) after Arabic – and to make it easy for them to understand and comprehend – taking into account the importance of the subject to the increased number of road accidents and fatalities in Oman.

I wrote this article for Times of Oman in May 1994 titled – Stray Thoughts on Oman Traffic – and reproduced by PDO Al Fahal Magazine June 11 1994 titled – Drive Safely for the Sake of Family and Loved Ones! – See appended below

A Peoples’ Stories – All True Cases.

 

.The story must be about road accidents and had happened in Oman mainly.

  • To write about Road Traffic Accidents in a book format and using simple English language for all to understand and appreciate.
  • To put catching titles per story such as :-
  • Newly wedded died on road accident
  • Mother is still grieving!
  • Grandmother left alone in the house!
  • Utility bill syndrome
  • Full Family lost in the accident!
  • Bad timing to travel after midnight!
  • Wrong Job Relief causes agony!
  • Fast trip ended shortly!
  • No more singing in the rain!
  • Mother – Do Not Cry For Me!
  • You should have been firm with me Mum – now I am gone!
  • To make it interesting and true. And things that we have seen in reality happening in front of our very eyes.
  • To give accident account, possible causes and lessons learnt.
  • As the writer will have the full rights to lay out the story according to the flow of information
  • Ask people who have No Objections to write their own true stories with photos and blogs.
  • Include photos of as many car accidents and lessons to learn! Preferably in colour format.
  • We need to write this book in view of the high road fatalities and accidents – and starting with schools.
  • The idea can be expanded with a picturesque book for Primary Schools (Arabic also) in the future – but it will have to be in corporation with others (Arabic not that god for writing up!)

B How The Idea Originated!

It came some time back from an Omani General Manager (and a very good personal friend!) and whose Executive Secretary and the whole family perished in a road accident two years ago!

I knew the late girl well – see sample story appended.

This idea was given to me also by a good Indian Fan of mine as something worthwhile to consider to do with my Writing Skills and Experiences and taking it up from the Five Books already published by me.

C Issues

There are many issues to handle first – like people willing to talk first with you and their willing for their stories to be told? But with the right approach and tactics this can be approached in the right way for success.

Otherwise we will not use names but create our own names, initial, nome-de-plumes and pseudonyms

D Summary

The book can take off very well. I have a strong feeling on this one!

To be published in Oman as we may ask sponsors also from others like PDO, ROP, Newspapers etc – but the lesser the better! I want to own full rights and in publishing too.

I am looking for financial support and in monetary help and in financial more sponsorship.

Also if you know of any stories as above to share with me and other Readers

Or if people willing to come forward to share their own stories – as lessons for others to learn!

Or any views or suggestions that you may possibly have.

Let us not forget life is not permanent or forever – but we will be remembered for what we have done and contributed in this world SADAKA JARIYAH

Rest in Peace – RAW!

Peace Be Upon Her!

In Remembrance – Feeling Very Sad Today!

Wednesday February 9th 2011.

She had the most beautiful, enchanting and blossoming smile that you ever saw in such a pretty girl like RAW!

Always cheerful and helpful – people flocked in and out of her Office just to visit and talk to her! Always a kind word and gesture to everyone – if it was the last sandwich which she had to keep for herself – she would offer it to you and she would go without!

The old man went up the stairs to the offices as he was afraid of using the lift! He was a very angry man – he had received a wrong electricity bill that went to over a Thousand Omani Rials! His electricity was also disconnected! He had travelled all the way to The Head Office from the Interior – because he did not receive any cheers from the Branch.

He was shouting and addressing me – I had come in temporarily as The HR Consultant! How can my bill be so high? Last time I paid was less than OMR 20 (US Dollars 60)? I live with my wife and my two sons only in the small house!

Hearing the commotions, RAW stepped out from her Office. Abuuiiy! (Father!) Please come and sit down. She brought him water and coffee. Relaxed, the old man started crying! He was ashamed of himself – for shouting so loudly to so many others – and ‘making just a nuisance’ of himself! Do not cry Father she said to him. I will call the GM out of the meeting to see you just now!

Do not worry – she assured him – I will take care of you! And she did…. the old man got his electricity bill cancelled and the electricity returned – and a company car to take him home to his village 250 kilometers away. RAW also gave him Company Complimentary gifts – that is RAW for you – always caring and feeling for others! As a Consultant even for me – this was a great learning experience in kindness, care, feelings and in humanity – all RAW!

Wednesday February 9th 2011.

I was calling this good friend of mine a CEO of a National Company – and he gave me the ‘shock of my life’ to tell me that his Executive Secretary – and a First Class High Profile lady in my books had died as another casualty figure (statistics) just recently – after asking him how she was and having not received any emails from her for quite a while. I had covered this poor lady in My Books as one great person who had always stood by me in offering me support, kind words and in encouragement in my books.

I had never expected to cry again! For me I try best to hold back my tears very much. But failed miserably this time! I still fail whenever I remember her. This poor lady was amongst one of the ‘casualty figures and statistics’ that we read in the newspapers every day and week – without abating an eyelid – as the ‘usual stories’ we read in the newspapers. Or the usual pun – so what else is new?

I also did read this article by one Omani Columnist in the other newspaper titled Killer roundabout’ rings alarm bells in Mahdah – by Fahad Al Mukrashi. Every week we see also in the newspapers about road casualty figures in the newspapers – but as usual in the coming story we never imagine or visualize that it could be someone we know well or related to.

It seemed that an Omani family of 5 adults and 5 children had decided to get into a saloon car and drive all the way to Abu Dhabi in UAE. They decided to have lunch there and then to return on the same day. At 21:30 hrs, the father of the family perhaps overlooked the Mahdah round about and caught by surprise – he panicked and braked sharply – and the car rolled over several times. Six members of the family died immediately but the father escaped with minor injury because he was wearing a seat belt and was awake and alone behind the wheels.

This is one girl that I really liked and admired – and was always a great fan and supporter of me. She was always encouraging and supportive – of me personally – my books and my writings. The happiest time she was when I dedicated some of her comments in my books and giving her complimentary copies.

She was always sending me nice warm supportive messages – like cheering your day or to make you smile messages. These always used to cheer me a lot – especially when I was feeling down and sad. She was always beaming with smiles and kindness. Pretty smiles full of blossom and enlightenment!

Today I am crying again of the sad news and the gap in my life now. She was a great lady and I miss her terribly!

She had a great sense of humour and tease! Once I asked her if she was interested to get married or what – or why not still. With her usual sense of humour and wit she replied – They are waiting for me to get a higher salary first before they proposed to me! My salary is still small to them!

May Allah SWT Rest her angelic kind soul in eternal peace in this world and the eternal – and open the highest heavens for her – Amin.

Inshallah I will always pray for her so long as I will live – Amin.

At My Workplace!

The Scared Managers!

For the last 18 months or so I have been at home with no sort of any Human Resources Management job (temporary and or part time) or project-wise. Being bored stiff and having my car back now after it was hijacked by Madam – who finally hit the ceiling to call in retirement benefits (did you notice how sensitive ladies get when they have to tell people their true age and why they are now at home!) – I decided to visit a few of my peers in their offices! Uninvited and unprepared they were for me in my visits!

There are some places I know that I will be most welcomed in and be well treated – whilst I am not naïve not to know that in some places I will be not welcomed – and if I tried entry I would be asked to leave – and or escorted out if I still resisted! This does not bother me the least – because these are places where my good Indian friends have said – he first gave Aaacha Boloo (AB – plain true straight forward hit back talk to the boss!) before he abruptly quit with short or no notice at all!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So I met these good friends of mine. In some of the places the offices provided for the last day of the week samosas and snacks were still continuing (I missed these and the chats!) – but in others they were no longer there. The excuse was of course ‘budget’ – but I personally think it was more ‘sinister and covered up’ than that! In one of the places my peer friend decided to take me to introduce me to the new Top Guy (TG – Omani also) – and as I sat chatting with him the subject moved over to requirement of filling in the position of one HR position – the incumbent who had interrupted a meeting the TG was giving – and had quitted on the spot after getting AB from him.

So the peer was suggesting to promote the Assistant of the resigned incumbent – but the TG would not hear about it! He just said – if we could not ‘control’ the other guy – how can we be able to control this one – he is worse than him (resigned incumbent)! This scared me to my wits that the desire ‘to control, dominate and manipulate’ was still there – despite all the things that have happened – and in some places still happening! Things in the offices will never change – whether it was locally or expatriate run like in the past!

Why are the Managers so scared that they still want to control their staff? It looks to me like conscripted workers that need to be put in their places like in the military or prison arenas with unruly vagabond rebellious units – and inactive and on the run! Actually the scariest part was not this one but the approaches, attitudes and focuses now of not upsetting the staff – especially the latest entrants younger local staff including the graduates too. The fear is that they do not want to be ‘in the news’ again of slowdowns or work stoppages – so the Management is driving a clear safe distance of dealings and inter relationships – and even if the talks of ‘control management’ aspects are also going on in line and in parallel!

It reminded me of one company that I used to work for in one of the neigbouring countries where they laughed their heads off when being in HR I wanted to see a few of the new entrants in the lists! The mockery and tease was – wait for payday when they come to collect their salaries – we make it a point that at least on pay day they come in to sign in for the cheques – though we could as well transfer their salaries through the bank too if we wanted.

But just to keep minimal contacts – because ‘they are not workers – and we are forced to take them in being nationals’! This plus the interviewee who wanted first to see how his office would look first before sitting down and agreeing to be interviewed by me – though albeit admittedly a local by default too!

Frankly if these things are really going on of not wanting ‘to bother and disturb the staff and let peace reign supreme’ then there are more troubled waters ahead – and MORE dangers than if not action and discipline is not taken for the few offenders and miscreants – localization or not? Why are the Managers now so scared – even the locals too?

We really do need to really self-analyse ourselves and deep consciousness review and research – before we build up lazy bones and uncaring unethical and unprofessional staff for the future!
